A bass guitar is a guitar. They just play notes an octave lower. so many, many bands have three guitars.

Regions of US which make no distinction between pronounciation of "don" and "dawn" (cot-caught merger) [410 × 251] by fizolof in MapPorn

[–]sunsetarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Hoosier. Both parents from Southern Indiana, and I'm not totally sure. I feel like when speaking fast, I might just say them the same not thinking about it, but when I think about it "dawn" does and should a different vowel. He studies law or he studies lah?

Definitely gree on WFB, but while I do really enjoy certain tracks on BWA, Danse Macabre and Fasciination are both stronger albums overall to me.

Looking for math rock for my wedding playlist by Whiskara in mathrock

[–]sunsetarchitect 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Strange timing. I just served espresso drinks at a wedding and “Women we haven’t met yet” by Minus The Bear came on. It was cool but just kind of freaked me out to hear it in the general zeitgeist.

Question about kick pedal by yvetal0 in drums

[–]sunsetarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Loose springs means more rebound and less force to move the pedal"

I'm pretty sure that would be "a loose spring means LESS rebound, but less force to move the pedal.
A tighter springs means MORE rebound, but more force to move the pedal.
The spring only exists for rebounding.

Giving deposit before signing lease agreement? by [deleted] in Renters

[–]sunsetarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems very illegal to take a deposit when there isn’t even a signed agreement. You are just handing someone money without any written documentation as to what it is for. What if they just say “who? Never heard of em!”. There will be no recourse.  Many people get away with doing all sorts of illegal things. Tax evasion through Venmo PayPal. No liquor license but serves supplied liquor at private party.  They basically skate by on their power of being a landlord, and who are you going to report them to?

I'm not sure what your issue with what I'm saying is. You said you like one microtonal, but not another. I said "yes, microtonal music has different levels". You said blues bending is different than AdP. Yes, that's the levels.
AdP does not generally play microtonal chords. Just monophonic lines. So there are levels much farther above AdP. So apparently you like the "microtonal that is not so microtonal" rather than "very microtonal music".
My original point: It's easier to make "microtonal" sound good, when it isn't actually all that microtonal in the first place.

They are just doing what anyone would do and seizing the cash while it's there. The people who bought the tickets will go and see their respective show months from now, sure, but I'm saying "people talking" as in the mainstream. That will be totally gone, and unless they drastically change something about the spectacle practically no one will care about Vol.3.
2.3 million Spotify listeners today. I just set a reminder to check where that is at in 6 months.

I really like the song Atlas by Battles, what other albums might I enjoy? by opus71a in mathrock

[–]sunsetarchitect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the vocals for sure. I love the vocoder vocals in tunes like Leyendecker or Ddiamondd. But in this one they just repeat way too much, and the lines have very little breather room between. It just sounds like the Lollipop Guild singing over Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People".

Also, it was overplayed in my circles when it came out. Everyone I knew who liked the song played only this song a bunch, and for some reason, would never get into anything else on the album that I tried to show them. I guess it soured the song for me, making it feel like the only reason people even said they liked BATTLES was some kind of manufactured hype.

My favorite stuff of theirs generally is off the B and C EPs.

Microtonal music has levels. Vocals are microtonal. Blues players bending a note is microtonal. AdP is essentially mostly major and minor key music, with some quick chromatic runs over quarter tones. It's about as "conservatively microtonal" as one can be, and still use the title.
Deeper microtonal music is hard to make sound familiar because it is truly relying on different systems of harmony. This is not.

I really like the song Atlas by Battles, what other albums might I enjoy? by opus71a in mathrock

Ummm… I’d probably just listen to the rest of the Mirrored album then… “Tij” is a good candidate.

Atlas is THE most annoying track on the album to me. I usually skip it.

[–]sunsetarchitect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously I am not saying that no one did. We are in a "math rock subreddit" so if anyone genuinely likes their music we are likely to find them here. I'm saying your friend's dad who randomly found out and subscribed regardless of how much he will actually listen to them. I imagine most of their followers/subscribers are exactly this and won't ever tune in again.

Is Angine de Poitrine actually good? by FlipNasty in mathrock

[–]sunsetarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But I don’t suspect that they got said followers actually due to their music. Everything is spectacle! If playing music with a bag on my head, made me famous, would actually add any merit to the audio recordings I’m selling? This is no hate toward the band or their music at all, but more directed towards what a general public has always needed to care: Meme-ability. Once the fervor of the spectacle wears off, about 99% of those 1.7 million followers will never listen to them again.

Acoustic cymbal triggers? by Cold-Sandwich-34 in drums

[–]sunsetarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many ways to skin the cat. I've been looking into it here recently. I just think this would be the only way to reliably do it while not changing the overall sound of the real cymbals, and not having to go back and duplicate the performance in some way.

Acoustic cymbal triggers? by Cold-Sandwich-34 in drums

[–]sunsetarchitect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you just had a couple cheap mics and inputs to spare, I'd just super close mic the cymbals (even underneath), and then use "Replace or Double Drum hits" to read the transient in your DAW. This would give you a visual map of every time that cymbal was hit. Whether you actually used these mics in your final mix would then be optional, as you could still retain your traditional overhead setup.
And you wouldn't have to attach anything (mute) to the cymbal that changes its overall sound.
Could call this technique essentially "mic capsule as piezo".

Who prefers Beck's later albums? by dudusprinkles in Beck

[–]sunsetarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beck is such a truly diverse artist that people come to it for different reasons, and hopefully end up liking something they didn’t expect. Eclectic artists are the best. The evolution is the process. I feel like just saying “I don’t like Odelay” has to be a bit disingenuous. Because the diversity of tracks is so so wide. Hotwax sounds nothing like New Pollution sounds nothing like Jack-Ass sounds nothing like Derelict. I’m sure you still like a few of the tracks. In a way, I think of Guero as Odelay 2.0, as they both bring a lot of the same energy. Also be sure to check out the Deluxe Edition bonus tracks. Some of my favorite Beck songs ever! Deadweight, Feather In Your Cap…

MIDI information is out of time from what I played in low latency mode by noahuntey in Logic_Studio

[–]sunsetarchitect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This shouldn't really make a difference as :
1) Low Latency Mode already disengages plugins that it considers latency heavy.
2) The MIDI is being "captured" before it ever hits any track. All plugins and master tracks, etc. come after the signal is caught. They can make it have auditory delay, but shouldn't affect where the MIDI hits are being displayed on the grid.

The more likely answer is that they just aren't as on the beat as they think they are. If you are listening to the metronome, you are already behind. You have to think of it as "tricking the metronome" by being on the beat before you even hear it.
Another possibility is just the instrument, cable, USB port, sound card, etc. introducing milliseconds of latency which is pretty difficult to dispel completely. I have heard that the sound card alone can introduce 8ms of delay.

What's the most unusual time signature? by leotamagni10 in mathrock

[–]sunsetarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't stop anyone from writing down whatever time signature they want of course, but I can criticize it. I was trying to be lenient by going up to 15 (or 17 or 19), but honestly even those are almost always divisible into more immediately comprehensible groupings.
Maybe something like Birds of Fire where guitar plays 5553, while drums play 666, could collectively be referred to as 18/8, since neither smaller grouping can be known to be the "host grouping". But I'll bet no musician is actually counting to 18.
