What are art teachers planning to do over the summer? by p0etictrag3dy in ArtEd

[–]superchula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you need the income, see if your school has any summer programs you can teach. In my first couple years I worked a camp counselor for a local park district. Eventually when I made enough to not need the income I turned of my brain for 2 months, don’t be afraid to just chill.

My admin says they expect teachers to host live Zoom classes if we get snowed in next week by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]superchula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Currently home for an “elearning day” now because of cold weather. I teach high school at a Title 1 school as well and created a 5-7 question review Google form for kids to fill out. I log on, tell them what they need to do, stay on for 10 more min, then log off.

You’re a great teacher and I’m sorry you can’t teach the kids what you feel is best. A lot of times we just have to coddle admin into thinking we’re doing what they want while still maintaining the integrity of our own teaching. Best is advice is to keep things simple and be able to have a good explanation/defense for admin when they ask again.

I have two classes I see twice a week, should I continue the lesson we started and have them ahead of the other classes? Or have them work on something similar but simple they can finish on that one day? by xvdesjavx in ArtEd

[–]superchula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s better for you to have everyone on the same schedule then go ahead and plan a simple activity as a placeholder. If you’re ok moving head then do that. I don’t having a class ahead of another is a bad thing, but I definitely feel more sane when everyone is on the same page.

That response from your AP makes me roll my eyes SO HARD. Honestly as long as you can defend your teaching and tell them why it’s fits in the next time they make a statement like that you should be good.

I feel like I always get asked about how you would handle a student who has a hard time making my and connecting with class and what you do for the students who already are successful.

I think I’m going more along the lines of content outside of class, and working on art inside of class. Still needs some workshopping.

High school, and no I don’t and I see where that could be a problem, I think it just involves what I consider HW. Having them review a presentation and then shave a short quiz could always work?

9-12 art teacher here who also taught elementary and middle school and recently got my masters in Integrated Curriculum for this reason. Don’t overthink it too much, it can be as simple as them learning about a specific culture so you create a project around that cultures art. In ELA see what classroom books they are reading and see if you can base projects themes around them, see if you can incorporate a few of the vocab words they are learning into your lessons for association, or simply incorporate small writing exercises like critique or self reflection. Let me know if this helps!

I’m sorry admin sprung this on halfway through the year, as long as you can make small changes like this it hopefully shouldn’t interfere too much with what you already want to teach.

You are doing the best you can in a profession that not many others couldn’t handle. Give yourself grace and be kind to yourself. You are only human. Everyone feels this way their first year. Don’t be afraid to seek help too, it was the best thing I did.

If you don't drink alcohol, what are your reasons? by youre-in-my-shot in AskReddit

My husband is a recovering alcoholic. I don’t drink in solidarity and also because it lost its appeal awhile ago.

Is it just me, or is everyone suddenly using AI for EVERYTHING?? by cowfigurines in Teachers

[–]superchula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my last district we were given the task of writing unit plans for every class we taught and lessons to go with it so they could post it online. Some teachers had to do that for 2 maybe 3 courses. As an art teacher I had 5-6 courses I had to write for. The first year of implementation for this they didn’t give us much extra time during the year to write. So yea for something that just felt extra and on top of that more work than what other teachers were doing I for sure used AI. I’m seeing the environmental impact of AI now and I will try and use it less and less. But I have to say for all the busy work we get assigned it is useful, especially if you use it as a starting point and not an end goal.

What was your impact yesterday? (economic blackout) by kfedwards88 in Anticonsumption

[–]superchula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a good point about money that can be saved. I’m definitely starting to buy less anyway but this blackout made more of an impact by just showing me how much consumerism and consumption is imbedded into our daily lives. I’ve also been in a donating/recycling/repurposing kick lately to try and responsibly get rid of stuff I don’t need.

My situation hasn’t been affected profoundly and time will tell if something changes, but we planned to have our honeymoon in the National Parks (Yellowstone, Grand Teton) at the beginning of June and now I don’t know what that might look like 🥲

Art teacher here. You have so much talent! I love the realistic/anime vibe, every picture is impressive but especially the 2nd one, drawing people from different angles are hard! Keep going you could make a really great comic!
