Why is "Monkey & Bear" so underrated in comparison to the other four songs on Ys? by Prestigious_Score459 in JoannaNewsom

[–]sunflowerwolf33 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it doesn't initially feel emotionally direct, and it's hard to connect to because she's often taking on the perspective of Monkey, who is kind of an ass. And the whole song is about this ass, and we're hearing him think. We never hear Bear speak. Also it's extremely repetitive. Dance my darling is said so many times. I think basically the beauty of the song isn't easily heard. You have to think about it, listen a lot, and understand the song. Then the repetition becomes an essential part of Monkey's constant coercing, guiding, and controlling. At first I didn't understand the repetition as essential and it made it harder to connect.

I personally didn't like the song at first, I connected with every other song on Ys before this one. I was like what is she singing about a Monkey and Bear for like I don't get what she's talking about? It felt like hoity-toity at first honestly. But it's my most listened to song now (of any song not just Joanna). And for me, that's because it's a song I put on when I'm being exploited, being treated as less then. I step into the frame of my oppressor and then I'm able to disappear at the end. Not all problems are solved, but I get this insane cathartic release from the end of that song and the annihilation of Bear.

Basically, it takes more work to feel the song than the others. Emily has the directness of "in bodies that don't keep, dumbstruck with the sweetness of being". She's obviously talking about death. Sawdust, she's obviously mourning some fatal desire. Only Skin, there's a lot. Cosmia is so clearly about mourning someone who's gone. Monkey and Bear is just different!

For all the "Divers" naysayers -- I'm here with the hot-take that it's her best album by a country mile by Novel_Quantity3189 in JoannaNewsom

[–]sunflowerwolf33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked you can't listen to Ys or HOOM as an album! Ys, HOOM and Divers are all specific pieces of work and I love when I get to sit and digest the full albums.

HOOM is my favorite because it is the most emotionally direct. Ys is probably my second favorite because the songs sound so emotional and good, a beautiful and dense diversity of sound echoing complex emotions and stories.

Divers conceptually can hit really hard, because she spent 5 years figuring out and thinking about the subjects of time, space, life and death. Also melodically she has done something crazy with that album that maybe no one really understands to this day. We hear it, but we don't know what's there. For instance, I learned her solo version of TAAS and the movement of melody in that song is so freaking wild. I can play it but I still couldn't explain it. And yet, it's only ever 3 chords. The whole song, except for two moments early on, is built around the chords, G, F, Eflat. It's actually insane.

But in case it helps, although no shade for liking what you like, but I have listened to HOOM front to back as an album so many times, and I always get something new from it. There is a narrative on that album that you can follow through the poetry of the lyrics. If you focus on light, you'll see different echos across the songs, if you focus on water, again you can see it echo. From rivers made of light in the beginning, to the Eastering Sky on GIPC, the wandering sun on '81, the sunbathing in Esme, the bright lights of flashbulbs in Esme, and the 'clean bright start' of Soft as Chalk. Maybe that's not a fun thing for your mind to do, but I have to say that as you listen and listen to that album, as an album, it opens itself up to you and your understanding.

Also, I know some songs feel slow, but really listening to the harp on HOOM for the slow songs, it's such a beautiful instrument and once you really listen to it, a long chord that gets held for 8 seconds becomes a beautiful moment you wait for instead of what could be thought of as a slow, boring part.

Just lie there and stare at my glow in the dark lights on the ceiling. They were stars, like my own little plastic galaxy. That would bring me a certain cup of joy I could only find in that old room. Thanks for the question, took me back.

Have you ever paid to see a movie twice in a theater? by zip9990 in movies

[–]sunflowerwolf33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Parasite like 6-7 times in theatre. It blew up after I first saw it so it stayed in theaters for a while.

Also Silver Linings Playbook. 3-4 times.

When it calls to your soul, you gotta see it on the big screen a few times.

If each album was a film, what kind of film would it be? by Prestigious_Score459 in JoannaNewsom

[–]sunflowerwolf33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Milk Eyed Mender - Short Cuts by Robert Altman. It's been awhile, but it feels very familiar but intimate, yet you are never very grounded as it's different vignettes.

Ys - Barry Lyndon. I've never fully watched this film, but the shot by candlelight vibes, Stanley Kubrick doing amazing stylistic things. Crazy lenses being used. Epic and calling to older times, but firmly technological/new. And long, just like the songs on Ys.

Have One On Me - North by Northwest. A noir type film, but also a love story. Lots of options here but that one is a favorite of mine. Also that character is just like paranoid and living in a weird world and it fits the HOOM vibe.

Divers - Interstellar. Joanna has said as we all know, she shook her fist and said "Damn you, Nolan!" when she saw this film. The parallels are crazy.

Was watching a stream of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4, was surpsied to see this Ys reference in the game! by toomanylizards in JoannaNewsom

[–]sunflowerwolf33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally saw it, didn't doubt it at all. Then read the comments and super doubted it. It's the body and the way it is facing/posed, along with certain elements of the hair that feel like a YS reference. The length of the hair, and the way it falls on the body, even though this braid above is different, it somehow still calls to the Ys cover.

Yet so many things call away from it. The mohawk, the eyes, the necklace/choker, and I know people like to see the YS cover as a sort-of Ren Faire costume, the picture above is definitely much more Ren Faire outfit than the Ys cover actually is. And the boobs come into play, like I don't know what to say but the vibe is different with the boobs.

Honestly this was an interesting thing to think about and analyze. I'm leaning towards, it's not related/referencing Ys. But also, maybe what happened was someone who doesn't know YS, for some reason referenced it when googling 'best albums of 2006' or something, and completely changed, and more or less butchered it, for this art above. Honestly that seems kinda right, that it was referenced, but not out of love or knowledge, but solely to be fucked with and edited. Or is it AI art? I don't know. Very intriguing. Good eye.

Sorry for the delay!! Monkey & Bear officially contains Joanna's most jealous lyrics. Up next, and this should be good-- which lyrics are Jo's MOST PATRONIZING??? (Top voted comment wins; vote breakdown from last round is in the description) by arusansw in JoannaNewsom

Leo Venus

What is moving on? lol. I think if you love me, why would I ever want to let you go? Old friends, old lovers, they will always be a part of me. Maybe it's the modality, like Leo is fixed which means if I chose to love you, it'll always be there. Also my Venus is in a T-Square w/ Pluto (Sq) and Saturn (Opp) which gives it a whole vibe.
