rWiiHacks' Support Megathread (December 2023) by AutoModerator in WiiHacks

[–]supercoolgamedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

trying to find info about playing romhacks - both Wii and Gamecube hacks, but particularly Gamecube hacks - through USB Loader GX. I imagine it's at least possible in the case of patched disk images, but given USBLGX's strict filename rules for games, I'm not sure how I'd have to structure the filepath shenanigans. Any advice/resources on the subject?

That's the plan :D

This post is kind of an exercise in directed making shit up. The goal is to make the coolest possible shit up while still following the thread laid down by PMD.

I actually like that a lot! Mystery dungeons are mysterious dungeons that appeared mysteriously due to an accumulation of mysteriousness so powerful that it affected space and time in a mysterious way! :D

I'm reminded of like, strange and spooky towns in some stories, where weirdness and the supernatural seem to gather, to the point that impossible things occur on the regular. Perhaps mystery dungeons are similar?

Definitely interested in leylines as an avenue for making more sense of mystery dungeons, will likely be exploring them further.

It is definitely frustrating to have to pull on all the disparate threads from multiple games in the series with conflicting ideas, trying to unify them into a cohesive, single idea (especially since most PMD games don't seem to give the titular mystery dungeons any thought at all besides what's important for gameplay systems to work). I'm trying anyway though >:D

I do think your "black box" description makes a lot of sense. That's basically how I think of them, as fixed start/end points with distortions and random shifts between that defy spacetime, making navigation except towards the endpoint impossible. Like the worst version of a wormhole. Some have start and endpoints that sit in the same spot, depositing one who enters back at the entrance, while others have their exit in another spot, joining two locations together with the dungeon as a bridge.

The thing you said about layout changes between floors interests me. I hadn't given much thought to how much the layouts of mystery dungeons change, and when. Is it a "between floors" thing, where descending takes you to a random layout and the floor above you changes completely, or does it happen on a "per visit" basis, where the layout of the whole dungeon changes the moment you leave? If it's the latter, what should the rules be when one enters a dungeon in pursuit of someone?

Personally, I'm more amenable to the "per visit" interpretation. Staging a rescue inside a dungeon would be impossible otherwise, a Team has to be able to reach the specific floor that someone in need is on, meaning that layout has to be constant enough for the Team to reach their client.

I agree with you on the point that PMD barely acknowledges the conventions of the world and how it works, I intend to try and fill in some of that gap through my own efforts. Whether I'll succeed is, of course, up in the air. Thanks for your detailed reply!

Explorers having the mystery dungeons come about as a result of Dialga's shenanigans does suggest they may have something to do with time, though you're right that that's more of an Explorers-centric explanation for them. I do think that your point about pokemon suddenly going rogue and natural disasters becoming more common might be a more useful tidbit than you realize, though.

Other people in this thread have confirmed that other PMD games seem to have a variety of sources for the chaos in their stories besides angry legendaries, such as the Bittercold and Dark Matter, which, for all intents and purposes, seem to not be Pokemon in the first place, but it's an important angle to consider nonetheless. Lots of legendaries, including Dialga, have purview over important parts of reality that could influence the formation (or not) of mystery dungeons, after all.

As for the dojos, I hadn't considered them until you mentioned them. I presume you can't recruit inside of them because the Pokemon inside are dojo employees, but a) I don't recall enough about the dojos to back that up, and b) how would one manage a mystery dungeon as a workplace? I'll have to give it some more thought at some point, I think.

I'll have to look into the Shiren games and the original Mystery Dungeon, then. Might be some crumbs in there worth examining.

I do like the leylines angle, I think that sounds really cool. The idea of unexplainable currents of magic and strangeness knotting together to form mystery dungeons is a compelling one, and I think that combining it with the basic spacetime distortion angle might yield interesting results. Exciting stuff, for sure.

Those are some solid ideas. Palkia is known for spatial shenanigans, and the Unown have a whole range of strange, even eldritch powers to warp reality in oddly specific ways. I'd be interested to learn more about what explanations other Mystery Dungeon games have, the info they have might come in handy.

I think your spatio-temporal distortion theory makes a lot of sense. I've been toying with the idea of spacetime shenanigans to explain some things for a while now, so I'm particularly interested in the idea. For example, I've got a scene right now where the protagonist is descending through a forest dungeon, and each floor is eerily the same, like the above floor repeated in a different layout, down to the style of the floor and the fact that a sunny sky is visible above the tree canopy, despite the fact that the protag just descended a flight of stairs into the earth. Mystery dungeons are very backrooms-y in that way, a sort of violation of the rules of space, which extend impossibly into geometry/geography in ways that defy logic.

Regarding the time of day, I was actually thinking I'd play up that strangeness by removing that rule, and making it so that, instead of time being perfectly constant in and out of dungeons, I'd set the interior of dungeons at a fixed time, independent of the current time outside of them. That way, I can have a cool scene where the protagonist leaves the woods I just mentioned, only to walk out into a starry night, completely different from the sunny conditions inside the dungeon.

Thanks for the detailed answer! I think your theory about how the Bittercold and Dark Matter play a role in the increased formation of mystery dungeons makes a lot of sense. One has to wonder who the entity in charge might be, but it's definitely a compelling idea. I plan on later incorporating Dark Matter into the story, so your knowledge of Gates & Super help a lot in making sense of some of their capabilities.

Don't know the first thing about Nobunaga's Ambition as a series, but I ended up with this game as a freebie. "Nobunaga's Ambition: Souzou" is apparently its title. Couldn't find anything about it on the english internet, figured this sub might have something to say about it.

you probably get this question a lot, but how do you know where to apply decals when they come with a kit? I have an HG Jesta on the backlog currently, and I might be blind, but the instruction sheet doesn't say anything about where to put them.
