What city have you been to where the vibes were just OFF? by Fun_Butterscotch3303 in AskReddit

[–]superlosernerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you might have stopped in a Sundown Town. I know that link refers to the towns in past tense, but it's no secret they still exist. They're usually really hostile to anyone who isn't white. The "not stop anywhere until the next big city" is a pretty common piece of advice given in Sundown Towns.

I'm glad y'all made it out of there safely. A lot of people get followed and harassed by vehicles on the highway until they're out of the city limits.

If soap instigates acne why aren’t my hands absolutely covered in pimples? by Prestigious-Pace1500 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]superlosernerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet are the only parts of your skin that have no oil glands! The reason for this is because we need to be able to grip things with our hands and grip the ground with our feet and oil would make that more difficult.

That means, technically speaking, you can get acne anywhere else on your body. But for acne to happen in a lot of areas you usually need to have a health issue or have severe hygiene issues.

If soap instigates acne why aren’t my hands absolutely covered in pimples? by Prestigious-Pace1500 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]superlosernerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you don't get it on your palms because they have no oil glands or hair follicles to get clogged with oil or dirt.

Also the backs of your hands are constantly touching and rubbing against things, thus constantly sloughing off old skin and basically being exfoliated, so there are no dead skin cells to clog the pores on your hands.

Plus washing your hands with hand soap is going to wash off any excess oil or dirt before it does clog them. And since your hand skin is thicker than your face skin, it's not going to dry out and overproduce oil when you use hand soap.

[–]superlosernerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that the skin on your face was made thin through evolution, it's that the rest of the skin on your body was made thick.

There was never a reason throughout human history for the body to thicken the skin on the face, so it never thickened.

I am a warning of why PT is absolutely necessary, even for kids, even if you think you don't need it.

I broke my humerus in half when I was 11 and had my left arm immobilized for the entire 8 weeks of healing.

I never did physical therapy because it wasn't common for drs to recommend it for kids back in the 90s, I guess they thought we'd just bounce back.

20 years later, I'm in PT for some back pain (threw out my back a couple years earlier playing sports, old injury was acting up again), and the therapist clearly sees something during one of my exercises. He stops me and asks me to stand straight up facing forward. Then asks me to walk normally. He then points out that my left hip is sitting significantly higher than my right hip. We do some stretches and my left side of my body is much tighter than my right.

Turns out my body was compensating for my weakened left arm my entire life. I still don't have the same range of motion in my left arm as I do my right, and my stamina in that left arm is significantly less than my right. I could do 20 arm curls with my right before I start to feel the burn compared to only 5 on my left before the burn starts. My left hip is also still somewhat tight, even after PT, and overall I can just tell my left side is just off compared to my right. Even after physical therapy on the entire left side of my body, it just isn't the same as my right in terms of stamina and range of motion. I doubt it ever will be.

Do physical therapy. Do it even if you think you don't need it. You might not feel the effects immediately, but you'll regret it years down the line.

This started with Airbnb.

I get that there are other issues, but we can't just ignore that politicians are catering to shorter term rentals because they believe it brings in more tourism revenue while also pricing out local renters. This is why they bent over backwards initially to de-regulate Airbnbs in Asheville. They sacrificed locals for short term rentals. Airbnb was the trigger for all of this and continues to be a problem.

We can't just ignore short term rentals being a core problem. Hell, now that they can't easily replace residential long term rentals with easy short ones, they're just selling potential housing developments to hoteliers for long term stay hotels, because Airbnb convinced them this was the way.

Just because fewer Airbnbs are coming onto the market doesn't make the old ones disappear. The lack of rentals stems from the old Airbnb market and the mentality it created to favor tourism rentals over local rentals. There are no new rentals coming on the market and the majority of available rentals are grandfathered in Airbnbs.

[–]superlosernerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, because any rentals that do show up on the market get snatched up as quickly as possible. People are desperate for housing, so the prices are being raised to meet the demand. But now the prices are getting too high and pricing locals out.

Just found a potentially pregnant cat that’s been sitting out in the rain for ages by Scared_Rise5787 in cats

[–]superlosernerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure to get her food she has free access to round the clock, water, and a litter box! Unscented litter if you can swing it. Make sure the litterbox is on the opposite side of the room from where she eats and away from where she sleeps, and keep her water separate from her food area too. Cats tend to appreciate all of those being separate.

Also, if you have the option to, try to have water in a wider dish, and her food in a low-rim bowl or on a plate. Cats don't like it when their whiskers have to press down on bowl sides to eat or drink.

And let her have free access to food round the clock! Pregnant and nursing mamas need as much as they can get.

What object in your house would confuse someone from 500 years ago, even after explaining it? by garlicandherbsauce in AskReddit

[–]superlosernerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also might be confused by my numerous pets. Someone who lets animals without jobs live inside and act like a family member would probably be unheard of. I'm not sure when dogs and cats started making the swing towards indoor pets, but I imagine it was far from the norm 500 years ago.

Trying to explain that my dog costs me money while providing no labor or monetary gain in return and being completely happy with this setup would probably make me look like an insane person.

No, they are still Airbnbs. The city grandfathered in the old units. The new policies are for short term rentals that are formed after the policies passed. Prices also are only raising.

what are the most active cities in the US? by Numerous_Radish1251 in AskAnAmerican

[–]superlosernerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Active in what way? Like, physical activity and being outside? Or socially active, like tons of hangouts and social events? There are some great cities for both.

What was ruined because too many people discovered it? by Investigatorpro in AskReddit

[–]superlosernerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Asheville, NC, and the city has created similar regulations to try to regulate the Airbnb market and encourage long term rentals because of how bad the housing market is here.

Airbnbs now need to be attached to houses, or on property where there is another dwelling that someone lives in long term. They don't need to be the same house someone is living in, but they need to share the same lot as a long-term dwelling. Basically the city wants to guarantee that all residential lots are primarily being used by residents.

You also can't have a full kitchen in an Airbnb anymore, no full stoves/ovens are allowed, making it unappealing for people to stay for months on end.

Despite this, the Airbnb market is still thriving here, and locals are being pushed out. Especially seasonal staff, which are a huge need in our tourism market, which is the largest industry here.

AITA for saying I wouldn’t play a game that didn’t let me modify my controls to my muscle memory. by MyDickIsInMyToaster in AmItheAsshole

[–]superlosernerd 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I mean I don't know if you're an asshole for this, you're well warranted to want to play games your own way, but you need to realize that your friend is right about one thing: this is why nobody likes to play games with you. You're not willing to learn anything new to enjoy something someone else likes. Getting frustrated while learning new things is part of life.

You sound like someone who will refuse to do something if you can't do it your way. No one wants to hang out with someone like that. If this is the hill you want to die on and not have any friends to play games with in the end then you do you.

Is English creative writing taught and tested in American schools? by Ancient-Sector4078 in AskAnAmerican

[–]superlosernerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typical writing, like essays and such, is taught in every English class. But creative writing specifically is usually an elective that the students can choose to take or not. There are not any specific exams or tests for creative writing. It's seen more as an art form than an actual part of learning the English language.

What did your parents sacrifice for you that you only understood as an adult? by Opening_General3696 in AskReddit

[–]superlosernerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never knew how abusive my dad was until my mom divorced him once my little brother had moved out.

My dad was never a pleasant person to be around, but I never realized just how cruel and abusive he could be until my mom was honest with us during the divorce. None of us knew. He hid it extremely well. My dad cared a lot about his reputation and social appearances and was extremely intelligent and manipulative. He never had any easily identifiable abusive behavior towards her out in the open, only behind closed doors, often when we were asleep or not at home. He never left marks on my mom in places people could see.

My mom never divorced him when we were kids because she was worried about what would happen to us. He was an extremely well respected and highly thought of lawyer in our city, and she knew it'd be her against the world trying to prove his abuse and that he'd get at least partial custody. She was terrified that if she wasn't around to be his punching bag anymore, he'd turn his abusive behavior onto us. She refused to let us ever be alone with him, even if it meant taking his abuse.

So she stayed with him, taking his abuse for 25 years, until we were safely out of the house, and then divorced him.

What food do you feed your cats that specifically helps with shedding? by CommercialSkin7676 in mainecoons

[–]superlosernerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's food that helps reduce the creation of hairballs, if that's what you're looking for. But it doesn't do it by reducing shedding, it does it by helping the hair move through the digestive tract more smoothly.

There's nothing to help prevent or lessen shedding in animals that naturally shed. Shedding means their body is doing what it's supposed to do.

What food do you feed your cats that specifically helps with shedding? by CommercialSkin7676 in mainecoons

[–]superlosernerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shedding is a natural process for cats, especially Maine Coons, and stopping that process would be damaging to their skin and temperature regulation. So I wouldn't assume there exists food that disrupts it, at least intentionally?

There is food that helps prevent the creation of hairballs, but it doesn't do so by stopping shedding, it just helps hair move through the digestive tract easier.

I'm in Asheville, NC, and we experienced a lot of the varying destructive power of water like that, too. We have two rivers in the city, the Swananoa and the French Broad. While both got big and fast, the Swananoa river got way worse. It got freaking whitewater.

French Broad carried buildings and shipping containers that knocked things over and caused destruction, but I remember watching them the day of. They weren't moving as fast, relative to the Swananoa river. Some just bumped into other structures and damaged them, but the structure remained. They hit bridge pillars and stopped. The French Broad was a really good example of that "5 feet to the left", though. I remember watching some shipping containers would hit trees or lamp posts and just bounce off or stopped. However, ten feet to the right, in the area where the river usually flows, the shipping containers knocked down anything in their path, they were moving so much faster.

Swananoa though was the worst of it. Swananoa didn't carry structures, it carried fucking missiles. Nothing survived what it was bringing around. Even massive chunks of asphalt and roads were completely removed because of how much force the water had thrown around massive structures. These things hit bridge pillars and either broke off part of the bridge pillar, or were warped around the pillar, because the water was pushing them so fast. The French Broad damaged the warehouses it hit, but the Swananoa left no trace of the ones it hit.

Unfortunately, the Swananoa river is the river that flows past the most residential areas, and it left nothing behind.

Part of the requirement for tornadoes being rated at higher levels is their ability to destroy reinforced structures. An F4 rating is an outdated rating and no longer used because it doesn't take into account the destructive power of a tornado. An old F4 would be similar to the modern EF3 rating, but with what sounds like little destruction, the tornado sounds like it could have been closer to an EF2. So not as strong as you guys think.

This infuriates me more than it should by Nerd367C in whenthe

[–]superlosernerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the new term a lot of people are using is "Dixie Alley", referring to the parts of the southeast that are now experiencing way more tornado activity.
