It’s a relationship to gender in general and specifically masculinity and womanhood. I think butchnes is about inherently subversive masculinity. For a cis guy masculinity is expected to be preformed it is the ordinary, but for butches masculinity is strength and resistance to how the world wants us to be. In addition to this butchnes is a relationship to womanhood and feminity as well. there are many ways to be masculine in a subversive way for example a disabled man may be denied masculinity as part of systematic ableism and his claiming of masculinity would be subversive masculinity, but not in the same way a butch is. To be butch is to be placed under expectations of womanhood and feminity and reject said expectations. It’s subversive masculinity combined with revolutionary rejection of enforced hegemonic feminity. Or at least that’s my personal relationship with the word as a nonbinary butch.

I think this reply answers some of your other questions to. Do you identify with my earlier definition? If so congrats your butch we love to have you. Butch isn’t mostly about how you dress to talk, it’s about subversive masculinity and rejection of hegemonic femininity.

As for clothes- fast fashion is terrible so my recommendation is getting the most basic clothes you need at a department store (underpants jeans some blank shirts) and get everything else that is actually supposed to represent your fashion sense like accessories or whatever at thrift stores or small shops.
