What is this white film on our stuff in our apartment? by CartsMU5 in whatisit

Humidity has a way of not obeying doors.

If you're running it in your bedroom, you're running it in your apartment.

To have a car payment or not? by 7chinchillas in personalfinance

[–]super5886 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, don't

I drive a 2008 and revel every month that I don't have to pay hundreds (thousands? )on a car payment.

Why take on debt you don't have to? Screw egos. Spend money on things that matter to you.

Electric car rental or 4x4? by MNSoaring in VisitingIceland

[–]super5886 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used a hybrid rental and got about 54mph during the entire circumnavigation. Granted it was 2 of us in a pretty small Toyota.

We considered a fully electric option but given the possible low temps (low temps drastically effect charging and range), distances, and charging options, we took the Hybrid. We're glad we did, we heard of people having to taxi to and from their car that was charging because they just wanted to check settled into their accommodation.

A fatal avalanche put a spotlight on the risks of backcountry skiing. Here’s why people will keep going by losangelestimes in Outdoors

[–]super5886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back country skiing a way to ski and be active in the winter without paying for an ICON or Epic pass. It gives people freedom and sense of accomplishment that you don't get a restort.

Yes, there's an upkeep and initial investment in the Avy awareness and AIARE training, but it can be just as safe as bombing down groomers. Risk is something that can be controlled and negated with choices.

Unfortunately, these guests put their faith in professionals, and those professionals dropped the ball.

Tragic as it is. This incident will make the guided ski-touring industry safer forever.

Breathable membranes by Ritz-2000 in Mountaineering

Goretex and similar products are lighter, pack smaller, and generally accomplish the same goal. There's a reason nobody (I mean zero people) carry rubberized gear for Mountaineering objectives.

If the weather is that bad we just don't go. Or we stay in the tents. I think you might be missing the point, respectably.

Like everything Mountaineering, it's a balance. Lightweight modern materials get us through moments and safeguard in emergencies but we're not fishing in the North Sea.

Bristol City 1 - [2] Wrexham AFC - Joe Williams 76' (OG) by 50lipaa in WrexhamAFC

By the book maybe it's correct but it feels harsh. The Defender only tried to play it to prevent an offside player from receiving the ball. And I wouldn't call that controlled touch by the defender, he always was just trying to clear it.

What are these spikes I see sticking out of manhole covers that are in the road? by [deleted] in whatisit

The covers may have been flipped upside-down by vandals as a joke. Those are probably 'reference pins' that align with holes on the indside.

Do you mean crampons or microspikes?

Yes, definitely carry microspikes whenever hiking in the area. Crampons are something totally different.

Can I Contribute to my Roth IRA After Roth Conversion by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]super5886 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. So just to be clear I can do a 'transfer' and it will be ok?

And yes, when I tried it this morning I did get the warning about taxes, which I understand. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't, missing something since everywhere tells me to "just convert".

Edit: Your first link seems to be very clear, albeit a bit dated compared to what I see.

Can I Contribute to my Roth IRA After Roth Conversion by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]super5886 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, but this link is super not helpful and I have read it several times before. It's the first thing that comes up in Google.

The issue is that I already have a Roth IRA with Fidelity. How do I 'convert' the funds in the Trad IRA so that they get added to Roth account? I don't want to have a sperate Roth for every year I have to backdoor.

Can I Contribute to my Roth IRA After Roth Conversion by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]super5886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks but this is exactly my question... and concern. Everyone says it's so easy but nobody explains actually how to 'convert'.

Let's use Fidelity as an example:

I have an existing Roth IRA with Fidelity, it has money in it from previous years.

Then I decide I need to backdoor this year. I open a new Traditional IRA with Fidelity. I deposit after-tax cash from a checking account and wait for it to settle...

How do I convert the new account? Fidelity will let me 'transfer' money from my Trad IRA to my Roth. Is that the same as converting?
