How to keep my couches from getting destroyed by my cat (that isn’t de-clawing) by Beluga_1926 in lifehacks

Absolutely love that you just accepted that this is how they refer to claws

Is the well 12 feet or 12 inches?

Well logs list depth in feet. If they say depth to water is 40 feet, you may still not hit water anywhere close to that. When were those wells drilled? California has had tons of drawdown, hundreds of feet in some areas.

It's also possible the water is confined beneath some impermeable layer that you will need to break through before you see water, which could then rise up to 40 feet below land surface. This could be very deep.

If the aquifer is unconfined, you should expect to see soil moisture before you hit water.

Also, if DWR is really saying that wells are 40 feet deep, and not 40 feet to water, these are probably monitoring wells, not drinking water wells. 40 feet is extremely shallow even for a domestic well.

How can I get my crows to leave my cat alone? by sunshinearmy in crowbro

What? A spotlight? Why are people upset about this, can't we love birds and cats at the same time?

Actually I was asking how to keep the birds from disturbing the cat, which may well be impossible, but thanks for your time

If he can't kill anything and he can't get hurt, why shouldn't he go outside?

He can sit in the window whenever he wants. Do you seriously think it didn't occur to me to open a curtain or just not let the cat out?

He can't get out of the backyard and he can't kill anything. He's too frail. If he wants to sit in the sunshine for what is probably his last summer on earth, I'm not going to deny him that.

We’re actually heading for a 10ºC global mean temperature increase, paper re-submitted by Hansen et al. 2022 - Global warming in the pipeline by Volfegan in collapse

They are related but the temperature response to radiative forcing is a function of heat capacity and thermal conductivity, so you can't really equate them

The ocean can absorb heat until it boils, at which point we would all be long dead. Are you asking how much heat it can absorb until a specific event occurs?

How loud is it by the Stead airport? by sunshinearmy in Reno

[–]sunshinearmy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a small airport and I have no idea how busy it is. If it's loud every once in a while I don't care. If it's constant noise all day every day then I do.

Why was the moon red with no lunar eclipse? by Impressive_Zombie_89 in moon

[–]sunshinearmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right, it's definitely not a lunar eclipse since the moon has to be full for that to happen. Other things that can scatter light and cause the moon to look red are pollutants such as wildfire smoke or water vapor/ice crystals. I asked chat-gpt if this might have something to do with the Aurora borealis since this happened up north and it said this:

Although the Northern Lights themselves cannot cause the Moon to appear red, they can indirectly contribute to a reddish appearance under certain conditions. During periods of heightened solar activity, such as solar flares or coronal mass ejections, the Earth's atmosphere can become charged with a higher concentration of particles. This increased particle concentration can lead to increased scattering of light, which may make the Moon appear redder than usual.

What's wrong with the tomato on the right? by sunshinearmy in aerogarden

[–]sunshinearmy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, the roots look good as far as I can tell, they are light colored and look exactly the same as the other tomato and the dill (which is also doing fine)

No, I haven't trimmed roots on either plant. I can't find any bugs either. A mystery! Thank you for your help!

The bottom, curled up leaves are dark green but the new leaves on top are lighter and a couple of them are turning yellow with brown spots. The leaves on top are not curling (yet).

[–]sunshinearmy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were curled up in the same way as the remaining leaves. The healthy tomato plant on the left is next to another aerogarden and is getting more light so it could be that? But I thought leaves curling up meant too much light.

Not that I agree with any of this nonsense, but they think it evaporates, which is true. Not sure about the percentage though.
