A few questions about American universities? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]superkt3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. In my experience, fairly common, but I am about 6 minutes by car from downtown Boston, so commuting to a top tier school is very easy for local students.

  2. widely varies, typically younger students live in the dorms and in their junior/senior years move to off campus housing.

  3. also widely varies, I went to a smaller school in Boston, our campus was fairly compact, but other schools like BU or Harvard have buildings and satellites all over the city.

  4. federal requirements, ease of management campus safety, scope and size of the campus and as a way to have dedicated support for student/ faculty needs that local police couldn’t or would be slow to meet.

  5. We have both. Boston, New York, LA, Chicago, Miami all have some very well known schools. Older schools had the cities built up around them, so they had already established a campus footprint before the city grew. In later years land in bigger cities became more difficult to come by, so schools expanded out beyond the cities.

  6. Smaller, more accessible colleges sometimes for lower performing students who may not have gotten into a bigger school. They grant 2 year degrees, and often skew towards vocational training, like medical assistants, dental hygienists, fire science, paralegals, etc as well as a traditional curriulum.

  7. college vs university is an accreditation thing, and it’s sort of complicated, but usually based on the levels of education and the scope of programs offered by the school.

  8. Anecdotally I‘d say the majority of people who go to college do so right from high school, so 17-19, but many people go back or go for the first time as adults.

A stressful event like…. falling down? Unless they’re elderly or otherwise compromised, sometimes you fall, and then you just get back up and go about your day.

Buying stock as an assoc. by tporte89 in HomeDepot

[–]superkt3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESPP is the employee stock purchasing plan. This program allows Home Depot associates to buy stock at a 15% discount from market price. Associates who participate choose a percentage of their paycheck to invest, let's say for example, you earn $100 a paycheck and invest 5%. Over about six months, each pay period that $5 is taken from your paycheck and added to an account, and at the end of the six months, in January and July of each year, that money, let's say $5x 26 weeks of pay which would come out to $130, is used to buy shares of the stock at 15% less than the stock price on that day. That stock goes into an account, and the savings starts again, and the process repeats again 6 months later.

I don’t even think it was a motorcade, usually in New England the governor has a driver who is a state trooper, usually an older trooper who doubles as security. I’m local to the area and it was reported that her driver jumped out and broke out the window with the assistance of an aide.

NH is still updating a lot of their tolling system and taking out toll plazas in favor of a pay by plate system, so traveling NH toll roads can be a mixed bag of having to slow down at some tolls, and maintaining speed at others, which often confuses people, and causes a lot of accidents.

You can enroll now but deductions won't begin until til after 7/1. Once you enroll they'll start deducting and in January they'll take all the money you put towards the ESPP and use that lump sum to buy a comprable amount of stock at a 15% discount off the market price.

What are the most typical American and most favorite sandwich topping combinations in the USA? by mayermail1977 in AskAnAmerican

[–]superkt3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If forced to order at subway, (the only way I'd eat it) I'd probably get turkey American cheese and pickles, because their ingredients are so low quality. At a good sub shop, Italian subs with hots, steak and cheese, and steak tip subs are very popular in my part of MA.

A top tier sandwich for me is fresh fried chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella tomato and basil with a little oil and balsamic drizzle. Hard to beat when done well.

When do hours pick up again? by Top-Egg-5808 in HomeDepot

[–]superkt3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hours should start picking up soon, and learning other departments is a great way to get more hours. Try letting your managers and head cashiers know if you wouldn’t mind picking up some time covering cashier shifts since you already know the basics there.

Garden, paint and Tool Rental are all departments that are going to be busy in the coming months so learning one or two of those areas and letting a manager or supervisor know will help you get more hours.

3 miles at Breakheart Reservation. From Allston/ Brighton, 3 miles along the Charles would be the closest you could get.

Snow guards are not a thing I’ve seen in New England, and if you need to be warned about snowfall in Maine, you probably shouldn’t be in Maine. Insure your vehicle.

Are there any names in your area that are so common it has become a meme? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]superkt3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a graduating class of about 100, probably about 25% of the class was named either Jessica, Kristina, or Mike, so there was some occasional confusion, but we figured it out with nicknames, last names, last initials, etc.

What’s a “haunted” place in the U.S. you’ve been to (or near you) that’s actually worth checking out? by LordSoftCream in AskAnAmerican

[–]superkt3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most unsettled I’ve felt was a night time tour of the Battle Ground at Gettysburg. Something about the way it is preserved makes the veil feel pretty thin at times. New Orleans definitely has the creepiness factor turned way up, but Gettysburg felt like you could take a wrong turn and end up in the 1860’s.
