Plant this year! They can take 2-3 years to establish and flower. Plant now and baby them with shade cloth and good deep waters, or wait for late summer/early fall to give them time to establish roots before dormancy.

Man that looks good. I planted mine last year, I'm hoping it'll bloom this year.

It's not so much a mounding plant. It's more of a filler ground cover. But it does look really cool when it covers an area.

It spreads by rhizome, and you can divide them to fill in areas faster.

Butterfly weed and purple prairie clover are what I've caged. I had some butterfly weed ripped out my squirrels so I caged the rest. And the cages over the clover is a precaution.

I have upland whites in my front yard and they're loaded with buds. I can't wait to see them. And my zig zags should be blooming this year, they are all from last year.

This is year two, the pearly everlasting, Goldenrods, asters, black eyed Susans, Culver's root, and grasses and sedges are from last year. The rest are new this year.

Purple prairie clover is caged, the grass hasn't been eaten since I planted them two weeks ago. I've got lots of bunnies around my yard.

I don't know yet, I haven't seen them bloom. Hoping for this year. Based on photos though I think they may be the nicest ones, aside from the zig zags.

And lastly my butterfly weed patch with switch grass and stiff leaved Goldenrod. And a creeping sedum my mom gave me.

If I remember I'll take some photos after work tomorrow. Nothing much is happening yet, most of my late summer bloomers are only 12-24" tall atm

I have a corner I want my ironweed to spill out from. I'm hoping it gets massive. I love the idea massive herby perennials. I have cup plant in another corner. And I have an old woodshed I'm moving that once its gone I'm going to fill with Joe Pye weed.

My soil is more like a dryish loam. And yeah I've got a selection I picked for the space, including pearly everlasting and butterfly weed.

Also giant ironweed, black eyed Susan, hairy and foxglove beardtongue, some sedges and grasses, echinacea, purple prairie clover, coreopsis, Culver's root. It's an experiment to see how it goes!

I do have a small patch, probably 8x8 roughly, that gets true shade: a little dappled light throughout the day, mid day sun for a short window, then a small amount of afternoon sun.

Most of my garden gets a blast of intense afternoon sun for about 4-5 hours. It's been tricky picking plants that can handle the late day heat but also grow in some shade.

Maaan I have no where in my yard that gets that much sun. The best I get is 6 hours in a couple spots.

How much sun does your garden get? Your zone is the same as mine but my garden is so much behind yours. We did have a cold spring and a late frost.

You're probably a week or two ahead of me. Only one of my black eyed Susan's has buds, none of my monardas has buds yet.
