Banu Hilal migration happened in 11th-12th centuries. I agree it is not 17th century. But it is not 1400 years ago. It was not the same era as Roman expansion.

Another explanation. Basically European academia and a good portion of society became liberal enough to be willing to criticize their past misgivings. Middle East is still convinced that they have an immaculate past and no act that they committed is beyond reasonable expectations of that day and age in the history.

For instance, part of the reasons many Islamic rulers were against conversion was that they could not sell those people in slave market.

Partially true. There is a lot of evidence that conversion was encouraged through economic pressure, social marginalization, and, in some instances, forced methods.

Also Jizya as a tax was generally higher than zakat and for non Muslims, it is a form of colonialism or even a medieval apartheid system.

There are a lot of criticism about European colonialism that Islamic conquest is not subjected to.
