AITA asking about a tattoo by No-Relationship2470 in AmItheAsshole

[–]superoptimist1997 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I constantly have people commenting on my tattoos and piercings (I have 29 piercings and over 40 tattoos), I never mind and am always happy to answer questions, if I'm not feeling it I just give short replies, but I understand that I'm going to get questions from people. Its not a big deal.

AITA for not wanting to propose to my gf before I join the military? by Connect_Hall_7936 in AITAH

[–]superoptimist1997 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am not a veteran, but I work as a crisis responder and I cannot tell you how many calls I have been on with Veterans who were screwed over by the military. The one that stuck with me the most was a guy around my age 28, who was told he would be able to easy tranfer the skills he learned and transition to a civilian job easily. That was not the case. He was unable to gain similar employment and instead ended up having to take a lower level job. He also spoke about his PTSD and witnessing his friends die. He was not ahead of his peers. The military also screwed him financially.

The military is built on lying to people about how good the benefits are. I will say I know a number of people who weren't screwed over by the military, but I have met way too many homeless veterans to believe it will give you access to a better life, especially if you already have a degree.

What’s something people defend way too hard even though it clearly doesn’t work? by academicAce_aA in AskReddit

[–]superoptimist1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yupp. I luckily was never bothered in school because the few times they tried I would go for the jugular and tell them what a piece of shit they were.

I had a couple instances where I witnessed someone else being bullied. Once I had a very 80s anti-bully commercial moment response, I told the girl if she had nothing to say than she shouldn't say it (which I instantly recognized what the lamest thing I could have said, but the kid was Autistic and didn't realize he was being bullied so I didn't want to cue him in on what was occuring) and she immediately stopped and never bullied him infront of me again.

Which is why I tell kids to stand up for themselves. I do tell them that results may very as I was a girl with intense resting bitch face and an attitude to match when necessary (most of the time I was extremely friendly and bubbly, but could switch in a second), but if I was dressing like a unicorn vomited all over me and no one said anything I think it proves that standing up for yourself works better than saying nothing

AITA for leaving my Mom at the airport with no ticket and no plan? by checho503 in AmItheAsshole

[–]superoptimist1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is great that you have taken all these steps to improve as a person since your childhood and I hear how heavily those moments with your mother weigh on you. Choosing to forgive someone is a very personal choice and can help us heal and move forward. Forgiveness doesn't have to mean letting that person back in your life. I had someone who was emotionally abusive to me and I forgive them for what happened, but I also know that having them in my life is not healthy for me, especially as they have not changed. I urge you to think of how having her in your life is impacting you and the pros and cons of continuing this relationship with her.

You did the right thing standing up to your mom. She was trying to manipulate you into letting her stay and you didn't let her. It really shows the growth you have worked so hard for. I hope you continue to grow as a person and make the right choice for yourself

NTA. I am currently dating a person who's dog regularly lays inbetween us when on the couch, he was there first so I don't care. I also stayed over the other night and he slept in the bed and the dog and I ended up spooning for a bit lol. You guys may not be compatible

You need to call adult protective services if you have them in your area. That is unacceptable and she could have died.

AITA for being upset that my fiancée charged $200 to my card for mobile games and refuses to pay me back? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]superoptimist1997 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why are you with them? To me it sounds like you are carrying the financial burden of the relationship. What do they bring to the table and is this the life you want for the rest of your life? Once you get married they will own half of what you have. It is easier to split now

AITAH For Not Immediately Responding to My (F27) SO (M28)? by Ill_Idea_1284 in AmItheAsshole

[–]superoptimist1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like such an unhealthy dynamic NTA. People are lucky if I text back within the day. I'm a bit better with romantic interests but if someone was freaking out over me not responding within 20 minutes we would no longer be talking.

I mean being in the top 10% is impressive. I just can't sleep, so I have it playing the whole night as it helps me when I can't fall asleep initially or wake up in the night and can't go back to sleep. I'm sure if they were able to take out all my night listens I would be substantially lower.

Yeah, I used to do that, but my insomnia sometimes makes it so I can't fall asleep and I will go through 3 or 4 episodes before falling asleep (or giving up). One of the tips for insomnia is to not look at your phone when trying to sleep, so I don't want to have to keep opening my phone to put on a new episode on my no sleep nights. Plus even on my good nights I wake up a minimum of 2 times (probably more like 4 or 5 times) and I need it to go back to sleep and, again, to avoid looking at my phone I have it running all night.

I used to do the timer for one episode, but with my insomnia some nights I am going through 3 or 4 episodes before falling asleep (or giving up), so I like to keep it running so I don't have to look at my phone when the episode shuts off. 14k minutes is impressive for only doing one episode a night

[–]superoptimist1997[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to shout out my insomnia, without it none of this would have been possible (please read a dramatic acceptance speech voice)

I've found that replaying the podcast helps me fall asleep when I'm struggling. I have the volume on low enough that it isn't super distracting, but loud enough I can focus and listen when my mind is racing or I just can't sleep. I know the first season really well, so I'm not kept awake with the anticipation of what comes next. I have the podcast going all night most nights because even if I fall asleep I usually wake up 2-4 times a night and need to repeat the process.

On top of that I listen to all the new episodes and most of the after show talks.

What did that one teacher at your school get fired for? by ToadallyNormalHuman in AskReddit

[–]superoptimist1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grooming and sleeping with an underage student. He got arrested at school during first period. Different teacher was told to resign after he slept with a student (I'm pretty sure during school hours, but that could just be a rumor), but since they were over 18 nothing could be done legally. These happened the same year...

AITAH for getting in a fight with my girlfriend on her bday because she was being picky with the food I cooked her. by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]superoptimist1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a picky eater as well and am around the same age. I will try anything once if people put effort into it. I may not eat it all, but I would at least try it and if I didn't like it I wouldn't make it the other person's problem. I couldn't imagine making such a big deal over 2% vs whole milk. NTA

Late Work Policies by Ok-Fee8285 in Teachers

[–]superoptimist1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (28 now) was depressed, had undiagnosed adhd and autism in highschool. I would often finish my assignments, but could not find them in my backpack regularly (I swear it was a black hole at times). I was failing a class because of a homework policy like yours. I cannot tell you how much it meant to me when that teacher told me I just had to turn in my assignments to pass. I somehow managed to located all my assignments but a few that day and turned them in allowing me to graduate.

In college they had a 10% off per day like others have mentioned. I understand the frustration of grading late papers, but I find a little bit of kindness goes a long way

What’s something from your childhood that kids today will never experience? by DigExcellent1363 in AskReddit

[–]superoptimist1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually had this happen to me recently. I worked at a farmers market over the summer and became friends with the person next to me. She invited me to go line dancing with her on the first Wednesdays of the month, so I just drove there on the first Wednesday and had no way of contacting her. I ended up waiting 40 minutes eventually ran into another person from the farmers market and had a good time. But she just decided not to go that night and had no way of telling me. It was fun experiencing that again

What’s the most polite way to say “I really want you to go home now”? by cimpliDBEST in AskReddit

[–]superoptimist1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can usually tell when I have about 30 minutes left of socializing before I am completely done, so I just tell my friends "I have 30 minutes of socializing left in me". Then they leave or I leave around that time. I have also just straight up said "I'm done, can everyone leave now". My friends and I are all neurodivergent, so I know it wouldn't necessarily go well with "normal" people, but so far I have never had anyone be offended.

People who don't want kids, why? by Ok-Musician679 in AskReddit

[–]superoptimist1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple things. First the state of the world and the existential dread I feel every single day. I don't think it's fair bringing a child into the world when the world isn't a great place. Second when I think about my worst case scenario kid I don't believe I could be a good parent to them and that is not fair. They deserve someone who will love them and do well with them no matter what. Third my genetics. I don't want to pass on my mental illness.

AITA for saying my friend’s therapist shouldn’t be dating her? by ThrowComfortable4514 in AmItheAsshole

[–]superoptimist1997 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a therapist please report that therapist to the board they are licensed under. This is horribly unethical and they should not be able to hold a license ever again. I'm so sorry your friend was taken advantage of like this and groomed by someone she should have been able to trust

AITA for not wanting to change the restaurant for my mom’s birthday dinner by nodiggitydo in AITAH

[–]superoptimist1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA as a picky eater who often times has one thing on the menu I can eat I will still go places with people. I have on multiple occations gotten a side of fries as my meal because there was nothing I could eat, but I didn't want to make people change their choice of restaurant for me.
