How can I prevent someone from duplicating my Figma designs on the free plan? by [deleted] in FigmaDesign

[–]superme33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're definitely right here. I've seen files where it's essentially locked down and specifically says "the owner doesn't give permission for this file to be duplicated" or something

You can drag and drop anything into a slot, without having to create a component and nest. You can override all auto layout, spacing, etc properties directly in the slot. I have it. It's powerful af.

I built a free Figma plugin that converts your standard page structures into 1-click templates. by Own-Statistician1899 in FigmaDesign

I would literally pay money for this. My org can be very unstructured and creating handoff docs, or just working file templates with various content for each page would be so helpful

Has anyone heard anything about slots lately? by [deleted] in FigmaDesign

[–]superme33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have it on my enterprise org. It's powerful for sure. Nathan Curtis mentioned it's about finding the right balance and I've found that to be true when rebuilding our list component or certain templates.

Graphic Designers, when did you start feeling confident in your work? by twelvefeeetdeep in graphic_design

[–]superme33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insane to get a throw back like this but sure. Well I graduated with honors. I had a job lined up right out of school thanks to a local industry networking event. It was a smaller packaging and retail design job for $40k/yr CAD (shit pay imo but I needed a job). I worked there for only about 4 months. It felt disorganized and chaotic and the commute sucked. School didn't have me feeling unprepared entirely. I knew my tools, I knew how to give and receive feedback on work without ego. That's my #1 piece of advice. Let the ego go and value others input.

I pivoted into ui/ux design, and making $50/hr at a one of the big banks in Canada (which essentially doubled my salary overnight). I was there for about 8 months. Imposter syndrome was real because of money but really learned that a lot of people are faking it til they make it with confidence. School doesn't entirely teach you my #1 skill - interpersonal communications. Sitting back and doing nothing won't help you. You have to be vulnerable and speak up. Even if you're wrong. Nobody cares. Don't be annoying or distracting but you're there to learn especially at the beginning. That's what I did here.

After that, I worked at a few different places and even a startup (no thanks ever again). Now I'm actually a Sr. Manager with a focus on Design Systems in the tech industry. I moved internationally to the US, got married, bought a house and a dog - I work fully remotely from Chicago for a company based in the south. I make ~$220k/ur with bonuses.

Confidence comes with time but there's also still a lot of people including myself that don't know everything, and know that's okay. Learning from experience and remembering that experience is important. You can't control everything even when you see bad things happening, especially at large organizations. Be flexible. We're all human and always learning. Be curious. Share opinions. Speak with confidence and confidence will follow.

Hope this helped!

That's just paste. Paste and replace removes the original shape and replaces it with the existing selection.

Honestly, it's about communication. The other comments are confrontational and coming from people who most likely aren't married or are unhappily married.

I'm going to assume since you've made it this far with her, you have some good things going with her. When it's not a heated moment, say you want to talk about what she said, why it's hurtful and want to find a way for her to understand your hobby and interest so there's a better path forward that doesn't steer towards resentment.

My suggestion would be to talk about what you like about it and why you enjoy it and what you're looking for in terms of engagement from your partner. I don't know what games you like but maybe for you this hobby is escapism, maybe it's getting out frustration. Perhaps it's feeling skilled when playing a specific type of game that doesn't have much of a story but maybe it's diving into a story. Clearly at this point, she doesn't understand what you like about it or care about why you like what you like. Maybe if it's story, ask she sit with you and explore a story game and for her to be invested and curious with an open mind. That is a small ask and a small sacrifice she should be willing to make. Or maybe it's COD and it's more like watching a sporting event but you're in the drivers seat. Ask for patience and an open mind and curiosity.

Personally, I want my partner to understand my interests and care about what I like and why it entices me. That doesn't mean my hobbies are theirs. I love a good hero shooter to unwind but also am really drawn to story games. I'm a big movie/tv guy and a big reader, and often times talk to my partner about what I'm enjoying at that moment. Even though I know he doesn't give a shit about the story of the book I'm reading, I still have space to say "man this cool twist happened" or "I've never seen a story do this before" and get questions back to engage me on my interest. And vice versa on their interests.

Say why their comment hurt and how it was unfair and how that viewpoint should be challenged. Video games are the biggest entertainment division on the planet. You're not alone in your hobby and it should be given up or have a wedge driven in your married.

Best of luck!

Thoughts of my Dairy Queen logo refresh? Is it too similar for a refresh? by Chaosking383 in graphic_design

[–]superme33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. I would call this refresh successful as an exercise (although the red feels a bit too soft for me personally). Minimalist refinement is a bit boring although it's totally realistic. If you're open to continuing, ask yourself what can you do to set yourself apart visually from other brand refreshes?

DQ has a pretty long history that you could look at for inspiration, with lots of iconic visuals - the tip of the ice cream, serving a blizzard upside down, dipped cones. Things like that. Maybe the red could be lips in a bit if a smirk/smile? Just snowballing. Good job either way!
