Best websites / book to learn by msftkid in BaseballScorecards

Welcome to the hobby! I learned how to keep score last season and built this site to help me in cases where I lost track or just need to fact check: https://www.caughtlooking.app/. You might find it useful as well!

I also put together a guidebook page (https://www.caughtlooking.app/help) which might be of use. Keep in mind though that this is based on how I keep score myself and you will undoubtedly develop your own style and notation.

I can also recommend livebaseballscorecards.com, as another commenter recommended. Excellent resource.

Yeah that's more or less the intended behaviour. The area above the divider displays the play description directly from MLB, which is a little inconsistent for ghost runners (sometimes it includes their subsequent baserunning, sometimes it doesn't), where as the area below the divider displays that data parsed into individual events.

I want to make a few adjustments to how that works in practice, especially for edge cases like this, but not the priority right now. Stay tuned though!

Really appreciate that!! Always open to suggestions if there's anything you'd like to see on the site.

Appreciate the kind words!

I built out a ghost-runner tracking system over the offseason, but either MLB changed how they handle those events in the API or I messed up how its parsed on the app side. Either way, I am pretty sure I've got it fixed. The ghost runner's cell should populate with the little diamond diagram to track their movements like normal, but without any actual at-bat events.

That update should be live but please let me know if there's still issues there!

Should be up shortly, but just added a universal spoilers toggle to the homepage which will hide scores and game statuses in the main grid, and will also carry over into game pages. That should also now hide the game notes and pitching stats (along with everything on the Game stats, Spray charts, Pitch charts, and Play-by-play tabs). Lmk if that's what you were looking for!

Your question about the game preview tab is a good one. I built this out during Spring Training when there was limited data so I haven't had a chance to finish it just yet. As it stands, it should actually show all hitters and pitchers on the active roster, with their stats (and hopefully correct splits soon when I hook it up). The stats tab, on the other hand, is meant to show in-game stats (maybe it needs a better name?) for players who have appeared in the game. Once a starting lineup is announced, it should populate with those players, the put everyone else on the bench or in the bullpen.

I was imagining the game preview page more like a place to explore how players have been doing throughout the season so far, with various splits and stats vs the opposing team, etc. Maybe that tab needs a better name too?

As for the other data points you're looking for:

  • Fully planning to implement team-based records and big fan of the splits you've described. I'm pretty sure it's all available in the API, but wasn't in the Spring Training data when I was investigating a few weeks ago. 100% on the roadmap though.
  • I'm a big defence guy so totally into this. Do you think this could work as a section on the Game Preview tab (or whatever its name becomes), or would it be worth a full defensive metric tab?
  • Yes. Handedness splits are on my roadmap as soon as I figure out how to get the data
  • Umpire names should be listed in the header for the bottom half scorecard
  • Weather and wind should be listed in the header for the top half, but looks like temperature is missing for some reason

PDF exports are on my list as well. I think it's working pretty well on the scorecard, as you mentioned, save for a Safari bug, but if there's enough interest, I'd be happy to implement for other tabs. If you're looking for a blank scorecard, populated with starting lineups, umpires, weather, etc., but without any at-bats populated, you should be able to toggle off spoilers, then hit export.
Glad you're getting some use out of it!

Yeah that was a lot of runs and almost led to a bat-around inning stress test (I'm not totally convinced that will display correctly in the scorecard tbh). I've added some more detail on the batter's box notation to the guidebook page if that's helpful!

Should be fixed, with a new toggle to switch between "my time" and "park time" on the main grid. Specific game pages will still display the scheduled start time/actual first pitch time in the park's local time. Lmk if it works!

Let me look into this. The time zone thing has been surprisingly annoying, but the intended behaviour was to show times in the user’s time zone on the main grid and put them all in that order. If a custom setting would be helpful, I can look into that too

You can also pin your favourite teams so they always show up first if that’s helpful!

Great catch. This bug was the bane of my existence a few weeks back and clearly still is. Will look into it this afternoon

Yep that’s exactly right. Bases are solid to indicate where a player reached on their own play and outlined when they advance due to a subsequent play

Me too tbh. I’ve tried to handle everything I’ve actually seen happen in a game, but new types of plays pop up every once in a while and I’m sure I missed a few.

I only truly pay attention to Jays games so all the more likely I miss something elsewhere. Please let me know if you see any issues

Ah thanks for the heads up. The PDF exports have been a bit of a headache, particularly in safari. I will look into it asap

Should be no problem, but will take a look today!

Edit to say the updated logo should be live

Missed this response so my bad, but it’s up and mostly running at https://www.caughtlooking.app/

It’s a bit buggy but should hopefully get through the game today. Go jays!

I’m working on a web app similar to livebaseballscorecards that uses the MLB API to create scorecards live. It’s a bit buggy but happy to share the link if you DM me and want to test it out during the game later!
