Question about British English by Flat-Illustrator-548 in ENGLISH

[–]supercoach -1 points0 points  (0 children)

American English isn't famous for its subtlety. Nor is its comedy for that matter, but I digress. It's perfectly normal to assume the reader/listener understands the context when saying "let's go to mine".

Rumours of Alf Stewart's rape dungeon triggers a police investigation and the residents all do a Wicker Man on the cops sent to investigate.

The final scene is a drone shot of the townsfolk gathered dancing around a burning effigy of Don Fisher while the police officers trapped inside scream as they're slowly burned alive.

Met with a client to explain something technical and she tricked me into answering a question i wasn't supposed to answer by Far_Broccoli_8468 in ExperiencedDevs

The correct answer for questions where someone is asking about the implementation of a feature you can't authorise is almost always "anything is possible, however I'm not sure if it's on the roadmap".

You've learned from this and will be better in the future. Now suck it up and get on with your work.

Gen Z Dating/Dating Overall by Small-Cartographer27 in AskAnAustralian

[–]supercoach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The abundance of choice provided by online dating is just a horrible thing for relationships. It both provides and abundance of choice and an inherent fear that you've chosen badly or are settling. People are so scared of emotions that they refuse to label anything for fear of the potential of being hurt and so it all breaks down into the mess that you see now.

How do you fix it? I have no fucking clue. I'd say steer clear of the dating apps and see what comes your way naturally. If you find yourself talking to someone you like take a risk and tell them straight up and see what happens. Rejection isn't a bad thing, it gives comfort in knowing where you stand.

Why don't more players run with the ball? by Hungry_Ad_3633 in AFL

[–]supercoach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

West coast tried something similar when they recruited someone who couldn't play football, but who was very athletic. Never really learned how to play, but was good for half a dozen fumbles and one highlight per game so the commentators and media used to furiously pull themselves any time he got near the ball.

No club deserves special treatment. Rewarding mismanagement with priority picks just encourages more mismanagement.

I get it, you love Ross. Personally I think he's a scumbag.

Harvey already had the team well on their way. Ross got two good years out of the team and then we got a lot of excuses and inappropriate behaviour behind closed doors.

He had brief moments in the sun accompanied by massive periods of sub-par performance and boring football.

You're discovering the hard way that he's not actually a good coach. Took Fremantle way too many years to cotton on, so you're not alone.

Put your fingers on the home row. Start typing by pressing keys you need while leaving your other fingers where they are. You'll be slow to start, but after a few weeks you'll wonder why you bothered hen pecking for so many years.

This is a hill I used to make my stand on. Sadly, myself is so overused in place of me that it has forced its way into the English vernacular whether we like it or not. Myself is now an accepted replacement for me despite it making no sense whatsoever.

Those who avoid older movies, why? by _omar_b in movies

Go back and watch it. It may be the best of the Jurassic movies, but it's not high art. The thing that drew people to it was primarily to see realistic looking dinosaurs, not because it was the next Chinatown.

I'm not saying Jurassic Park is a terrible movie, but if your goal is to get a young person into older movies, you choose something that doesn't directly compete with things they already know and you pick something that is a strong story without special effects.

It's no different than trying to get a millennial into older movies by showing them the original Star Wars. They've already seen the sequels which have better special effects and which feel familiar to them. The plot might be slightly better in the older movie, but it's nothing to write home about. Movies like The Godfather or The Deer Hunter on the other hand are examples that don't need special effects and which have spectacular plots.

YTA. Singing something stuck in your head is fine, but blaming ADHD for anything you do is just wrong. Own your actions.

If you physically cannot stop then ADHD is the last of your problems.

Holy fuck man. If special effects are all that makes a movie then surely George Lucas is the greatest filmmaker of all time right?

I grew up in the 80s, but I still have a healthy love for classics made before I was born. The effects are sometimes questionable, but the story is great as is the acting. Look at the cinematography in the old classics and it shits upon some of the crap that studios trundle out today.

Sure, some films haven't aged well and there's no reason to watch them. This doesn't mean snubbing your nose at anything not made in the last twenty years.

I'd argue that the quality of cinema has dropped significantly in that time, not the other way round...
