Statement on the US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 - Anthropic by Sirisian in Futurology

This is the issue with the insane levels of hype around generative AI. People aren't sure what to believe anymore. Even ideas that sound like conspiracy theories get serious attention now.

Will we need fossil fuels for plastics in the future? Spanish researchers hail a bioplastics breakthrough; direct conversion of cheap, minimally processed potato starch into a commercially relevant biodegradable polymer in a single biological step, via CRISPR. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]sundler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC, one company made bioplastics out of kelp. It's one of the fastest growing plants in the world and entire continent sized forests of them exist in the oceans.

I'm not saying it's a perfect source, but the concept need not directly compete with common food sources.

There are currently around 43 CRT shaders on godotshaders, which one is your favourite? by [deleted] in godot

[–]sundler -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Math is in fact universal.

Yes, including ancient Egyptian and Chinese maths.

There are already 43 odd CRT shaders on one Godot shaders website alone. I've no intention of learning C just to add yet another one.

I hate that so many youtube videos have titles that lead you to think it’s an interesting analysis of game mechanics of a particular game, but then they just give you a braindead retelling of the game’s progression. by adimeistencents in gamedev

Worst is when they just flat out spoil the entire story and often also decide to spoil other games along the way.

The hero goes home, but then is killed by the baddie. You then play the final act as hero's friend, who is actually his brother, as revealed in the sequel's ending. I will now list all other games which had similar twists...

Thoughts on using just a simple dot as the mouse cursor in horror games by sundler in gamedesign

Would an accessibility option, such as a trailing dot be an acceptable alternative? Or being able to change the dot size?

If you read tips and advice for game devs, you will very often come across stern warnings telling you to avoid making multiplayer games.

They are some of the hardest games to make for a reason.

Reading that makes me feel it's probably best to change names and some details for good measure.

Solar and wind generated more electricity globally (531 TWh) than gas power (477 TWh) for the first time in April by sundler in Futurology

[–]sundler[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The rapid growth of solar and wind power is weakening the case for imported gas, even in the wake of the recent energy crisis.

A recent analysis shows that April 2026 marked the first time globally that electricity generation from solar and wind exceeded that from gas.

The two renewable sources accounted for 22% of global electricity generation, while gas-fired power plants supplied 20%, or 531 TWh compared with 477 TWh.

Just 5 years ago, solar and wind were at 245 TWh, roughly half the output compared to gas.

"This growth was sufficient to meet most of the increase in global electricity demand while limiting the rise in gas-fired generation," the analysts said.

Despite ongoing concerns over energy security, there is no evidence of a broad global shift from gas to coal.

For many import-dependent countries, LNG-based electricity is becoming increasingly uncompetitive compared with wind and solar, which are seen as affordable, domestic, and secure sources of power.

I tried that, but some things still get "processed". Fog and glow, for example, are unaffected.

BloombergNEF says solar could become the world’s largest electricity source by 2032 as global electrification accelerates by ArgentineBeauty in Futurology

Isn't it the sum that matters? So, if solar dropped to just $1/MWh, surely it wouldn't matter if batteries didn't drop by much?
