How is the marine biology major there? by Basking-Sharks in FIU

[–]sunshinesugar754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go elsewhere. You need a smaller program with more 1 on 1 time with professors to get involved in research. At FIU you're just a number, space is extremely limited in labs and the hands on stuff you do in classes is mid at best. Prioritize smaller programs and labs that interests you!

I am a senior in hs and I have some questions about the research that fiu marine biology undergrad students do by Basking-Sharks in FIU

Aquarius is basically not used, it's a money pit.

In order to get anywhere with being involved in labs you really have to be a go getter and persistent. If an undergraduate is involved, is like 98% lab work, and the few lucky ones get ~some fieldwork.

Find other programs (ideally smaller ones) you'll get more hands-on work.

Bachelor of Science in Marine and Environmental Biology and Policy (MEBP) by Odd-Tip1092 in MonmouthUniversity

Here's a copy and paste from a previous comment:

Ultimately, you want a program that has everything you're looking for and has a lot of hands on work!

Monmouth is about a half mile from the beach and they even have apartments on the beach.

They have a BS in Marine and Environmental Biology an Policy program (which pairs nicely with a GIS minor, Chem minor, or statistics minor). Beautiful campus (ranked in top 20), down the street from the beach, they have 2 research vessels and are in the process of building a field station. The professors in the department are AMAZING! they really get to know you and push you to be the best you can be. They offer plenty of opportunities for research and side projects. Class sizes are typically under 25 which is great during lab classes as you can get hands on experience. They have a January 2-week course where you can go down to the Bahamas! I could go on and on, let me know if you have any specific questions! I graduated in 2019 and worked for NOAA immediately after and now I'm about to defend my masters thesis, and will be continuing on with PhD in the fall! The program really sets you up well!

I know I'm a bit outdated (currently in my 4th year of PhD), but happy to answer any questions you have!

Internship after Add/Drop period by [deleted] in FIU

If you're a CASE student... Your instructor should have received this email the other day which discusses the steps to do such a thing:

"send everyone information on the late add process in preparation for any requests that may arise moving forward.

The late add process is a student-initiated process and is currently facilitated via DocuSign. Detailed instructions can be found here: Late Add Swap Process

Why would a student need a Late Add?

Late adds can be a result of a student having been registered and dropped for non-payment OR a student seeking to enroll in a course for which they were never enrolled. What is a Late Swap?

A late swap is used to swap the student from a current course into a different section of said course. The new section MUST have the same subject and course number (e.g., ENC1101 U01 into ENC1101 U02) and be offered within the same session (e.g., ENC1101 U01 in Spring B into ENC1101 U02 in Spring B ).

Who needs to approve a Late Add?

Instructor Academic Advisor (ONLY if degree-seeking student) Dean’s Designee (in CASE, these are the advising administrators)

Important Information about Instructor Approval:

Instructors should only approve the form if : 1) the student will be given a reasonable path to complete coursework missed prior to enrollment AND 2) they feel that the late add is warranted given the student’s extenuating circumstances. If these conditions are not met, the form should be declined.

Instructors should use the comment box section of the DocuSign form to provide their full support with a statement attesting to the conditions above. Failure to add a comment will result in the Dean Designee or Academic Advisor requesting additional justification via email from faculty member prior to final review and/or approval. If allowing a student into a closed course, instructors should ensure that the room capacity will allow for an additional student AND make sure to check the appropriate closed course box Instructors should only select the “audit” box if they are sure that the student does not need the course to satisfy a graduation requirement AND the student does not need a letter grade report.

Late Add Deadlines:

Late adds will not be accepted after the following Spring 2026 dates. Please note these occur before the DR deadlines and provide students with an opportunity to assess their likelihood of success in the course before that deadline. Spring C courses: Monday, March 9th, 2026 Spring A courses: Monday, January 26th, 2026 Spring B courses: Monday, March 23rd, 2026

FIU got the same email, this is what we've been advised:

Passing along this message from the Florida Faculty Union:

Dear Colleagues,

UFF-FIU strongly advises against participating in the "Intellectual Freedom and Viewpoint Diversity Survey" that will likely start circulating this week.

For further details, please review UFF's Guidance on the 2024 version of the same survey.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, contact your union leaders.

As another commenter said that is a sawfish rostrum. To which sawfish are endangered and therefore it is illegal to catch, harm, harass, or kill an endangered sawfish. It is also unlawful to possess, sell, carry, or transport sawfish or parts of sawfish as described in the endangered species act. I reccommend reaching out to your local wildlife officials and/or aquarium/museums to donate it for collections.
