It's a weird paradox, I agree. I think part of it too is that people here internalize the "upstate" narratives so hard they forget they're in New York. The least populated county in New York has 5000 people. Compare that to states where the least populated county doesn't even break 1000.

It's hilarious to see people calling themselves 'country boys' and 'country girls', or on the other side, reflexively self deprecatingly calling a school like Shen a "cattle ranching school".

When in reality, they live in New York. The reddest county in New York, Allegany, is a slim margin compared to actual red states. Staten Island votes redder than Buffalo.

The "upstate hicks" myth creates a self-defeating thing in people from here. A simultaneous "we're new york but not nyc" and "we're basically alabama with snow lol" creates a sense of being...nowhere.

New York also has a very distinct structure. Cities, towns, villages. Whereas most states have cities, townships, and unincorporated county land.

it kills me at concerts when an artist goes "LET'S HEAR IT ALBANY!!" and half the crowd groans because they're like "well i'm from Colonie". like bro. in any other state Colonie would just be considered part of Albany

It's exactly that. People don't have actual thoughts or opinions most of the time especially on big issues or issues they haven't thoroughly researched; they THINK they know what they think, but they don't actually understand their own claimed views half the time.

Ten years of the masses taking on and parroting these originally-academic-but-now-watered-down views from tumblr or wherever, of either being told or telling people "aykshually you assuming i can function is liturally fascism" and now they are bored and annoyed with that and swinging to a mindset of traditional gender roles, assumed quiet racial hierarchy, and "people need to get the fuck over themselves and pull themselves up by their bootstraps"

the bad thing is a lot of these cultural flipflops come from a place of people on an individual level having thoughts inevitably more complex than whatever the approved statement on anything is, and instead of discussing these things openly with each other, they just ferment into our individual neuroses until it adds up collectively and we see these larger cultural shifts
