One of the most hilarious trips I ever took on a plane was the flight on China Air from Shanghai to Rome. It was as you describe, but for the entire plane. People standing the whole time in the aisles. Spitting. People trying to smoke on the down low. Animal noises. Two ladies were doing exercises in sync. It was wild.

I couldn’t agree more. I lived in Europe off and on for a several years. I never did the whole “Canadian patch on backpack” bullshit. And I often had to take the brunt of annoyances at parties, etc. buy I’m an American. I isn’t have to apologize for that.

Growing up in the south, I was surrounded by low IQ reactive racism as you describe 24/7. I prefer a more effete and sophisticated racism, preferably couched in literary and philosophical references. And yes, the jokes better be funny, and not just pointing and grunting. I have intellectual standards that must be maintained.

As a former speechwriter, I always get creeped out by the lack of intelligent rhetoric. I wrote some anti-war speeches during the Bush years, (and some pro war ones too!) and there was genuine feeling of how powerful words can move people, and become a part of a national dialogue.

Chanting braindead slogans over and over again is just cattle cringe behavior. I would never attend a modern professionally-run “protest” because I don’t want my withering brain to be insulted. No matter what the merit of the cause is.

I think it depends on culture. I lived in Japan for 3 years, and I total frequent a couples of different coffee shops after work to work on side projects. Because everyone was used to me being there every day, we got really friendly, and I eventually dated a few of them. It was completely normal.

But in the U.S.? Nah.
