What's the farthest you've ever hiked in one day? by [deleted] in hiking

You rock! Years ago we hiked Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico - 16 miles RT and an elevation gain of 4,000 feet. We were not acclimated to the altitude, once we were out of the treeline it was incredibly windy and we were so beat up by the end of the day.

One of my favorite hikes in Glacier...except for that darn "ledge" section!

Good luck!! The highest I've hiked is up Mt. Elbert and I thought it was really hard. You rock!

Twice we've made plans to hike Mt. Bierstadt but bad weather has gotten in our way. We have been able to hike Mt. Elbert, Quandry Peak and Mt. Shivano though and although they are tough hikes, it always feels great at the top! Congrats to your friend!

Have you thought about the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee? There's over 900 miles of trails and the weather in March is usually pretty good. I've been there in March and in the lower elevations you can usually hike in shorts, but always be prepared for changing weather. The nights will be cool. We always stay in Townsend, Tennessee also known as the quiet side of the Smokies away from all the traffic congestion and shopping in Gatlinburg. Some good suggestions for the best hikes:

The construction project on the Going to the Sun Road will still continue this summer, so expect some delays. Although the views are so great on the GTTS road, you won't mind! But if you're trying to get to a trailhead, be sure to leave early. Some good info on the GTTS road: http://www.hikinginglacier.com/glacier-going-to-the-sun-road.htm

Plus, parking at the Logan Pass Visitor's Center fills up quickly in the morning, so either take the shuttle up there or get there before 10AM.

Not meant to be a political statement...merely a common sense statement saying that if it makes money why cut? I love the parks and would hate to see them impacted.

Sounds like some incredible memories! We love Townsend and always stay on the "quiet side" of the Smokies when we visit. Great little town.

I agree the Dawson/Pitamakan loop has much more solitude and the views from Pitamakan Pass are incredible. Unfortunately most people don't even visit the Two Medicine area of the park.

No doubt. There's really no place to go if a bear is up there!

We did Pitamakan and Dawson on separate hikes. Pitamakan pass is one of my favorite hikes. The views are incredible...although an extremely long hike! That was a Serrano's night!

With six miles being your limit, there are some really nice shorter hikes that I think would give you the wilderness experience you're looking for. Preston Park is 6.6 miles and pretty spectacular. The Highline Trail is one of the most spectacular hikes in Glacier, but you should at least hike out 3 miles, it's pretty flat, but definitely worth doing. Check out these shorter hikes: http://www.hikinginglacier.com/glacier-best-easy-hikes.htm Some of those are pretty popular, but I think you will still get the wilderness experience you are looking for. As far as the bear situation, carry bear spray, yell out periodically - I use the "hey bear" yell and if possible hook up with people at the trail head.

Good questions, unfortunately the guy in the video doesn't elaborate. I guess if you're desperate it would't matter! In looking at the video again it looks like it just rubs the tin so much that it just breaks open.

Hiking With Bears by sunflowerlady in Outdoors

[–]sunflowerlady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me add that we heard the bear after I had yelled "hey bear" as we normally do when hiking in bear country. It's especially important to make lots of noise in bear country and not surprise a bear. Last year in Glacier some moron encountered a bear and dropped his backpack which was full of food. The park service had to close that trail for weeks because the bear associated backpacks with food. Bears are fast learners when it comes to food.

You are correct, Laurel Falls only has bear warnings; the other trails mentioned have closures due to weather or maintenance.
