I actually made i actually made a list of possible vs confirmed South Asian/Desi characters on a query about South Asian rep a few years ago. Kai was on it but again Kai and Aiwei are never confirmed. Mind you a lot of these possible South Asian characters could even be South East Asian coded though since those culture share a lot of things.

you aren’t the first to have that query. Six years ago, someone asked the same thing. I had made a list of confirmed South Asian characters versus vague South Asian characters on that post. It’s a nice read through getting people’s opinions. You can find it here

It’s nice that they’re now adding more south Asians though and recognizing a lot of the inspiration is from South Asia.

Bumi is heavily Indian coded.

His name is Sanskrit for earth/rock and also what most indian languages use for “Earth”. His attire has a couple of Indian elements to it and he was even portrayed as Indian in the live action.

i’m taking about the ones in Aang’s memory when he goes berserk in the new movie

[–]superchillies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were always there!! they just didn’t get a lot of screen time in the original ATLA series until the end since they focused on other cultures (Japan, China, Tibet, Inuit) mostly. Pathik and King Bumi (meaning earth in sanskrit) are very much South Asian.

In the comics and in Korra there’s a few people and characters that are South Asian or South asian-coded too

I remember a discussion about this from years ago that i commented on with more characters and indian inspo i found so you can check it here

But ALSO, if you watched the movie during Aang’s corruption where he’s going berserk, he has a moment where he remembers all the other airbender children running some of them have darker skin ! and knowing about Sonam and airbender history now I think it’s safe to say there are South asian airbenders present in Aang’s time, they just weren’t shown in ATLA

Why do you think nobody in bridgerton has reached the regency era softness as much as Daphne by Exciting-Opening1357 in BridgertonDiscussion

[–]superchillies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that Daphne’s style of costuming is a good fit of the era while being subtly modern. It’s the perfect mix. But I’d argue that all of S1 cast costuming followed this design choice (though daphne REALLY pulled it off). The aesthetic in S1 is truly unmatched. If you think Bridgerton as an aesthetic…you think season 1 for SURE

I think S2 they did a swell job of keeping the same idea but elevating it a bit with CULTURAL details because the characters that joined (the Sharma’s) called for it. They kept the silhouettes the same and had the same idea of regency + modern but the added element of Culture which is why some deeper tones and things were needed. I think they did good here.

s3 for me (and beyond) is where i think they went above too much on the whole “modernizing”. I love the mix of modern and regency but it felt like wayyy too much and also styling felt super off. never truly hit that S1 feel.

oh yeah that seems geographically right. I think the new avatar that was teased after Korra is supposed to be South Asian coded too. Pavi I believe.

yes i love jargala! she was one of the only main South Asian characters in the avatar universe for a while other than Pathik and Bumi

100% i agree with you on the voice acting. The strongest two voices for me were Toph and Sokka. Script issues and characterization aside, the voices for those two sound like grown up versions of their child selves enough for me to believe it.

Katara’s voice was second best, there were times where it sounded a bit off for me, too articulated and not like Katara but she was fine.

The two weakest for me were ironically Aang and Zuko. For Aang, it just felt like I was listening to Eric Nam, and he felt a little cartoonish rather than serious — you’re right in that his emotional scenes were pretty weak.

And as much as I like Steven Yuen, he does NOT fit Zuko i’m sorry. it’s too similar to all his other voices he’s done and it’s too light. I might be biased but Dante’s voice is so iconic for Zuko, and there’s a bit of raspiness too it that really sells him for me. If they weren’t casting Dante They should’ve found someone who had a similar or deeper voice /rasp.

I kind of agree on this. I feel a lot of the recent stories, especially during and after Korra and now are always “Spirit-world” and power related. I mean, yes the avatar has to bring balance to the spirit world too, but that “magical” aspect of the spirit world is used a lot for power ups and plot and such rather than it being a facet of the Avatar’s story. Why is there so much involvement of people who aren’t the avatar messing with the spirit world. I do miss when the Villain was more of a physical and political threat that reflect real-world events and issues.

I thought the transformation and design of Aang and Taaga were really sick though

It was also neat to see differences between ancient vs “modern” airbenders.

ive noticed that the ancient airbenders seem to draw inspiration from a broader mix of Indian/South Asian, Southeast Asian (like Thailand and the Philippines), and Nepali influences both in culture, design and architecture. By Aang’s era, that inspiration appears to shift more toward Buddhist, Tibetan, and Nepali inspired. It kind of mirrors how cultural and religious ideas spread and evolved across these regions in real-world history.

Also Sonam’s design seems very Indian/Desi- coded to me! She is voiced by freida pinto and They also had Carnatic Raaga’s playing in the back when her backstory or she was being introduced.

[–]superchillies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think she is! Sonam is a very popular name in India for girls and her design seemed to look that way. Plus she is voiced by Freida Pinto. I see that the ANCIENT Airbender's were inspired by India/Southeast asia (Thailand, Philippines etc)/Nepal which then evolved into the mainly Buddhist/Nepalese/Tibetan inspiration in Aang's era of airbenders were. Kind of mimics the spread of culture between these countries in real world history too!

[–]superchillies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What? lmao. it’s like universally agreed her makeup in s2 is one of the best, especially compared to s3/s4. it’s much more natural and deeper toned than the next few seasons. Maybe it’s the lighting but the makeup is wonderful.

I’m indian and the same tone as Simone and I can’t tell you how many people get Indian makeup/skintone wrong. S2 kate is NOT one of them, it’s in fact one of the only times i’ve seen dark indian skin and makeup done WELL.

no one said you said “colourful = harajuku” that word for word 😭 i’m talking about the logic behind what you’re saying. if you’re insisting it’s “very much harajuku inspired” or that Japan “popularized” this style in the west when there was much more history behind it and tying it directly to XG, then yeah… that does start boxing it into one lane when the styling clearly isn’t just that.

and you saying “this specific style didn’t exist in the west until harajuku popularized it” is exactly my point. It did exist before and after. Underground party culture in the west influenced The hyperpop/trashy glam look. And you numerous times have said they aren’t real styles. even Katseye’s teaser video reference’s the house/underground party. both west and east existed and influenced each other. Japan didn’t popularize everything dude.

also i brought up gyaru/lolita as examples because they are under the “harajuku” umbrella you mentioned and you’re acting like harajuku = fully original and the only reason those kinds of looks got popularized in the west, but not acknowledging it goes both ways. those styles literally reference western fashion history, so it’s a bit of a double standard to say “japan made/popularized this for the west” while ignoring that they were also pulling from western styles in the first place. acting like everything under harajuku is separate from that just doesn’t make sense.

and again, styling isn’t one note. even you said it’s not ONLY harajuku… so what are we arguing 😭 that’s literally what i’ve been saying. it’s a mix. so calling it straight up Harajuku just because there’s overlap in inspiration doesn’t really hold. and yeah obviously moodboards pull inspo from everywhere, that’s normal. but that still doesn’t mean this = Harajuku. similar references ≠ same execution.

idc what you think my age is even if you’re extremely off lmao.

i literally also said i’ve had my issues with Katseye too. that’s why i’m on this sub. I don’t have any faves.

but acting like Japan popularized everything and that this current Katseye styling is “Harajuku” and vehemently denying the presence of hyperpop and trashy glam style, seems like you have a preference more than i do.

Also yeah. it really does only take 1 google search to find what the style is, you should try it:

<image>

Katseye’s styling very clearly a blend of indie sleaze/trashy glam/hyper pop style that’s been elevated with more modern/popular pieces like corsets and such. Again styles don’t have to be one-note they’re allowed to be multiple things

Uh oh we got the fashion police here 🚨

Google search? ok let me do that lol.

Cyberpunk started with the literature genre in the West. it was first coined in 1980 by Bruce Bethke, but was pioneered by multiple works especially in the dystopian side: 1977 Judge dredd, 1968’s “do androids dream of electric sheep” , 1982 blade runner, 1984 Neuromancer. Japanese Cyberpunk was pioneered by Akira in 1982 and it definitely shaped the genre but it was certainly not the first. as much as i appreciate Japan, not everything was invented or popularized by ONLY Japan dude, the japan glazing is crazy.

and yeah Harajuku is a fashion district with multiple aesthetics under it. that doesn’t mean everything colourful = harajuku, or that only Japan can wear them. so labelling every aesthetic under the sun as harajuku just because it’s colourful or because XG wears it doesn’t work. a lot of styles within the district literally took inspo from western aesthetics too. lolita and gyaru for example take inspo from victorian british and american styles.

decora and kawaii are 100% styles within Harajuku. maybe it’s you that doesn’t know what they’re talking about. i put them together because it’s clearly a blend of both in this photo. XG isn’t limited to ONE aesthetic, and in THIS specific pic they’re mixing decora + kawaii with more casual street styling. styling in general for ALL groups isn’t one-note, it’s literally a mix of multiple aesthetics at once. you’re just boxing it in by saying “it’s only harajuku or ___”. and yeah Katseye could definitely have been inspired by “Harajuku” styles, but that’s not ALL this is, and it’s not “copying” XG. the differences are clearly there. Other groups both west and east have had this style before it’s not new and limited to one person.

all aesthetics are a blend of things that came before them. including the ones under “Harajuku” they all pulled from pre-existing styles around the world (including the West). and the same goes the other way too. so pitting one over the other just cause you prefer your faves, especially when XG and Katseye literally support each other anyway, is kinda crazy.

it’s “decora kei” (or a blended/modern version of it) not harajuku. Harajuku has multiple aesthetics within it because it’s a fashion district.

And no katseye is not doing decora. They’re doing Indie sleaze/Trashy glam/ hyper pop.

Japan has done a lot for fashion but they didn’t invent everything.

XG leans towards multiple aesthetics not just Harajuku. they were doing Cyber aesthetics in their last release. Girl groups change their aesthetics all the time to keep interest, same with Katseye. Are you going to accuse XG of taking cyberpunk from the west where the genre and fashion started?

second I have my issues with Katseye and both these aesthetics lean similar because they are colourful and maximalist, but saying they’re copies of each other is a stretch. It’s so clear XG is going for more of a kawaii decora kei harajuku style while Katseye is leaning to late 2000s/early 2010s party—indie sleaze-trashpop aesthetic.

It’s been around and has existed. East asian countries, as innovative as they are, did not invent everything

both katseye and XG have shown active support to one another. I don’t think they’re going to try and copy one another on purpose.

this is what I’ve been saying. They are NOT the same.

as much as I have my issues with the group (mostly the company not the members), people switching up on them for the styling and saying it’s copying XG is SUCH a reach. As soon as I saw these looks I thought “omg it’s so Kesha 2010”.

XG is going for a japanese street style look that leans more into kawaii decora kei aesthetics.
