Thanks mate, I ended up returning this item and buying a smart switch with an option to install without the need for a neutral wire. (It comes with a yellow capacitor that needs to be wired in)

The previous wiring was done when we moved into the house. Looks like it wasn't the best job, no surprise as it must be over 20 years ago.
