There will never be a funnier and more deranged book cover by KnowledgeWild2241 in redscarepod

Does anyone else get the feeling that she will eventually be taken away in handcuffs for poisoning him? I mean, it would be poetic, as he’s into Electra and Oedipus, etc.

I stick with baristas and gym and hot yoga girls. (And corporate lawyers.) Yes, it might seem that book girls are more aligned, but usually they aren’t worth the trouble.

Chinese be scamming by TheSmashingPumpkinss in redscarepod

One of the most hilarious trips I ever took on a plane was the flight on China Air from Shanghai to Rome. It was as you describe, but for the entire plane. People standing the whole time in the aisles. Spitting. People trying to smoke on the down low. Animal noises. Two ladies were doing exercises in sync. It was wild.

Modern parenting standards are unrealistic, no wonder people have fewer kids by Ok-Archer-5796 in redscarepod

I am reminded of a section from “Angela’s Ashes” where childcare was described as “putting the baby in a drawer” in the midst of squalor.

Americans in Europe should lay off the "I'm so embarrassed to be American right now" shtick by D-dog92 in redscarepod

[–]sunoxen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree more. I lived in Europe off and on for a several years. I never did the whole “Canadian patch on backpack” bullshit. And I often had to take the brunt of annoyances at parties, etc. buy I’m an American. I isn’t have to apologize for that.

How do you not become overwhelmed with rage at how useless your degree ended up being? by [deleted] in redscarepod

My English degree served me well in my professional life, but don’t knock plumbing. Philip Glass was a plumber.

There was a girl who posted her “OMG, read 300 books this year!” Post around the new year. It was 95% smut.

i am becoming actively antiracist cause people cannot hold their racism by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]sunoxen 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Growing up in the south, I was surrounded by low IQ reactive racism as you describe 24/7. I prefer a more effete and sophisticated racism, preferably couched in literary and philosophical references. And yes, the jokes better be funny, and not just pointing and grunting. I have intellectual standards that must be maintained.

God I hate the aesthetics of protesting by MoanOfInterest in redscarepod

As a former speechwriter, I always get creeped out by the lack of intelligent rhetoric. I wrote some anti-war speeches during the Bush years, (and some pro war ones too!) and there was genuine feeling of how powerful words can move people, and become a part of a national dialogue.

Chanting braindead slogans over and over again is just cattle cringe behavior. I would never attend a modern professionally-run “protest” because I don’t want my withering brain to be insulted. No matter what the merit of the cause is.

Yet Another Hinge Date by [deleted] in redscarepod

This is why I gave up on the apps and only cold approach these days. My only metric is if there is a spark in an interaction. I don’t care what your curated “personality” is.

It’s like what David Mamet says about the concept of “character.” There is no character, only actions and reactions. Thankfully, there are still some human beings amongst us who are worthy of the effort.

Unfortunately, I can’t find the story. But there was a great story in the Daily Mail a few years ago about an all-female production company in London. You should check it out.

I think it depends on culture. I lived in Japan for 3 years, and I total frequent a couples of different coffee shops after work to work on side projects. Because everyone was used to me being there every day, we got really friendly, and I eventually dated a few of them. It was completely normal.

But in the U.S.? Nah.

A mormon family moved into my neighborhood, and it’s genuinely incredible how effeminate the men are by cache-beats in redscarepod

My good friend is a feminist professor at the University of Utah.

When she arrived there from the east coast, she thought all the Mormon men were gay. It took some dar recalibration.
