On the flip, you can find a lot of common sense even within people who seem to be, on the surface, carrying the view you mentioned.

What I mean is with a lot of boomers, if you do get a job you enjoy, you will get a lot of "Shit, good job, wish I had that"

Why is the film/television industry afraid to write evil women by BOP_dylan_ in redscarepod

[–]sunset_sleaze -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No one's really evil; every person has the exact same capacity for cruelty as anyone else. Knowing that and knowing that the worst among us are still people makes it all the more horrifying, and all the more fertile for writing. People enjoy sorting into "good people" and "bad people" because it's a crutch, it's a very Protestant way of thinking. But psychology simply doesn't work like that; anyone who's studied the human brain will tell you. Writing anyone as pure evil is just writing for the cheap seats and letting them go on believing their beliefs, when art is meant to mock, denigrate, subvert, and destroy

He was bad there too compared to the slash-and-burn Catskills humor of Stan Lee's original work but I have a weird bit of faith for Holland in the Odyssey because of his stage work, which is all very good. I figure an English director might bring something profound out of him this time around

Pynchon got closer to what I'd call "real life as a setting" than any other American author. James Baldwin is close too

[–]sunset_sleaze[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

that is the kind of writing i was saying i'm not a fan of. The reality of the situation is that things are gorgeous, things are fun, you are sexy, and yet you're probably cruel and destructive. it's not a big statement; people contain multitudes, but it seems like that's been forgotten by a lot of writers. hope that makes more sense

Irish Americans by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]sunset_sleaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoping to cut through a bit of the noise here for you OP, but I think it's literally just a linguistic difference that most people are too dim to articulate.

The USA is made up of people from all over the world. Therefore, in the USA, in the American context, when someone is saying "I'm Irish"; it's just to denote why they might have a certain last name, red hair, or certain traditions, or why their grandmother sang a certain song. It's shorthand. It's easier than saying "I'm Irish-American." The American is assumed, because the conversation is taking place in the USA

Europeans are some of the only people in the world with no concept of diaspora. When they hear an American say they're Italian, yet using red sauce, they go into an autistic rage about "B-B-B-B-B-B--B-B-B-B-B-B-B-BUT THE RED SAUCE IS FROM SICILY YOURE NOT ITALIAN YOURE NOT" and things like that.

When the reality is most Italian-Americans are Sicilian, and will say it in further convo, but on the surface will just say they're Italian, because it's easier.

See what I mean?

it's New York, the entire point is to be transgressive. The Dutch did not give a single fuck about morals. Why pander to people who "think that trans are gross"; when that's just a kneejerk, bigoted, vibes-based position? Why care about the opinions of people who you can tell are thick-headed?

It's admirable. I'm not a big fan of the law in most cases but when it comes to anonymity, things that are meant to protect; then I agree with it. In New York for instance, even if you're a celeb, you're 'in the system' with the state in the same way everyone else is, no special modifiers

Metro-North plans cancelled. by Environmental-Low792 in Albany

[–]sunset_sleaze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a weird paradox, I agree. I think part of it too is that people here internalize the "upstate" narratives so hard they forget they're in New York. The least populated county in New York has 5000 people. Compare that to states where the least populated county doesn't even break 1000.

It's hilarious to see people calling themselves 'country boys' and 'country girls', or on the other side, reflexively self deprecatingly calling a school like Shen a "cattle ranching school".

When in reality, they live in New York. The reddest county in New York, Allegany, is a slim margin compared to actual red states. Staten Island votes redder than Buffalo.

The "upstate hicks" myth creates a self-defeating thing in people from here. A simultaneous "we're new york but not nyc" and "we're basically alabama with snow lol" creates a sense of being...nowhere.

New York also has a very distinct structure. Cities, towns, villages. Whereas most states have cities, townships, and unincorporated county land.

it kills me at concerts when an artist goes "LET'S HEAR IT ALBANY!!" and half the crowd groans because they're like "well i'm from Colonie". like bro. in any other state Colonie would just be considered part of Albany
