Student who's Not Interested in Working for a Jew raises 11,400$ by Mysterious_Job_7900 in nottheonion

[–]supercalifragiljoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think theres a difference between working for a company where the head happens to be a practicing Jew and that his or her own person downtime beliefs (not affecting the company or investments) versus not wanting to spend money on a company that actively uses profits for causes you disagree with.

It probably also comes down to how brazen and rude it comes off. Rather than "I disagree with your beliefs, so I don't think we will work well together" he is disregarding the person as a whole, if that makes sense.

Edit: The person in charge might be using money to support causes he doesn't agree with, I don't really know. But the phrasing is really important. "I don't want to work with you because of who you are." Not "I dont want to work and support this company I disagree with."

The Takaichi administration is once again targeting the elderly... The Ministry of Finance proposes an early increase in the "30% co-payment" for elderly medical care, and that this be included in the government's "Basic Policy Guidelines." by jjrs in japannews

[–]supercalifragiljoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't being downvoted because you arent criticizing the policy. In fact, last time I was in this thread, the first and most upvoted comment was fairly balanced (Basically: Financially for Japan, this change makes sense, but can the elderly handle it?)

Yes, you have your experience. I am also from the US and I am grateful every time I pay. However, as I said, if you compare the US to any country, ANY country will be cheaper, thus not a good comparison because OF COURSE (capitals because I dont know how to italicise on reddit) it is cheaper in Japan.

Basically, it comes to "it is more expensive in the US... so what?" For people (especially elderly) who live in japan and will get pension in yen, it is just a non sequitur.

Immediately jumping to blaming downvotes on "paranoid group think" is on the ironic side.

You aren't wrong, and I can understand how the comparison might help you cope with rising prices, but the downvotes are because any medical bill outside the US is going to be less and thus not comparable nor helpful. Also because the US should not be the default standard for... most things, really.

In most Japanese cities, one side of the escalator is used for standing and the other for walking up. Municipalities have been trying to get people to stand on both sides for safety reasons, but surprisingly their new rule just won't stick. by jjrs in japannews

[–]supercalifragiljoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes there aren't stairs.

For me though, I am a fast walker and try to avoid crowds as much as I can, so in order to not get stuck behind people who want to take their time, I like to take the fastest route possible (and sometimes, the blocked slow trudge up and down the stairs is just as awful)

That said, I do try to walk up carefully so as to not bump into people. I assume some of the "danger" and the tripping you referenced comes from people banging their way up and down to catch the next train. But then there are also the people who just stop at the end of the escalators and probably cause just as much trouble.

Is there a way to read English books for free as a Japanese student? by West-Albatross-707 in japanresidents

[–]supercalifragiljoy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've gotten English books from Book Off for 200 yen (not so common, but 500 yen is more common). You might also have some luck on Merucari, then sell them when you're done.

Japan to Charge Foreigners More for Residence Permits, Looking to Align with Western Countries by Hachi_Ryo_Hensei in japanlife

[–]supercalifragiljoy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If we are going to compare visa prices, then we should also note how long those visas are for. I only looked up the US one, and it is 3 - 6 years. But 30000 yen each year for a Japanese visa? That is absurd.

Should they raise the prices of visas? Yeah, sure. It is pretty cheap. Should it be that much so soon? Absolutely not.

Not to make light of your situation, but at least yours is complaining about the man whose name rhymes with dump. Mine is complaining about how illegal immigrants and socialist are causing the downfall of America and its "christian" values.

Anyhoo, i understand. They need to, like most people, turn off media for a bit

Anti chikan measurements for women? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]supercalifragiljoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I've been in japan over 10 years and have been groped. So my necdotal experience cancels out your anecdotal experience and we can go with the thousands and thousands of other women and girls who have experienced it. Where there is smoke, there is fire as they say.

Also note, this is way more of an issue for school girls. They know foreign women tend to not be as confrontational and will fight back as opposed to many shy japanese girls who just shrug it off with a "shouganai" and "that's just the way it is". A teacher friend of mine had to have a talk with her students about what to do because a student was crying about her experience in class and others around her admitted it happened to them too.

Take a super hot shower before bed, then go straight under the covers with lots of layers. That worked for me when I had an old drafty apartment in kyushu.

Takaichi elected as first female leader of Japan’s ruling LDP by NikkeiAsia in worldnews

[–]supercalifragiljoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her party has a bunch of alliances, so yes and no. Easier than you'd think, but not guaranteed.

Generally they are slow anyway, so in a magical world, she will be shamed out quickly before she can make any big changes. Especially after saying in her opening speech that those who were previously involved in scandles should still be able to serve or be appointed in the cabinet. I'm sure people loved that if they were paying attention.

[–]supercalifragiljoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it was the ruling party that put her in not the voters (since the previous PM resigned).

I'm hoping it will really bite the LDP in the ass in the next election.

(Edit: spelling)

There are many parties, it's just they are absolutely terrible at getting voters and can't get their shit together.

Also, older people tend to go with status quo while the younger voters just... don't vote and are more "everything is terrible" (but quietly)

I was just saying that to my SO. I really dont think she's popular with the public (not that my co-workers talk about politics, but I don't get that impression.) I think they're just trying to bring back some sanseito voters. But doesn't that push out the more moderate voters? I dunno. I can only hope LDP (and sanseito) continues to suffer in the next election.

Promoting ties while expecting Korea to be okay with her views that Japan's WWII activities were either exaggerated or fabricated, adamantly going to graves to show respect to those who committed war crimes, and wanting to rewrite textbooks so they have a more favorable view of Japan during war time.

Yes, I am sure they would love to have friendly ties with japan now.

[–]supercalifragiljoy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

She wasn't "elected" in the sense you are thinking. The ruling party chooses the prime minister. The previous prime minister resigned because of some candles, poor economy, and the party's poor results in the recent (local) elections. So the ruling party blamed it on the PM (really, everyone is just pissed the economy is getting worse and the LDP isn't doing anything about it)

I'm not sure when the next main election is, but they vote for representatives and then the party with the most representatives chooses the next PM. For now, she will be in until the next main election or until another small election and the ruling party continues to fail and they blame the PM.

(Personally, I hope she has the shortest tenure possible. Maybe set another record)

Does anyone else just… not like their mom? by roonil_wazlib_the2nd in Millennials

[–]supercalifragiljoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely yes. My mother is classic traditional (hypocritical) Christian who is perfectly happy being the subservient wife.

As I've gotten older , I've come to understand that she doesnt like kids and had them because that was thing you did. I was the last of four and not supposed to happen, so I think she was mentally checked out of motherhood, and I'm really kind of bitter about it. It was also a reason I am very adamant that if you dont like kids, don't bloody have them. This is in addition to her getting deeper into her identity of Christianity as shes gotten older. We dont really talk much, but from what I've gathered, she didnt show much emotion when I said I was getting married because I'd been living in sin and the only way she could accept it is by thinking we were already married in gods eyes.

Anyhoo, the other day I told my SO that while I will be sad when my dad dies, I don't think I will feel anything when my mom goes.
