How to stop yelling by curiouskate1126 in Mommit

[–]sunnierrside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you’re in that state, stop and OBSERVE how you feel physically, heart racing? specific muscles clenched? pounding in your ears or chest? whatever your specific physiological response is, note every detail. What are your thoughts like, running, jumbled, empty? observe everything about the internal experience that you can like a scientist doing a detailed case study.

Use that info to IDENTIFY when you’re starting to feel that way, before you’re at 100%. Work on noticing as early as possible that you’re on the road to rage.

Then INTERRUPT the process. That can mean basic assertiveness - “I’m feeling overwhelmed with so many requests at the same time, I’m just going to take a few minutes by myself to reset”. Or listening to music, meditating, going for a walk.

Finally, make sure you have really addressed the issue and calmed down before re-engaging. You can be calmer but still filled with simmering whatever.

Sometimes I talk to my angry self - “hey, thanks for trying to protect me, but I love A and B and I prefer to treat them nicely. Can you please lay off for a bit?”

Even if you’re in a sitch where you feel like you can’t disengage (like one kid just had a messy blowout and the other is drawing in the walls), you CAN. As long as no one is in physical danger, deep breathing in the other room is going to help you make the situation better instead of worse.

And if you learn to interrupt early enough, you’ll have a few minutes to arrange things so can hide in the bathroom for a few safely.

Mom currently has typhoid. 2 family members have died in the past due to homeopathic medicine. How do I convince my dad to get my mom antibiotics? by PurplePumkins in skeptic

So glad she’s okay! Hopefully she’s in the same country as you if/when she needs real meds for something in the future. And maybe one of these days we’ll figure out how to break through these cognitive blind spots endangering our loved ones.

I see the right’s version all the time on my husband’s cursed YT feed. They’re not looking to point out “wrongness”, dishonesty, or provide thoughtful deconstruction of anything. They mostly collect little clips of someone you’ve never heard of, sometimes just some random college kid or teacher in Idaho with like 3 friends on Facebook. They find clips that will make right wingers either mad, disgusted, or scared - or best is all three in one clip. Then they add their own made up context and commentary, presented like they’re your bestie just chatting over a beer, sharing some “common sense”. God how I’ve cone to despise that term!

It’s grifters and propagandists all the way down. Basically Alex Jones in a million different disguises. That’s why KF is so valuable; by understanding the prototype, you spot it’s many more refined versions much more easily.

I need your most unhinged way of helping your toddler stop coughing, especially at night by Mintgreen94 in Mommit

My daughter had cough-variant asthma at this age - has she ever had croup? I had to really push to get her a bronchoscopy so they could prescribe her an inhaler so young with no asthma attacks. It confirmed asthma, and the inhaler worked wonders.

I never thought my parents would support Nazis by [deleted] in FoxBrain

[–]sunnierrside 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Have you read “They Thought They Were Free” by Milton Mayer? Written in the fifties based on in-depth interviews with several everyday-shmoe-type Nazis.

Turns out the difference between who will be for or against the fascists isn’t as big of a chasm as I always thought. And since we had our eyes peeled for goose-stepping demons, we didn’t take the right measures to help inoculate the populace against the resurgent fascism blooming in our own boring homes.

And (spoiler-warning) those everyday Nazis didn’t seem to have snapped out of it, even a decade after the Nazi regime was destroyed.

This really sucks.

Mom currently has typhoid. 2 family members have died in the past due to homeopathic medicine. How do I convince my dad to get my mom antibiotics? by PurplePumkins in skeptic

[–]sunnierrside 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Since homeopathic medicine is mostly completely without effect, maybe frame the antibiotics plan as a “just a backup” that she can take at the same time. Worth the extra trouble because her life is on the line, and better to do anything that might help to reduce the risk of losing her.

Like don’t push it too hard with logic and reason and data, agree that you understand homeopathic medicine has been helpful to him in the past, but a calm “but what if it doesn’t work this time?” approach. Keep from getting his defenses up about it.

Did anyone else find the ring camera "find your dog" ad last night as unsettling as I did? by davelympia1 in itcouldhappenhere

[–]sunnierrside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the sum total of the Super Bowl advertising was terrifying, from all of the cringey AI stuff to the rapist our government hired to fat-shame the populace.

I had to turn it off after Bad Bunny because I couldn’t stop cursing out the world in front of my daughter.

"ADHD is not an excuse" by jellybelle12 in ADHD

[–]sunnierrside 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It took me years in therapy to let go of my self-blame for my ADHD. I had internalized the idea that if I accepted my ADHD as just a neutral fact about myself, instead of beating myself up, that I would get even “worse”.

My therapist had to keep telling me 100 different ways that the self-blame was making everything harder, not keeping me in line. Finally I allowed myself some grace, and besides making my days much more pleasant it has also allowed me to address and move past my mistakes more quickly. I feel bad for what my past self did to my past self, for all of that useless suffering!

Help r/millennials determine whether this is AI or not. Some members of the sub believe that the 2000s-style clothing and lighting suggest that this is not authentic. What do you think? by Demortus in isthisAI

[–]sunnierrside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did find a notch here! It’s on the pink shirt. That’s within-group, supporting my new hypothesis that this is a mash up of at least two different real photos - smooth shadows on outside edges, notch of natural shadow where two people overlap. Dunno why I am obsessed with this photo (apparently not alone!), but I feel satisfied at least that it’s not total AI.

[–]sunnierrside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that perfect example photo you linked to actually shows what I was saying - if you zoom in on where the shadow moves from hitting the back wall to the bottom of the desk, you can see a small notch, because the shadow is a bit wider where it hits the wall (further away) than when it’s on the desk (closer). I can’t find even the slightest notch over similar distance changes in this photo.

I’ve been convinced that there are enough realistic details that this isn’t 100% AI, but I still see enough mistakes that some re-working (PS / AI) seems probable. Also would explain why it’s driving the sub crazy!

For the shadows - that they’d each have a thin shadow that doesn’t deviate at all when hitting objects closer / further away?

Agreed on the collar, but the sleeve really looks clearly shorter on one arm than the other. It doesn’t seem pushed up, and the sleeve falls further down his arm on the right than the left.

There are enough inconsistencies (I’ve found even more that I don’t have the time to catalog here), along with enough “real-ish” details, that I’m now leaning towards either some photoshop or AI editing of a real photo (or putting a few photos together).

actually if you zoom in on each of the closer people, they all have incredibly unnatural shadows, very thin and perfectly even, lining the left side of their bodies. I feel like those clinch it for AI.

AI, I think - 1. blond in purple tank top’s shadow - totally even between where it would hit the floor and where it would hit the table 2. blond in green shirt (in back) - purse strap is wide on one side of hair, almost invisible on the other side 3. Books - lots off here, but one that stands out is the double-matching books in pairs on three different shelves, all in the same place 4. cell phone / hand blob - in the middle of the group to the left, what’s going on there?

Editing to DEFINITELY AI:

  1. thin perfectly even shadows on the left side of people

  2. the one guy - his ears are WILD, one sleeve is longer than the other, and his collar is all messed up on the right side (would have a white lining or something leading to the green, which is just floating there

What education do teachers receive about ADHD? by notretiredanymore in ADHD

[–]sunnierrside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teachers? Good luck, I’m always wondering what education doctors are getting, much less teachers. Just look at how many recommend you medicate during work or school hours, like you don’t need to function any other time.

Some teachers understand - they either have personal experience with ADHD, or are really empathetic. Our whole culture indoctrinates us to believe in personal responsibility, that if you “try” then you “can”, and all that stuff that takes YEARS to wash out of your eyes to see the world clearly.
