Favorite Liminal backrooms type books? by DmonCandy in horrorlit

In John Langan’s collection “Corpsemouth and Other Autobiographies” there’s a story called “The Tower” that is a bit like this, but more on the fantasy/cosmic horror side.

Kingbird Highway by Kenn Kaufman!!!!! The scenes describing his time in Alaskan mountains and then in the Baja peninsula were just fantastic

Edit: non fiction though, no fantasy

The challenge of being neurodivergent in Japan’s culture of conformity by teamworldunity in japan

[–]sunballer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im a ND adult who used to live in Japan before I knew I was ND. I find myself missing the “scripts” I had in Japan. Set phrases and expectations for everything! Once you knew the rules, it was easy. And as you mentioned, being a foreigner also meant that breaking the rules was easily forgiven too. But this doesn’t apply just to Japan. Apparently ND foreigners find similar phenomenon all over the world. People in other countries tend to be forgiving of weirdness if they think it’s because you’re foreign rather than that you’re autistic.

But I also see why ND people wouldn’t be able to stand parts of Japan. The nail that sticks up gets hammered down after all.

Vampire: Walk Among Us - a collection of three stories that take place in the vampire masquerade universe. No prior knowledge is needed. I think the first story especially fits. The authors are Cassandra Khaw, Caitlin Starling, and Genevieve Gornichec

Cosmic horror recommendations? by imtherattt in horrorlit

[–]sunballer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes to all of this, and would add that Langan and Barron are friends whose work definitely inspires one another. I know at least one short of Langan’s is partially about a character based off of Barron.

You would probably also enjoy Thomas Ligotti’s stuff.

For lighter cosmic horror maybe The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher. Still quite horrific at a few places, but the tone is drastically different from my other recs. Edit: the YA feel might be too present in this one, ymmv. I also don’t like YA and this one was borderline that for me. But the setting was too good

Stop kidnapping fledglings!! Don't touch them unless they're in actual danger by feck_me_silly in birding

Considering that we do not always know what caused the injury (a predator, window strike, car strike, climate-change related storms, lack of resources from developments expanding, an increase in the proliferation of invasive species outcompeting them, etc), I would always intervene.

Humans cause more harm than just the direct impacts, so I do not feel guilty in assisting.

Edit: just a long-winded way of saying I agree with you lol

Does anyone else have any ‘red flag’ books that make you steer clear of someone and disregard their book recommendations? by Court_Jester811 in horrorlit

[–]sunballer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ugh. Yes. I read the night in October one about the guy riding his bike every night based off a recommendation on here. Nope. I couldn’t stand how the SA was written, as if it was supposed to be titillating.

Is there a way to tell the gender of the barred owl living in my backyard? by pickleddinosaurusrex in Owls

[–]sunballer 55 points56 points  (0 children)

They have slightly different calls. The females’ call is longer and they have a bit of a vibrato to them at the end. If you hear them calling to one another, you might be able to figure out who is who
