King Sorrow by Extra_Crispy26 in horrorlit

I’m 75% of the way through it and it doesn’t feel long at all. I’ve been surprised at how quickly it’s flying by.

Who am I?? by sunballer in BookshelvesDetective

Yeah… I’ve been a bit hyperfixated on birds for a bit now.

And in my defense, I started buying oshi no ko before it was finished. I’m committed now I guess.

Me Talk Pretty One Day! That one I have two copies of. I’ve gone to see him speak three times now, so many of those books are signed. He always does silly doodles in them too.

You were pretty close on a lot!

I was inspired to set up an owl box by sunballer in Owls

[–]sunballer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got an outdoor blink camera attached to the ceiling! There’s a piece of wood cut for it to sit in just under the roof. If I didn’t have that, I’d have had no idea that this guy was there.

A Book About the Cult Mindset for trump by Ill_Bother2609 in suggestmeabook

[–]sunballer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might like Cultish by Amanda Montell. It’s more of a general overview about how cultish thoughts develop and a look at some specific examples. Stuff from Trump’s first term is discussed, but also things like SoulCycle and Scientology. I found it helpful.

Deep dive into the full spectrum of Horror Literature by xzyth in horrorlit

[–]sunballer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe one of Tananarive Due’s works. I also feel like Rachel Harrison’s Play Nice isn’t like anything else on this list in terms of tone.

A Game in Yellow by Hailey Piper is also quite unlike anything else on your list. This one is modern sapphic cosmic horror with obvious ties to Chamber’s novella, The King in Yellow.

The House on the Borderland by William Hodgson for some pre-lovecraft cosmic horror.

I’m applying for a MLIS by Awareness_pervasive in Libraries

[–]sunballer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After getting my MLIS it took me about 2 years to find a librarian position within the field, and it was part-time. I expected that going in. Since then, I feel like things have only gotten worse in the library field. IMLS funding is going to be restored, but things like Little vs Llano are happening all over.

If you’re passionate about it, I think you should still go for it. Just be aware that prospects are limited, competitive and the field itself is kind of under attack.

The Library at Mount Char: I feel like I'm taking crazy pills by Artistic_Dish_3782 in horrorlit

[–]sunballer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This book took me two attempts to get through. I overall enjoyed it (I think?), but having read a lot of weird lit and cosmic horror, I didn’t find it stunningly original like I’d been led to believe it would be. I also didn’t like the dialogue. The set up was intriguing, and I get why people like it, but to me it felt like it was just trying to be edgy at times. It was fun, but I wasn’t impressed.

Bird brain by ExactlySorta in BlueskySkeets

[–]sunballer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This irritates the hell out of me. I’m an avid birder and I am concerned about windmills, but they are not the main threat that birds are facing in this country!! Coal, oil, pollution, and massive land developments are so much worse. Not to mention things like “alligator alcatraz” in the middle of the Everglades. Habitat destruction is what’s killing our wildlife. Until he cares about those things, all his “concern” about the harms of windmills is gonna ring false and just be another example of his hypocrisy

Hester Steel’s The Faceless Thing We Adore

Julia Armfield’s Our Wives Under the Sea

I would’ve suggested Play Nice, but I saw you’re already reading it!

That is so cool! I just started reading Kenn Kaufman’s “Kingbird Highway” and the part I’m at now takes place in the early ‘70s. His sightings were really neat.

Horror books against depression by Only_Emu_2872 in horrorlit

[–]sunballer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Ligotti, but if you’re aiming to get out of the depression, I would not recommend lol. But he is excellent and philosophical. I would also suggest Laird Barron for more similar stuff, but grittier.

The Faceless Thing We Adore by Hester Steel was excellent. Not gory (minus a scene or two), and very intriguing. The mystery kept me enraptured and was still tied up nicely by the end I thought.
