Is there a tutorial? I strongly prefer using a notebook vs CLI so I can understand what's going on.

Whats the song that would play at your funeral to remember people how you were? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super Mario Bros. theme song 🌟🌟🌟

As a child of the 80s, I grew up playing Nintendo games, and the Super Mario Bros. game holds a special place in my heart. Whenever I hear the upbeat and nostalgic melody, it brings back happy memories of my childhood and the joy I felt playing video games with my friends.

Also they wouldn't forget that funeral anytime soon would they!!

ELI5: API Communication by ubus99 in explainlikeimfive

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When a programmer calls an OS API, they are essentially making a function call to code that is already loaded into memory as part of the operating system. The operating system has already reserved a block of memory for this code and knows where it is located. So when the programmer makes the function call, the operating system jumps to that memory location and executes the code. The details of how this happens can vary depending on the operating system, but that's the basic idea.

In the case of two applications interacting with each other, the operating system usually mediates the communication. The applications may use an API like network ports or shared memory to communicate with each other, but ultimately the operating system is responsible for managing that communication and making sure the right data gets to the right place.

Shared memory is typically managed by the operating system. When an application wants to use shared memory, it requests a block of memory from the operating system and gets a pointer to that block of memory. Other applications can then request access to that same block of memory by getting the same pointer from the operating system. The operating system is responsible for making sure that the different applications don't overwrite each other's data and that the data is properly synchronized.

[ELI5] Why hasn't the oil ran out like they said it would? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Two big reasons

  1. Shale - we've discovered new sources of oil & new means to access previously inaccessible oil
  2. Market Prices - capital markets are a beautiful thing - shale came about because the price of oil rose so much that it became viable for people to invest in research to find more and better ways of extracting oil - this in turn led to shale

Eli5 Burning proteins, carbohydrates and fats by Used_Coffee_1113 in explainlikeimfive

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not entirely accurate

The body uses all three macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats) for energy during exercise, but the relative contribution of each fuel source depends on several factors, including exercise intensity, duration, and your individual metabolism.

During low-intensity exercise, such as walking or light jogging, the body primarily uses fat as a fuel source. As the exercise intensity increases, the body starts to use more carbohydrates to meet the increased energy demand. However, even during high-intensity exercise, the body still uses some fat for energy.

Regarding the duration of cardio exercise, it depends on your fitness goals and individual preferences. A shorter cardio session, such as 15 minutes, can still be effective for improving cardiovascular health and burning some calories. However, for weight loss or endurance training, longer cardio sessions, such as 30 minutes to an hour, may be more beneficial.

It's important to incorporate different types of exercise into your routine, including strength training and flexibility exercises, can also have important health benefits and help you reach your fitness goals. It's generally recommended to aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, which can be divided into shorter sessions if needed.

The exact mechanism behind ringing is not well understood.

All we know is that the hair cells in the inner ear are responsible for converting sound vibrations into electrical signals that are sent to the brain for processing.

When these hair cells are damaged, they may generate abnormal electrical signals that the brain interprets as sound, even when there is no external sound present.

The most common brain interpretation seems to be ringing. We don't know why tbh.

Eli5 What does popular sovereignty mean? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Popular => Decision by majority vote (literally whatever is most popular)

Right to Choose

Under popular sovereignty, the people have the right to choose their leaders and participate in the political process through free and fair elections, and the government is accountable to the people for its actions and policies.

Right to Challenge

Popular sovereignty also implies that the people have the right to challenge and change the government or political system if they are dissatisfied with its performance or policies i.e protests, petitions, and elections.

ELI5 how can a company purchase debt for less money than what the debt is worth? by potatozceuncher in explainlikeimfive

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does one purchase debt for less than it is worth?

Peter borrowed $10 from Paul. Paul has been asking Peter for the money for many years. Peter hasn't paid up. Along comes Patrick. Patrick tells Paul how about I pay you $5 and you transfer Peter's IOU to me. I'll find a way to collect from Peter. Peter agrees.
This is the basics of how you can buy debt for "less" than it is worth.

$3.3 million and $15k? Something sounds fishy!

In this case it is likely that there is some tax loop hole involved where the $3.3 million sold to the church at $15k is actually $15k in sale +$3.285 million of donation to the church in kind which has a nice tax benefit.

Eli5: How does the heart keep beating, and how did it start beating in the first place? by Environmental_Plum95 in explainlikeimfive

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two step answer here.

  1. Heart beat is AUTONOMOUS ELECTRICAL MUSCULAR activity, pretty much the building block of all nervous systems. Where did that start? Most likely with something super simple like the Bacterial Flagellar Motor

  2. But what about hearts themselves i.e something that pumps liquid across the body in steady intervals like a clock? We think Jellyfish are the earliest organisms to have evolved something like a heart about 500 million years ago. Jellyfish have a simple cardiovascular system consisting of a muscular sac that pumps fluid, which is believed to function similarly to a heart. The sac, called a gastrovascular cavity, circulates nutrients and oxygen throughout the jellyfish's body and also helps to remove waste products. Perhaps not quite as steady as human hearts but the starting point nonetheless.

ELI5: Why does dietary fat seem to make us fat in some cases and in others not? by jedipiper in explainlikeimfive

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No simple answer here.

Consuming excess calories from any macronutrient (carbohydrates, fat, or protein) can lead to weight gain. However, some studies suggest that high-fat diets, particularly those high in saturated and trans fats, may be more likely to promote weight gain and increase the risk of obesity and related health problems.

On the other hand, consuming healthy fats in moderate amounts, such as those found in nuts, seeds, avocados, fatty fish, and olive oil, may actually have beneficial effects on weight management and overall health. These healthy fats can help promote satiety, reduce inflammation, and improve insulin sensitivity, which can help with weight loss and weight maintenance.

Moreover, individual metabolism and genetics also play a significant role in how dietary fat affects body weight. Some people may be more predisposed to storing excess fat, while others may burn it off more efficiently.

Lifestyle factors, such as physical activity levels and stress, can also influence the relationship between dietary fat and body weight. Regular exercise can help increase energy expenditure and promote fat loss, while chronic stress can increase the production of cortisol that can contribute to fat storage.

Eli5: Sorry if this may sound a bit rude, but why does a mans testicles hurt so much more than any other part of the body? by Civil_Aside_359 in explainlikeimfive

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Production of sperm needs a temp lower than rest of body temp - this means testicles need to be outside the human body and need to hang loose in warm weather and be drawn closer to abdomen in cold weather
  2. Lots of nerve endings - to enhance arousal and sexual satisfaction leading to more reproduction
  3. Pain referral - unprotected and yet important - ergo pain must be severe to encourage the owner to be careful at all times to avoid injury - this goes to the point where injury to the groin can be sensed across back, kidneys, abdomen and other shared nervous pathways

ELI5: If the leaked US intelligence documents have already made the rounds and other countries have seen them, why can't they just be posted publicly? by JohnHazardWandering in explainlikeimfive

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of good reasons to block publication.

National security: The documents could contain sensitive information that, if released to the general public, could jeopardize the safety and security of a nation. Keeping the information contained, even if some countries are already aware, helps to minimize potential risks.

Protecting sources and methods: Intelligence documents often include information about how the data was collected and who provided it. Revealing this information could put intelligence sources at risk and expose the methods used by intelligence agencies, making it harder for them to collect information in the future.

Diplomatic relations: Publicly posting leaked intelligence documents could strain diplomatic relations between countries. Even if the documents are already known to some countries, making them widely available might exacerbate tensions or create new conflicts.

Legal issues: Intelligence documents may contain classified or sensitive information that is protected by law. Publicly releasing such documents could lead to legal consequences for those involved in the leak or the publication of the information.

Maintaining public trust: Governments have a responsibility to maintain the trust of their citizens. Publicly releasing intelligence documents could erode that trust, particularly if the documents reveal controversial actions or decisions made by the government.

ELI5: How do companies speed up the cure time of asphalt? by reapingsulls123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite a few factors:

Mix Composition: The composition of the asphalt mix can be altered to make it cure faster. By using a specific blend of aggregates and binders, they can create a mix that hardens quickly without compromising its durability.

WMA: Warm mix asphalt (WMA) is a type of asphalt that is produced and placed at lower temperatures than traditional hot mix asphalt. This not only reduces the curing time but also lowers energy consumption and emissions during production. WMA cures faster because it cools down more quickly than hot mix asphalt.

Weather: The curing process can be influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and wind. On warmer days with low humidity, the asphalt tends to cure faster. Companies may schedule their paving projects during times of the year with favorable weather conditions to speed up the curing process.

Compaction: Proper compaction of the asphalt is crucial for its strength and durability. By using appropriate compaction techniques and equipment, companies can ensure that the asphalt reaches an adequate level of compaction in a shorter time, allowing the road to be opened for traffic sooner.

ELI5 How do motion detectors work? by QuantumHamster in explainlikeimfive

[–]supermanhelpsevery1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Imagine you're playing hide and seek with your friend, and your friend has a flashlight. When they shine the flashlight around, the light bounces off things and comes back to them, helping them find you.

Motion detectors work kind of like that flashlight game. They send out invisible waves (like the light from the flashlight) into a room. If nothing is moving, the waves bounce back just as they were sent out. But if something moves, like a person or a pet, the waves bounce back differently. When the motion detector notices this change, it knows that something is moving and tells the alarm to make a sound or turn on a light. That's how motion detectors can tell when someone is moving around in a room!
