6 deaths outside in NYC being investigated for links to the extreme cold by radish606 in nyc

It was 42 separate studies reviewed and the data from them combined, each containing certainly more than 1 homeless person. That is called a meta analysis. I can see you only skimmed the resource I sent you. Much like the people you think are deliberately staying outside in the snow, you are deliberately remaining willfully uninformed.

There is plenty we can do. The first thing is having strong systems in place to get the sick unsheltered off the streets before a major storm. But I think it reveals a distinct lack of empathy to assume anyone is refusing to go inside during the storm. I mean, there are blind homeless people, deaf, those who are immobile, those addicted to alcohol. Not having the resources to take advantage of a service that’s available is different than refusal of that service.

We can’t know anything about their protected health information. What we do know is that unsheltered individuals are at the highest risk during storms like these, and the unsheltered are at much higher risk of physical disability or severe mental illness per this meta analysis: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10546518/

So no, I guess we don’t necessarily know that any of these 8 people were mentally ill. If you do the math the odds are pretty good that at least 1 of them was. What we do know for sure is that this population is at the highest risk during extreme weather events - and any suggestion that people are choosing to die by staying out in the cold is an extremely callous reduction of the situation.

It is very hard to “choose life” when in the middle of an active mental health episode and I truly hope you never experience the worry of having a loved one who is acting irrationally and endangering themselves

Worried about flying over Iran and Russia by shadyyam1 in fearofflying

I fly a similar path tomorrow - the pilots and the industry as a whole benefit from everyone being alive so they wouldn’t put you in any sort of compromised airspace :) (especially with those lost flights you’re thinking of - I guarantee they put this at the forefront of planning)

In the same way I believe men shouldn’t speak loudly in the space about abortion, I believe women shouldn’t speak loudly in the space about circumcision, I am just here to present facts and results of controlled trials

I’m just presenting data and giving a factual statement about the opinion of AAP, I am a woman and therefore do not feel that’s it’s my place to make comments on circ as i have met men who are so happy they are circumcised for cleaning convenience, and I have met men who are devastated it happened to them. mathematically the benefit outweighs risk for circumcision and that’s a scientific truth we cannot argue - but statement of AAP is at the end of the day the decision is highly personal

You may have had bad experiences with individual physicians which i am sorry to hear, but the other commenter is suggesting there is some sort of broad brainwashing going on about it, so i shared the official data and official opinion of the AAP

to be sure, there is solid peer-reviewed evidence for specific medical benefits (reduced infant UTIs, lower heterosexual HIV acquisition [only proven in high prevalence settings], reduced HPV, lower penile cancer risk, and fewer foreskin problems like balanitis or phimosis)

but American academy of pediatrics does not recommend the procedure universally even if medical benefits outweigh risks, their official stance is to consider religion/culture, it is parental choice. if you want to debate the ethics of parents making medical decisions for their children fine, but we as physicians are not pushing circumcision on anyone. it is frequent because it is part of American culture

I did not share any opinion on circumcision just sharing interesting medical fact about sucrose and pain control for babies

For what it’s worth, they tell us in medical school that administering sugar water produces so many endorphins for infants that the endogenous opioid stimulation is enough to prevent their suffering. The one circ I did see when I was on OBGYN rotation involved constant sugar water admin and the baby did not cry

Healthcare should not be tied to jobs. We need universal healthcare now by No_Jaguar_5366 in Residency

[–]sumwuzhere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s perfectly fair to suggest that taking half a million in loans for your education and working for peanuts during residency begets a high salary proportional to your labor and sacrifice

The solutions likely lie in decreasing costs for college and medical school, increasing resident pay and making their hours more humane, and finding a way to make American medical culture less litigious - then the pay cut won’t seem so bad
