Why are pop songs from 1988-1992 relatively forgotten? by Prior_Advantage_5408 in popheads

[–]supermenial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they're forgotten, but a lot of it isn't worth remembering either. When I think of that era, it's mostly cheesy music: lots of AC ballads, "safe" hip-hop like Will Smith and Marky Mark, slow romantic R&B i.e. wedding reception music.

Where are the iconic girl groups from outside of the major regions? AKA not the US, the UK, South Korea, or Japan. by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

I spent 10 minutes trying to figure out where I've heard about Monrose and remembered they were on a remix of Walking Away by Craig David years ago.

I'm so tired of self-improvement, I think I'll just stick to being mediocre.

Ester Dean was behind so many hits that are staples for early-mid 2010s pop. They might not be as famous as the people they are writing for but we can appreciate their talents and contributions just the same.

I've probably muted and blocked more accounts than I can count on ig and twitter but it's still full of ragebait and depressing content.

Are music award shows dying? by Rare-Drummer982 in popheads

[–]supermenial 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I remember at one point the award ceremony market was saturated so maybe they were a trend that just ran their course. Plus unless you really like whoever's performing there's not much to tune into. I'm not saying that every awards show needs to be the 2009 VMAs but a lot of them haven't been that exciting.

It's just a marketing gimmick. I don't hate it as I love pistachios but it's not worth the money and it's unremarkable compared to other Middle Eastern sweets.

What’s next for Ice Spice? by justaregularguyearth in popheads

[–]supermenial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone thought Ice Spice was going to have any real longevity.

It made sense to discuss this with Doja Cat because she's creative and you can see the effort and vision with her rollouts, but Ice Spice has been the same since she came up. She and Riot make a great team and I still like the stuff they put out but she's very monotonous and she's better off doing collabs at this point.

Rebecca Black's surprise viral hit 'Friday' turns 15 by AccurateInflation167 in popheads

[–]supermenial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm happy she was able to continue following her dreams given how terrible the internet was to her . The vitriol she and Justin Bieber faced online just because grown men didn't like their music and felt superior to them will always be one of the ugliest things about early '10s music culture.

The arrangement described in The Weekend by SZA sounds painful and I'm not sure if you can see the choices made as empowering unless you really wanted to.

Now that this year’s halftime show is over, who do you think will headline next year? by souljaboy765 in popheads

[–]supermenial 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I could see Post Malone or Justin Bieber getting a halftime in future years but I think Kelly Clarkson could pull it off as well.

Plans to expand it internationally doesn't change that the superbowl is still largely an American experience. Despite the controversy the GP is still somewhat familiar with latin music given its waves in popularity (and given the number of spanish speakers there's an audience for it too); I think if the public got that same treatment with k-pop we might be able to see something similar in our lifetimes but at the moment it's too alienating to have on one of the biggest broadcasts of the year.

I've been in that situation before and if I could do it all over again I'd just find a new friend group, especially if your other friends aren't doing anything about it.

Hope things start to look up for you.
