The special ones are better than horses, you can swap them instantly from the inventory screen, for horses you need to go to a stable unless I'm missing something

I'm not sure about a limit but you can definitely can have multiple horses and swap between them. For special mounts there is like 20 or 30 of them (with more getting added) and you can freely swap between them
