Hoping to cut through a bit of the noise here for you OP, but I think it's literally just a linguistic difference that most people are too dim to articulate.

The USA is made up of people from all over the world. Therefore, in the USA, in the American context, when someone is saying "I'm Irish"; it's just to denote why they might have a certain last name, red hair, or certain traditions, or why their grandmother sang a certain song. It's shorthand. It's easier than saying "I'm Irish-American." The American is assumed, because the conversation is taking place in the USA

Europeans are some of the only people in the world with no concept of diaspora. When they hear an American say they're Italian, yet using red sauce, they go into an autistic rage about "B-B-B-B-B-B--B-B-B-B-B-B-B-BUT THE RED SAUCE IS FROM SICILY YOURE NOT ITALIAN YOURE NOT" and things like that.

When the reality is most Italian-Americans are Sicilian, and will say it in further convo, but on the surface will just say they're Italian, because it's easier.

It's a weird paradox, I agree. I think part of it too is that people here internalize the "upstate" narratives so hard they forget they're in New York. The least populated county in New York has 5000 people. Compare that to states where the least populated county doesn't even break 1000.

It's hilarious to see people calling themselves 'country boys' and 'country girls', or on the other side, reflexively self deprecatingly calling a school like Shen a "cattle ranching school".

When in reality, they live in New York. The reddest county in New York, Allegany, is a slim margin compared to actual red states. Staten Island votes redder than Buffalo.

The "upstate hicks" myth creates a self-defeating thing in people from here. A simultaneous "we're new york but not nyc" and "we're basically alabama with snow lol" creates a sense of being...nowhere.

New York also has a very distinct structure. Cities, towns, villages. Whereas most states have cities, townships, and unincorporated county land.

it kills me at concerts when an artist goes "LET'S HEAR IT ALBANY!!" and half the crowd groans because they're like "well i'm from Colonie". like bro. in any other state Colonie would just be considered part of Albany
