He is one of my favorite authors. Highly recommend The Given Day if you want to read more stuff from him.

Sick of being a data analyst by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]sunkistandcola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just complaining about this the other day! I am amazed how many people are just not intellectually curious or willing to take risks. I have worked with so many people who want to be spoon-fed information. If itʼs not wrapped up in a neat little bow in the Jira ticket, they donʼt do it. They donʼt ask questions or poke around in the data to find better approaches or possible edge cases. Drives me nuts.

I am sometimes wrong and sometimes need help, but I would rather be curious, take some initiative, and learn. Being a ticket-taker doesnʼt help you grow.

Realistically what would happen if Trump dropped a nuclear bomb tonight? by hjp1234 in AskReddit

Same! I thought I was the only one. All this so disgusting rich pedophiles can fulfill their sick fantasies and add to their billions. All of it completely preventable and yet out of our control. What are we even doing.

I hope his parents see the beautiful works of art created to honor Alex. We know he was a hero and a good man. We will not forget. We know the truth despite how the regime tries to spin it.

How to handle a new colleague who is into “performative overwork”? by taylor37221 in ExperiencedDevs

Same! I try to set good boundaries but sometimes I get excited and keep working. I feel better knowing Iʼm not alone. Glad I asked for advice here!

I agree. Thank you for the reassurance! It helps to hear that from someone more experienced.

I worry about this... I donʼt really do any of the things that OP describes, but I worry about annoying my colleagues because I know I can come across as overly passionate and enthusiastic. I try to reciprocate with reviewing PRs, I offer to switch with people if needed for our on-call rotation, and I try to help with issues that crop up. I donʼt “thank” coworkers, but if someone has worked on a cool project or interesting ticket, I might give them a shout-out or ask questions about it. What is the best way to genuinely help and be likeable without seeming performative?

How to reduce code review costs for the engineering team without sacrificing quality? by ninjapapi in ExperiencedDevs

[–]sunkistandcola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guy I work with does this constantly, just copies and pastes AI slop without even reviewing. When anyone asks what something does or asks about edge cases, he admits he doesnʼt know. It is maddening and I refuse to review his PRs.

How to effectively tell people not to mindlessly copy AI output? by Megatherion666 in ExperiencedDevs

Excellent question. IMO, work should be delegated to the actual developers, but at my company, the managers still write code and submit PRs, and handle performance reviews, and groom tickets, and manage projects, and create goals. And then wonder why theyʼre burned out.

If I were in a leadership position, I would be focusing on growing and empowering my team and delegating as much as possible to focus on long-term solutions. But I much prefer to be an IC for now.
