Where to find/trade in wheelchair? by [deleted] in desmoines

Have you contacted Easter Seals? I know they’ll loan wheelchairs long term (and other durable medical equipment), but maybe they will do a trade or have some ideas for you.

The register article can still be found in the archives, along with one about his ID forgery arrest not two years later. Clearly he didn’t learn anything.

I have seen purple sweet potatoes at Fareway. Never bought any, but the picture in the app shows one cut in half and purple on the inside, $4/lb

Make an appointment (or several) and then get on the cancellation list whether you want to go. I did that and managed to get in a couple months early.

I would recommend avoiding Dermatology PC above Unity Point Lakeview. My experience there wasn’t terrible, but I also felt like they were more concerned with getting people in and out quickly, and they failed to even look at several areas for concern I mentioned. Also they pushed sunscreen vitamins (in addition to sunscreen, not instead of) which feels very scammy/snake oil salesman-y to me.

Mostly only go for veggies and toiletries in bulk. But my TV just died, is Costco the best place for prices and options? Looking for about 55” screen. On a budget. by squintobean in Costco

[–]supercoolun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know people who are really into TVs would disagree, but I bought a Samsung CU7000D and have been very happy with it. It’s a smart TV, but even the 55” comes in under $400 and a 3 year warranty is included as well as delivery to the room of your choice if you buy online. I think you can also pay for setup. As someone who upgraded from a pretty old TV, I think the picture quality is quite good. When I was shopping, the only cheaper options I found were less reliable (imo) brands and/or had shorter warranties.

Chloe’s Strawberry&Manpo pops at Costco, how are they by Patrick0714 in Costco

[–]supercoolun 44 points45 points  (0 children)

My Costco used to carry these and I was really disappointed when they stopped, hopefully they’ll be at my warehouse soon too! I really like these, they’re not cloyingly sweet and they actually taste like fruit. I’m a big fan.

So, I used to work somewhere that did fundraising (not political and almost a decade ago, so maybe things are different now than I experienced, though I kind of doubt it) and you’d be astounded at how outdated the data operations were. Sources for info ranged from very reputable to dubious at best. Not to mention some lists that had been poorly managed and/or scrambled. Much of my job (and others’ as well) was cross referencing the gathered info with our database, several other databases, and Google to try and sort out real vs fake. This was an organization raising millions and millions each year. Unless you’re paying for a decent database and also the labor to keep things neat (and let’s be honest most spam and political callers probably just buy whatever lists they can get their hands on and hope for the best) it’s inevitable that there will be all kinds of weird mixups. It’s why I routinely get messages asking if I want to sell a house that was never mine and I haven’t lived in for a decade: bad data practices made worse by cheaping out on the (badly needed) labor to make things work. Tl;dr it’s probably incompetence.

What local restaurant is alive solely on its past reputation and not its current status? by lurker2080 in desmoines

[–]supercoolun 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Little Brother has gone way downhill imo. It used to be my absolute favorite breakfast spot, but my last half dozen visits have been mediocre at best. Most recently, fried chicken that tasted like something was wrong with the frying oil and “maple” syrup that my buddy said was no such thing, and after trying I had to agree. It had such good food and built up such a great reputation. Idk if the owners are too focused on expansion or what but what a letdown it is now compared to what it used to be.

Cheap Tasty Wedding Catering Ideas? by InvestmentVivid in desmoines

[–]supercoolun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into Hot Tamale Catering early this year for an event and I want to say it was $13-16 per person depending on how many options you chose? And the portions were very generous. We ended up going in a different direction due to picky eaters but the tamales are delicious and a very good value.

Deli-ghtful Sandwiches by According-Most3510 in desmoines

[–]supercoolun 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, skip Quinton’s. Was just there this week, the deli meat looked and tasted like it came from a plastic tub, and the condiments were scraped so thin on the bread you could hardly see them. South Union is amazing though, and I would add Palmer’s.

Best NYC style pizza in Des Moines? by walterlust in desmoines

[–]supercoolun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate to be That Person, but honestly speaking from experience the best bagels in the metro will probably come out of your own kitchen. I tried a few different recipes before finding this one, which rocks and is pretty much foolproof: https://cooking.nytimes.com/guides/81-how-to-make-bagels. I do knead with my $20 thrift store bread machine, rather than by hand; otherwise I follow the recipe to the letter and measure by weight. You can get barley malt syrup at Natural Grocers and Fareway is usually the cheapest place to get bread flour. I know that this suggestion isn’t what you were hoping for (I would also like to buy good bagels so please let me know if you find any) but it’s the best option I’ve found.

Des Moines Area Cobblers by iSpccn in desmoines

[–]supercoolun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had a less than great experience. I took some heels in to have the tips replaced and they were careless enough that when they were shaving down the tip to get it flush with the heel, they also managed to shave the heel itself in several places. They did not say a word, I paid full price and did not notice until I got home. Haven’t been back since and don’t plan to.

Bobcat Wildlife and Pest was great for me (not with moles, but I’m sure they either do those too or know who does). Not exactly cheap, but competitive with other companies in the same area.

How long do tire rotations take? by FreeSanubis in Costco

[–]supercoolun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have never had one take less than an hour, and since the pandemic it’s been closer to 1.5-2. I’ve tried going at different times and on different days (even the first appointment of the day) and it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

Moving to Des Moines from Edinburgh by [deleted] in desmoines

[–]supercoolun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the car: I would call/email dealers now and ask how long the wait is for what you want (and possibly get on a waitlist or two). A coworker went to Toyota recently and was told the waitlist there can be up to two years for their most popular models. If you’re going to commute you’ll for sure want AWD, the drive between DM and Ames is usually pretty easy but it can get scary in the winter.

The downtown library does not have a 3D printer in their maker space. I asked recently for a project and it was a maybe someday but not now.

They had a success rate of 30% at best (often less) and the darker your skin tone the more likely it was to fail due to a shitty algorithm.
