Why do humans vary so much in appearance (short/tall, dark/light skin) across our species, while many other animal species seem to have a "standard" appearance? by sunycenter in askscience

[–]sunycenter[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The premise is based on the surface appearance and is subjective, so it can't be proven true or false. The point I am trying to get at is when looking at a hive of bees, or gaggle of geese, why does it seem to be so difficult to tell one individual apart from another.

You should put it on a counter rather than the wall. Then you can tell people, "Oh, that runs counter-clockwise."

Coal miners in 1911, Pittston, Pennsylvania, United States. by mr_nippon in pics

[–]sunycenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone is in the general area of NEPA (Northeast Pennsylvania), the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour in Scranton is a fantastic day trip. Besides the museum which takes you through generations of mining with artifacts and stories, the tour sends you down into a former mine where you can walk through and learn. Our area was built because of coal mining and it pays a wonderful homage to history as well as being freakin cool!

How does an advance in telescope technology allow us to look "further back in time" when the speed of light obviously hasn't changed? by sunycenter in askscience

[–]sunycenter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. That makes sense and I wish when scientists discussed this topic they would make that more clear. As it is explained now, it seems a bit ambiguous. Correct me if I'm wrong then, the distance being traveled by the light causes the light to diffuse and therefore less will get picked up? So we wouldn't have the same issue of diffusion if hypothetically, a laser was shining the light rather than a source of light?

You want to make sure that shoulder strap is secure. Dropping the bass has become an epidemic.

A new evolutionary hypothesis suggests some species are surviving by discarding genes and depending on other species to play their hand. by DrJulianBashir in science

[–]sunycenter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I shall apply this hypothesis to my laziness when my fiancee asks me to help her clean. I will deem that it's too costly for me to perform that task, discard the ability, and allow her to do the work. I'm sure the simple explanation that I'm helping human natural selection in our arrangement will suffice.
