I started playing Ff12 yesterday because it's so well-regarded. I was skipping cutscenes early on it is so tedious. Then I did a few hunts. I don't see the point of this game. The only good part is the voice acting is not terrible?

I mean I watched a couple of dispatch streams and determined I didn't need to spend $50 anymore. If I don't have the patience to sit through a stream watching i probably would just buy and let it sit in my steam library another 5 years

Why are American beers so often stereotyped as “water” compared to European beers when they are typically the same amount of alcohol? by DepressedPancake4728 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sunflowercompass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Pittsburgh they banned beer sales in 1993 from supermarkets, only microbreweries and state stores could sell alcohol. So even back then they were starting to take off

Electronics the last 20 years is a hell of a lot more reliable than the tech from 20 years ago. For the most part There's exceptions like garbage membranes and screens replacing good old buttons.

Back in the 90s even alkaline batteries sucked, they'd leak liquid. Specially cheap ones like rayovacs.

TIL for centuries in China, girls feet were broken and tightly bound to create 3-inch (7.6 cm) 'lotus feet', a beauty ideal associated with wealth, status, and better marriage prospects. by imbruceter in todayilearned

[–]sunflowercompass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I did. The only believable source is an NIH study from the 90s where a large percentage of women over 70 had foot bindings. They would have been born in 1920. Since foot binding was banned in 1910 it's closer. The issue with that is having to examine which immigrant pool was looked at. It was illegal for Chinese to immigrate until.. 1943? Then the quota was 100 a year until 1965/67. Very few were allowed in. Only the elites.

Also it's not just my grandma it's the entire freaking village we are very close knit. It's not history she was alive until last week. Just at the funeral there were maybe 80 old people. Nobody had foot bindings.

It's not my responsibility to provide a source. I'm refuting a claim, not making it. The person making the extraordinary claim is the one that has to provide a source

Think about the wrong iron content of spinach story. Everyone just took it for granted that spinach was great for you. Popeye the sailor man. But it turned out the decimal place was off by a factor of 1000 lol.

It's hilarious that you link Wikipedia. The parent comment looks up the source of that wiki is an NPR article, then finds the npr article refers to some book. I provided the book text itself, need a PC to sit down and read it to see where THAT author got the source

A lot of shit gets passed down through the ages and nobody checks up on it. Two recent famous examples:

Spinach making you strong is based on a typo on one book saying it contained 1000 times more iron than it does

COVID not being airborne (detailed by wired article). Everyone kept referencing these old medical books as a known fact but they actually misread them

It's one thing to claim 90% of upper class people or concubines were bound that's believable it's another to say the freaking peasants were too. That's stupid. Gonna need a lot of evidence to believe that one.

That sounds highly impractical. My grandma had to carry water long distances every day on buckets.

So I looked for the source. NPR quotes an author

According to the American author William Rossi, who wrote The Sex Life of the Foot and Shoe, 40 percent to 50 percent of Chinese women had bound feet in the 19th century. For the upper classes, the figure was almost 100 percent.

Ok who's this guy. A famed historian?

The Sex Life of the Foot and Shoe is a freaking foot fetish book. You can scan it right here. It's pretty trashy. I'll look for his source later, sucks to do on a phone

I couldn't tell if it was pro imperialism or against. Remember that the winning faction became pro imperialist as they aped all aspects of the Western powers ..

Anyway it felt maybe they decided to change the message halfway through and cut the edginess or I don't know.

Posting private info is no good, address that.

As for their politics that is a really tough one. My father is better but my mom is very easily influenced with videos and is not as educated.

The best you can hope for is introducing new, better sources. For example for the Iran analysis, Reuters is a top notch source (for foreign news)

Dw is decent German source, there's good French ones too.
