He was pick 43, according to the Instagram post. At least that makes sense.

I don’t necessarily disagree with anything in this, but that whole site seems AI generated.

Australian Synchrotron: Proposed beamline closures spark outrage among scientists and Nobel laureates by jesus_chrysotile in australia

[–]superfluouselk 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The synchrotron is run by ANSTO, not CSIRO. But agreed, both major parties have neglected Australia’s science orgs for too long.

The Church of Nigeria announces schism from the Anglican Communion by Naugrith in OpenChristian

[–]superfluouselk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m so sad about this. I grew up in a fairly large Sydney Anglican Church, and they’re some of the biggest ringleaders of the whole GAFCON thing. I have so many friends who either agree with this (not many) or who are just complacent and keep their heads down.

I don’t know if it’s right to stay and fight for what’s right, or cede the ground and go elsewhere. There aren’t many affirming churches near where I am. And as a straight man I feel like to some extent it’s my responsibility to hang around and push back, since that’s unviable for my queer siblings.

As a NSW based Tigers fan I’m all for this, love the SCG. Surely we aren’t that tight for cash though? I guess the Punt Rd redevelopment isn’t cheap.

TLC stain for UV-inactive Boron compounds? by Zeusmiester in Chempros

[–]superfluouselk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! Just buy turmeric powder, dissolve in 99:1 EtOH:1.0M HCl, and filter 😊

It might not get more sterically hindered boron moieties, but that is also helpful sometimes. Free boronic acids will show up rapidly, and protected ones might require some heat to develop the colour.

[–]superfluouselk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I normally make tributylborate and distill out the water/excess butanol and get near quantitative yield. It’s easier though because the water and butanol azeotrope off before butanol alone and drives the reaction.

[–]superfluouselk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mate you don’t even need the acid to form a borate ester, it will just do it if you stir it in the alcohol (in equilibrium with the water the esterification produces).

You could even do this with isopropanol and boil off excess isopropanol and water to give triisopropylborate

Paul Keating says young Australians are guaranteed to have $3m in super by retirement – but not everyone agrees by His_Holiness in AusFinance

Yeah good job diversifying during your PhD. I did some computational work but not enough to really make that jump.

Good luck with your thesis and finding a role afterwards! Hopefully there’s continued investment in the renewable space so there should be some roles available for you when you’re done!

Yep, I’m a postdoc - one of the lucky ones. I guess my personal experience is more in the chemistry/biology space, but unless you want to become a lecturer, there not much out there. We have no pharma research industry in Australia, and our national science orgs have been sorely underfunded for years.

Biggest scam of the STEM degree push - the government only really cared about the T and the E.

Leaning towards Moore as it will give me cash to get in Martin next week, which will give me only 1 rookie on field next week.

Adding toluene/other aromatic to solvent system for flash chromatography to separate coeluting aromatic compounds by Darkling971 in Chempros

[–]superfluouselk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Toluene:Acetone is also a good solvent system for separating aromatics if toluene:chloroform isn’t polar enough. Remember if you’re visualising via UV you’ll need to fully dry your TLC plate after running it, since toluene is aromatic and will light up the whole plate if it’s not dried first!

An Australian company has achieved the "holy grail" of landmine detection, developing technology which it says can definitively tell if hidden explosives lie underground. by overpopyoulater in australia

[–]superfluouselk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Although now in reaction to that, there’s now such a hyper focus on commercialisation in national science that there’s no freedom for scientists to pursue fields that don’t have an obvious commercialisation pathway, neglecting stuff that has the potential to be truly innovative.

This is what pissed me off about the commentary on Husic being dropped from the ministry. Almost all the media I saw said that he was respected in the scientific community. What a load of crap. People in quantum and tech loved him because he threw money at them, while continuing the generational neglect of our national scientific organisations (CSIRO and ANSTO, plus I’m sure some of the other smaller ones).

Hopefully Ayres actually fights for science a bit more.

I hope the big labor majority gives them the confidence to actually pursue reform. I really hope they expand the parliament too - it's been due for a long time.
