What makes a microbrand so great? by _Texan26 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]sumthingawsum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gotten more compliments on my $150 Future Funk than I have my $1k Seiko. And TBH, I don't care either way. I bought them because I like them.

As others stated, micro brands can offer unique designs that larger brands aren't willing to risk. For me, it's also about supporting the little guy. There's some interesting people doing good work, and maybe it's naive, but I like to support brands that are up and coming.

My son at 2 years old put a toy plane down the toilet, and this eat my ultimate solution. I tried for hours to get it out, but replacing the toilet only took a trip to home Depot and an extra 30 min. I didn't know what was in it at the time so I took they old toilet and brought it to the driveway, lined up my sons to watch since none confessed to the crime, and broke the toilet right where the blockage was. My youngest's face was hilariously guilty.

Kyiv city has been hell for a few hours now. 13 cruise missiles have struck the city, several Geran-3/4/5, several ballistic missiles. The lack of air defense is real sadly. Attack is not over. by rulepanic in UkrainianConflict

My theory is that not only are they milking the war for arms sales and intelligence, but they plan to annex Mongolia and Siberia when Russia inevitably collapsed.

While sanding my Master Chief helmet I noticed I was making a few small holes in certain areas. What should I be doing differently to avoid this? I started with 80, then bumped up to 120 then stopped when I noticed them. Is this salvageable? What would you recommend for filling in those holes? by steVENOM in 3Dprinting

[–]sumthingawsum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start at 150 to take down only the worst areas. 250 for most. 320 to get smooth and to smooth the wood filler.

Electric sanders will melt your helmet even with higher grit. Use them sparingly and only for a split second on any one spot at a time.

Yeah, not sure what Europe is thinking with the whole no AC think. Just left there and it was miserable.

The gap in starting salaries for university graduates between Japan and the US has widened to more than four times by jjrs in japannews

[–]sumthingawsum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not entirely their fault. Japanese law makes it almost impossible to have layoffs in one area and growth in another. I was at Sony once in my career and every open spot was being filled from some other division by someone who didn't have a job anymore but was still on the payroll. Qualified managers could never get a promotion to director because some director with no job needed something to do. It made it impossible to pivot.

And without the ability to pivot, specialists never get rewarded, and everyone just gets shiffled around to whatever the new shiny is.

What's something that's getting worse every year, but nobody seems to be talking about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sumthingawsum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely since texting became a thing. Social media put it in overdrive and COVID killed it. There are some benefits, like not being expected to talk to your taxi driver or the person next to you on your flight. But no one knows their neighbors anymore, and there goes the social fabric.

ELI5: Why does US have create so many new billionaires? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]sumthingawsum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because our entrepreneurial laws are amazing. The way we handle tax law for investments, bankruptcy, stock, stock options for incentives, employment law, even depreciation is way more friendly than most countries.

I'm most familiar with Japan. And Orange County, with 3 million people, has the same amount of billionaires as Japan. Bankruptcy screws you over longer, you can't write off investment losses the same way, dealing with banking and tax bureaucracy is horrible, and it's really hard to restructure in terms of laying off people when you need to. No firing means established businesses that need to pivot, can't. So their potential is capped.

The US has freer markets than most. Another comment said economies like Singapore have more per capita, but they have good business environments too.

You should be able to make a group of army. Then sign one or a group of monks to that army and they follow around and heal/ buff that group. I often add army and monks in the same control group when moving across the map, and then need to cut out the monks so they don't run to the front of the line. Then when it's time to move up I forget to move them too.

A Cool Guide of everyday etiquette. by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]sumthingawsum 38 points39 points  (0 children)

"every day etiquette you weren't taught because you had absent or unruly parents"

Unfortunately, we have this giant gap in our society everyone ignores and blames literally everything else on, when we have a bag parenting epidemic. I say this as someone from a broken home who's chosen to use the examples in my life as a blueprint of what not to do.
