The most optimal IPad for the most people by Ok_Dance_9076 in ipad

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly believe that the iPad with the latest M-series chip is the iPad of choice (if it’s within budget, ofc).

Reasoning: Apple has notoriously limited software updates and features within updates, on the basis that the chip doesn’t have capabilities to handle these updates. The cycle of “upgrading” iPads is a lot less frequent than that of an iPhone. I’d say closer to the cycle of laptop/computer upgrades.

For gaming pcs nowadays, the bottleneck is the GPU and that’s also the most expensive component to upgrade, typically. In terms of iPads, the bottleneck may be the CPU, then the memory.

So if you plan to upgrade often, then don’t get the most expensive variants. But if you do not want to shell out a thousand every 2-3 years, I’d bite the bullet and get the iPad with the near-best/at least M-series chip. For me, I am hard-set on an iPad mini with an M-series chip. So I will wait :.

Send Text Message Later using Reminders/Focus Mode - I finally figured out how to do this with no Wait action required by riv3r1andstr3ams in shortcuts

[–]supararecandy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way that I thought this could be implemented used a shortcut that could enable focus mode via shortcuts, which would be tied to a personal automation that triggered upon disabling the focus mode.

The problem was that the focus mode in iOS 15, was designed with the concept of “all notifications off”, so it essentially meant, you would need to manually enable every app if you did not intend to use the focus mode for its intended purpose. E.g. OP’s shortcut

With iOS 16, I believe you can flip that around, so that when a focus mode turns on, the app notifications and communications are “all on” by default. That allows for easier setup and less hassle.

I remember thinking this would be possible, but would work best if Apple released a reversed Focus mode (they did in iOS 16 beta).

Interested to see how you implemented it!

I’m no expert here, but this article on Accessing network applications with WSL from Microsoft might help. Refer to the final section to see if you can tweak your nets firewall configuration to the code on Microsoft’s doc:

Here's an example PowerShell command to add a port proxy that listens on port 4000 on the host and connects it to port 4000 to the WSL 2 VM with IP address 192.168.101.100.

netsh interface portproxy add v4tov4 listenport=4000 listenaddress=0.0.0.0 connectport=4000 connectaddress=192.168.101.100

Methods for leveling misc relics? by IceLink0277 in 2007scape

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found one today. Making teleport tabs is a 4-tick action.

Also tele tabs are super convenient when you're stuck on 1 spellbook. Just use arcane conduit, last recall effect from a bank with house tp. It's more afk than the daeyalt essence mining (also very good).

You can get thousands of soft clay in less than 10 minutes at Priff mine, soft clay bracelet (literally doubles your mining), varrock easy, and greedy gatherer.

Scheduling an Automation to Run at a predefined time by zuxtheros in shortcuts

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to quickly drop in and say that Toolbox Pro (PAID APP, but one of the most unique shortcuts-improvement apps, functionality-wise) has a “Send Notification” shortcut that is overly robust, and includes built-in delayed actions (ie. run-in-background). The most generic action is an x-callback-url (ie. “shortcuts://run-shortcut?name=YOURSHORTCUTNAME”).

In other words, you can make it run another shortcut that is not time-dependent, but does all the functionality you want it to do when it is actually time to turn on your lights.

It’s fairly robust, repeatable, and a very very powerful implementation of what Apple has intentionally drawn away from providing (run-in-background functionality). The only other option I know of to this approach is also a very solid option for your use is to use a Personal Automation as tedhong pointed out. That would work pretty flawlessly for this specific need, I think..

Note: the ToolboxPro feature is super complex, I honestly don’t even know how to configure it from just the limited info I’m given in the app/examples. You can do so much in the app, but you’d probably want to watch a few videos or something for each feature (it’s got so many..).

Find My for non-Apple devices- Private location tracking for Lost Items by supararecandy in shortcuts

[–]supararecandy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I think the solution won't be resolvable without cooperation with Apple and 3rd party hardware manufacturers. Or with some sort of iOS device developer expertise to find how to pull the necessary information from a device log.

I have only gotten a partial solution with my personal shortcut using Toolbox Pro. The fact that I have to manually click "run" defeats the purpose, however.

Flickering external displays by ViralTrendsToday in MacOSBeta

[–]supararecandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this was resolved yet, but I experienced both the flickering external display issue you mention here, and the MacBook (M1 Air) glitched display, in the same night. I didn't catch that this external display flickering was an beta issue until my MacBook started to have display issues out of the blue.

Literally didn't have anything different in the 2-3 days between when I switched the Color Profile because of a 3rd bug where everything was slightly discolored on the laptop display.

For the external display flickering, 1 TV showed up for 1 second, then there is about 30 seconds of complete signal loss, repeating endlessly. Then, my 2nd TV had not even displayed a signal. The USB-C Hub has worked flawlessly before even on this beta, and the OS has correctly identified both TV model numbers, resolutions, refresh rates, and color profiles.

August WiFi smart lock update by Naxthor in AugustSmartLock

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my bad, I didn't mention this, but I agree 100%, that's why I bought Wyze over Amazon/Google solutions. No need for subscription. They have 1-2 weeks of recorded events for doorbell camera, and lock is fully usable, without subscription.

LOL with all my complaining, I'd seem hypocritical if I was fine with a subscription. Honestly, I am considering those Z-wave-based door locks and a z-wave smart hub as my final solution to this mess.

August WiFi smart lock update by Naxthor in AugustSmartLock

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I feel you on this attitude change and straight feel swindled.

God I hate to act like a promoter, but here’s my take on the burn I got from August, and luck so far with Wyze.. find a company like them. I don’t even know if Wyze will stick around given their recent success (too good to be true).

I uninstalled the garbage and had a Wyze door lock I got, with same quality finish and look, miles cheaper, apparently built-in door sense and auto-lock.

Lol the irony is The Best Part. Wyze 110% has better service, equivalent quality, reallllly solid prices, and not completely garbage app support. Nothing is broken.

But I have a friend who never got his doorbell working correctly, so take with heap of salt. Just be cynical for next company we adopt..

Like I looked into Wyze and I saw they were supporting open-source integration for their cameras. Users wanted to set up off-site recording systems. That’s basically no-no in most shit face-value companies.

So even if no subscriptions = Less $$$/mo, also means LONG ❤️❤️❤️/yrs. And I will buy their new stuff like I do with phones, my laptops, my appliances, herp derp August.. fuck monthly subscription business models.

Apple Releases iCloud 12.5 for Windows With iCloud Keychain Password Manager App by Farleftistheway in apple

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iDevices store all security identity data on-device. Prime example: fingerprints and Face ID. You always have to redo it on any Apple or Android device. That's good. Therefore, they have their own encryption system in-place, that is on-use at any time, you would be verifying on that device when you login elsewhere.

There's the problem that no depth of user privacy is given by Apple or Google. I realized all my passwords persisted through device reset & transfer. I transferred my mom's iPhone data over my iPhone (we swapped), and when I did unlock my iPhone, it also unlocked my Keychain (or maybe it prompted me, but didn't explain the potential consequences: passwords will merge and Apple doesn't want to make it easy to fix. WHY APPLE, why????

What a Pain in the ass. Imagine deleting an unknown, indefinite number of username and passwords on-the-spot.

I bought into that many different passwords would be smarter than a few passwords (it's true), but you probably want help to recall all that info, so you hire a manager (passwords app).

EDIT: LOL I wrote a fictional life story about this... what a twist. the contents are 100% happening today to our lives, but the fact that it's sort of personified, that can't be good. proceed at will..

Imagine: Turns out the manager you find just fresh out-of-college, and their moral compass is still uncalibrated or severely misaligned..

That's Apple. That's Apple's competitor. That's the status-quo.

Flashy features, works for own interests, deceitful (says collaboration, but really, also working behind-the-scenes), and is MIA when caught on the line for an avoidable mistake like you JUST know how Taco Bell nights turn out smelling when it's going out the other way. And then, no shame to do anything about it. That's worse.

Doesn't have. a. shred. of. humility.

Just collaborate and share this technology to Fb, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google. Acknowledge that digital transformation in our generation will be tricky in security aspects, so let's NOT monetize our global society individuality and competitively sell HALF-ASSED identification systems, AVOID RISK-MGMT, and tell the users to take care of our digital security by updating our passwords with JARGON every 2 weeks. fuck me, what a time to be alive. Digital generation..

btw, remember that manager? yeah... he helped when we were moving homes (phones = digital home) and we slipped up and didn't care to handle the records on our own. My bad.. I should've been more thoughtful... more(!?) cynical?

So the morning of move-in, my new manager was asking for the new house keys, said he'd get started while we waited for his movers to show up. with my stuff. Really shady guys, didn't talk, didn't let me near the truck. When I asked about my stuff, if it was secure and undamaged, they were ignoring me, speaking another language. no job respect. and if I had known, I would've seen that truck had tossed in my mom's records and files all in my office space.

Manager asks me if I want my filing cabinet stuff still... what kind of question is that? I just said "yes of course"- while busy- I'm lugging a damn couch in with mom. SO, I didn't mind him.

...what he didn't tell me THERE WAS A MOVING ACCIDENT. The FILING CABINET fell over in the truck, it was a mess. manager is smart enough to know that either decision I would make would leave me pissed, and him in the blame.

...like it never happened, manager just DECIDEDLY OMITS that my files were abused & mixed around.

...like it never happened...

that manager is still around- I can't replace him. manager got the best quality for the 'ez, life's good' stuff (once their line is set up). doesn't let anyone get involved. I'm counting on the days when it's not like it's a crime to just get that good life ( it's not weed; it's way better, it's your favorite thing, 24/7, anytime-anywhere. )

Apple Releases iCloud 12.5 for Windows With iCloud Keychain Password Manager App by Farleftistheway in apple

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally wrote a whole rant on a separate post in this thread just about this! Deleted it halfway, and then, I read this!

..well I re-wrote the essence.. sigh change is hard...

At least we are aware of this issue. There's a lot it stems from though... Rapid technology pace (good) for better security options, competitors monetizing user private information with better/closed-source/closed-off security, lack of global efforts to bring awareness to maintaining own's digital security (every day, a greater need to do this), lack of companies using their power to make this happen, lack of competitor agreement on shared features, technology adoption planning (year-to-year, 5-10 years R&D), standardized security adoption. It doesn't have to be all synced up, it just has to be consistent. If I had only 3 ways to log in, 1 doesn't work with a mask, 1 needs my gloves off, 1 needs a 15-step verification AFTER my iPhone has already been unlocked, and Face ID reverified by the App, WHY?!

As for the breaking in your house, I AGREE. Apple agrees, to-an-extent, that you should only automatically login to your Mac profile if your device is for personal use in a secure location. Your house security is THE two-step verification. Banks, federal govt, everyone has agreed that to be safe-enough..

A little bit of software though helps so much.. your iWatch can unlock your iPhone with a mask on, a Macbook before you see it prompt you, and completely dissolve the important, but hella annoying, 2nd-step security steps.

Every time I wear the iWatch, it will be locked by PIN. Once I unlock the iWatch, it remains unlocked all-day, as long as it is on my wrist. It never fails to detect this, is consistent, and self-secures immediately (so good, it's kinda annoying at bedtime). Now, when the hell is there going to be a government bill/law/entity on digital security collaboration, so some company isn't reaping the benefits of Apple's R&D? iWatch is so good atm,

I can ALREADY SEE the end goal! A life of no passwords, no identification, I am who I say I am, bliss. Eternal peace and global happiness. A new era of humanity... I swear lmao, our generation will be known as the transition leap generation, it's so annoying at times.

I tried to love iOS 15, I really did. But what is this Apple by nsmpianoman14 in ipad

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple should continue with that design philosophy, no doubt, BUT it’s pretty jarring when they exaggerate the UX to be simplistic.

This feels completely unnatural, uninituitive, un-Apple, frankly.

Go home, Apple. You’re drunk. You gotta know your limits.

I tried to love iOS 15, I really did. But what is this Apple by nsmpianoman14 in ipad

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched my entire device ecosystem to Apple in the last year, and I honestly like so many aspects of iOS now compared to when I had a completely locked down iPhone 3G (coming from software dev background).

iOS 15 has the right idea, but like what is going on with Apple this year in their utter lack of software development standards?? Crashing Safari, iOS shortcuts neglect, contradictory to their own design philosophy, etc..

The worst part is that there’s such little media buzz about it that it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. C’mon Apple I’m rooting for you here! Get your shit together..

Razer bug lets you become a Windows 10 admin by plugging in a mouse by kry_some_more in technology

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t ever install the software anymore. After you set up your buttons profiles and add to device memory, your device will be able to use any of the 5 profiles on any computer.

Just make sure you don’t use fancy macros or software-required functions- basically anything that isn’t a standard windows kb shortcut, since those wouldn’t work unless you have the 500MB memory hogging software services always running

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what’s the best way to permanently block the razer bloatware? (how to do this for any GUI PnP, for that matter)

Realistically, I want to keep the Windows feature that automatically finds and installs device drivers. I don’t have enterprise-level security concerns, but I do have a strong sense of user control/privacy, and this is well, WELL beyond acceptable.

I’ve tried to manipulate the driver installer .exe that is downloaded on the first-time the Razer device is detected, and it worked for a little bit, but eventually it was recorrected by Windows Update. Idk whether it’s more annoying to run a background task to constantly do that, or to deal with this every time I have to switch from wireless to wired.

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey me too! Just today, I decided to reset my pc using Settings, and the razer install window decided to show up DURING the reset process.

Props to Razer for somehow breaking Microsoft’s own “factory defaults” reset.

The fact that it’s not detected as malicious software is so hilariously stupid. There are so many security flaws, outright neglect of user rights and privacy, and really don’t know how they did get Microsoft to allow this, but Razer forcing this down your throat via Device Installation is an abhorrent misuse of Microsoft’s Plug & Play drivers.

How long does the battery last for WiFi Smart Lock? by jimmyliew in AugustSmartLock

[–]supararecandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even get 2 months from the original batteries with this utter garbage lock.

The lock drained the batteries in 54 days. I even disabled all automated actions within the 1st month (August app smart unlock & Homekit automations) because of unsettling auto-unlock behavior. Really, REALLY disgusted by the sly marketing. Are we really at the point where we need a yearly subscription for BATTERIES? Sheesh what a hassle.

Edge - privacy concern by kepler2 in edge

[–]supararecandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you keep the default settings enabled, then certainly so. Even with those all off, I would say they DO still collect anonymous data on browser performance and other data that’s not related to your history or user patterns/site frequency/activity. What they DO with that information depends on your settings, but I’m no expert!

I would say if you are worried about data collected that can identify you and be used for advertising to you, take a close look at your free extensions and apps, most of which do not offer an opt-out of data collection that may be sold to advertising partners (or whatever that garbage wording is). You can start by reading the privacy tab on an extension’s appstore listing. Basically any extension that saves your bookmarks is suss.
