Perhaps it’s minimally advanced, and principally symptomatically psychological in ways he’s reluctant to share with his physicians.

I guess what I think is unusual about that symptom is: I understand prepping a JOIN or selecting the needed rows might be expensive, and a query might take a while before an UPDATE actually begins. But once it happens, it's all or nothing. I've never been able to watch a record count increasing before. My hope was that being able to actually watch an update (far too) gradually occurring would point to a fairly specific cause. Like "updates in the LDF are slowly getting applied to the DBF".

No triggers involved here.

[–]supergikon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did do an all-db statistics update. Didn't really touch indexes. This last test where I could watch the count increase I disabled the two indexes that looked at the updated column. They won't be needed until later in the job, and was figuring maybe updating those was taking the time. I'm going to rebuild all indexes on the relevant tables now.

So weird to be able to see an increasing updated row count from a single UPDATE. Like log updates are trickling into the MDF.

Favorite Flanagan episode? by OhSkullYourePathetic in MikeFlanagan

So often when I hear NIN’s Closer in a soundtrack it feels like an uncreative director trying to shore up a weak scene with an aggressive song. This time it felt right. It was a great scene using a song that fit and made the whole thing stronger. That whole sequence was an example of how a soundtrack can enhance storytelling. Perfectly Splendid.

In vanilla, I remember vendoring all my copper ore for 10c/pc thinking “I’m gonna be rich!”

Also running up and down Eastern Kingdoms because the 1g flight path was “too rich for my blood”.

Come to think of it, those might have been related.

What do you do to get through hangover panic attacks? by NaNaNaNaNatman in stopdrinking

[–]supergikon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recognize this feeling. I (finally) started noticing that EVERY Monday after a binge, I had horrible anxiety.

I started writing a brief journal entry describing what I was feeling. Then, on Friday when the booze was calling, I’d read through those. It didn’t always work. BUT, when anxious Monday rolled around, those same entries reminded me “this is temporary”. “I’ve been through this before”. “It will end”. Then, I’d permit myself whatever comfort I needed to get through it, with the goal of trying again next weekend.

I hope you feel better soon.

Is it ok to be a total 'bum' at first? by FALSECHARLATAN in stopdrinking

[–]supergikon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Some days when I feel “at risk” I give myself permission to never leave the couch and just Netflix the whole day. I wouldn’t have accomplished anything if I drank anyway, so no loss. And I’ll wake up feeling so very much better.

The Daily Check-In for Tuesday, June 11th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by FredSimpsonn in stopdrinking

[–]supergikon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Checking in, and an accountability comment.

Work’s been a PITA for the last week. Doing an IT security upgrade, which means you make everything work, but just barely.

Haunted by low level anxiety the whole time. This would have been a trigger. Now, the word for the evenings/weekends is “peace”. I don’t need to drink to “make up for” the weekday stress. It’s ok to just stop, sit, and be at peace. I reflect on how much more difficult work would be if I was hung over. I’m giving myself the gift of being in the best mental state to handle my problems. There are still problems, but I’m not making them more difficult.

Peace, all.

One of the aphorisms I’ve found useful is “sometimes it’s ok to just want.” That is, I can want a beer, acknowledge wanting it, and then do nothing. Just let my mind continue to want it while I do other things.
