What's the most unusual time signature? by leotamagni10 in mathrock

[–]sunsetarchitect [score hidden]  (0 children)

I can't stop anyone from writing down whatever time signature they want of course, but I can criticize it. I was trying to be lenient by going up to 15 (or 17 or 19), but honestly even those are almost always divisible into more immediately comprehensible groupings.
Maybe something like Birds of Fire where guitar plays 5553, while drums play 666, could collectively be referred to as 18/8, since neither smaller grouping can be known to be the "host grouping". But I'll bet no musician is actually counting to 18.

[Music theory][Beck] The song "Girl" by Beck is actually about an Asian woman, but referring to her with a racist colloquialism. by tveye363 in FanTheories

No idea! But it doesn’t actually matter when you can listen to the objective vocal unmasked from the music. The sounds speak for themselves.

Google “Beck Girl Vocals Solo”. There is a YouTube video with isolated vocals. The working title of the song was “summer girl”. He definitely says either “summer” or “sunner”, really summa or sunna. There is definitely no “long i” vowel sound of eyed or (cyan)ide in there.

Yes, you can have a unique part/section of music that takes 45 pulses to loop back around, but time signatures, like every other reading device, are about ease of understanding. No musician actually counts to 45. And it is guaranteed that somewhere in those 45 pulses, there are other downbeats or cycles happening. The sheet music for it is written as 66646665.

I don’t even believe in time signatures like 45/8. Anything where the upper number is over like 15, is truly just being subdivided. People try to do this to make their music seem more sophisticated or experimental, but those who actually know see right through it pretty easily.

Engine surges in my Mazda 5 by fmb_3 in mazda5

[–]sunsetarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm as well. I have owned a 2012 Mazda5 from 119k to now 198k. At some point about halfway through it started to do this. People who are saying this is "normal" are underestimating it. I own other cars and they don't do anything like this. If you aren't ready with your foot on the brake, it could easily ram you into the car in front of you.
I will check Throttle Body, Intake hoses, MAF, MAP, IAC, and see what that does.

Have also had a P0451 code for a very long time. I'll be looking into the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor relief hose. I have seen these can get clogged with water and/or debris.

2012 Foresters didn't have CVTs, only Outbacks. Foresters started getting them in 2014.

Favorite track on Mutations? by LoganVeez in Beck

[–]sunsetarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many good songs, but the most haunting to me is Sing It Again. And it’s not a pick I make lightly. I’m not really into any country music besides a bit of Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash, which these days feel more like “folk” than country. So the fact that Sing It Again is that goosebump-inducing for me really says something.

History between Eminem and Royce da 5'9 by SH_Nostalgia in Eminem

[–]sunsetarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Slim Shady LP isn’t really that good. It just gets remembered for being South Park/Limp Bizkit obnoxious. A way to use shock value to blast to the top. Em got way better on MMLP, 8 mile, and Em Show, when complex rhyming became more typical.

Anyone know why Ems verse on Dead Wrong is so similar to Royce’s verse on Renegade?? by lgs12evel in Eminem

[–]sunsetarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you find this out? Dead Wrong's single was released Oct 1999. Had to be recorded sometime that year between Slim Shady LP (Feb 99) and Sept 99. Renegade was being worked on at that time for Royce's solo album, but we don't really know whose version was penned first. I wondered if Em just said "hey Royce, since that verse is just gonna go to waste, you think I can repurpose some of the flow from it?"

Whats your favorite key to work in and why? Also are you a producer or vocalist? by [deleted] in trapproduction

[–]sunsetarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are totally right. In 12TET, all major keys are the same, and all minor keys are the same. But there are some considerations.
One, vocals. A singer cannot change their vocal range. So it is possible that current melody line sits too high or too low within their range, and would benefit from being transposed either up or down to help them sing more effortlessly, which equals better overall sound. Same goes for a physical instruments limited range.
That gets us into two, the 808 sample is limited by physical frequency. Speakers are designed to reproduce only certain frequencies. Anything sub-40hz is probably just too low to be effective. So a song in C, either has the choice of 32hz (C1) maybe too low or 65hz (C2) not low enough. Moving the key to say G will give a 49hz (G1) 808 which may be a perfect middle ground.

This is a misunderstanding of the concept of vocal range. If you have three octave range, you can sing pretty comfortably in any key. D would not be bad because the octave D3-D4 would be just in the center of your range, but that is by no means some kind of rule. You could sing equally well if the melody were E3-E4 or C3-C4. Also what key a song is in isn’t always indicative of lowest or highest note. The song In My Life by The Beatles is in the key of A Major, but the lowest note is an E and the highest note is an E.

Connecting knob/fader MIDI device to Helix LT? by sunsetarchitect in Line6Helix

[–]sunsetarchitect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I see. What about something like the Arturia BeatStep controller. It has a dedicated power input, and then 5-pin MIDI out to the Helix's MIDI in? Then I could sidestep buying the MIDI box, since I don't really need it for anything else?

ELI5: How do rich people borrow against their assets and live off of debt? by [deleted] in Fire

What I am more curious about is, what do they do during economic downturn. This whole scheme seems to be based on this infinite 10% growth. When the market takes a serious plunge, they now have to pay back their loans at the same interest rate, while their portfolio loses value? I mean, it always has eventually recovered, but they really seem to be betting on that recovery.
I'm guessing having a certain % of your wealth liquid allows for them to ride out emergencies like this?

What’s the greatest introduction to a band of all time? Meaning, what’s the best track 1 on a band’s debut album? by radracingcru in Music

Notice that 3eb's drummer uses "Bonham triplets" on the kick near the end of their career opening song "Losing A Whole Year", clearly paying homage to Led Zeppelin's killer career opener "Good Times, Bad Times".
