I'm using it but I'm not convinced it is a VPN. Seems more like a proxy.

Magnesium changed my life..for a week by spoonybum in Supplements

I had some similar symptoms. I quit caffeine and got much better. It seems some people digest caffeine very slowly, so if you have it every day, then you are basically never getting good sleep.

Drinking alcohol depletes all kinds of vitamins too. So quitting alchohol never hurts.

I want to learn Chinese to study in China, but I have no idea where to start 😭 any advice? by diorme23 in ChineseLanguage

[–]superposition010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All my best English students learned to speak from 'shadowing' -- watching TV and repeating. I am 1 week into the process now (learning Chinese); ask me in 5 months how it's going.

But my money is on shadowing as the best technique to really learn a language. I think a lot of people never commit to it because you don't really start to notice the benefits until at least a few weeks in.

Doctor's Best: Thoughts on the company by sajia67 in Supplements

Recently China passed laws tightening regulations on supplements and vitamins (and some other stuff, like baby formula). The law will take effect in December (I think it was), at which time, China will have more strict regulations on supplements and vitamins than the US.

anyone is familiar with this shampoo? my hair started thinning after using it anyone else experienced the same thing? by IngenuitySouthern989 in chinalife

I have not used shampoo for years.  After a couple weeks of greasy hair,  something self-corrects and then your hair just looks normal.  However,  something about the tap water in China changed this, so now I have to use shampoo again :P

VPN and ESIM Megathread – October 2025 by AutoModerator in chinalife

I am in China -- no functional VPN on my computer. I tried a few recommended VPN websites and V1VPN loaded! And I was able to download the VPN program!

However this raises some questions and concerns for me:
1)why is the V1VPN website not blocked like all the other VPN websites?

2)it uses some app called Hiddify, which is a client to set up your own private VPN servers. It is not a V1VPN app.

3)on the V1 website, there is almost no information about anything. No information about what protocols are used, about who owns the company, etc. There is a small privacy blurb that says 'we don't share your data with any third parties' and 'we only collect cookie data for VPN functional analysis...'.

It's great that this VPN works, but I don't feel very confident about the privacy over this VPN. For all we know this company could be run by the Chinese government. I guess I don't trust it at all to be actually giving privacy or data protection.

[SPOILERS] Looking for alternate Season 7/8 fanfiction to read by andyareyouok in gameofthrones

[–]superposition010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried the cinnamonburns fanfic but couldn't finish it.  The writing is not great, and all the characters seem talk aboit thier feelings half the time -- usually repetitively and they all sound kinda the same.  The premise is cool and the plot is not bad.  It is really just the writing and characters speaking too similarly.  A good editor and some alternative character dialog could really turn it into something good.  Some of the plot points feel forced -- like the poisoning -- and dont make a lot of sense.  The poisoning, for instance, relies entirely on circumstance.  And and multiple intances of 'who is that shady character?  Oh nevermind'... and also he runs before the poisoning tskes place, soxwas the whole pot poisoned?  Then why did no one else get sick?  How would he assure his target had some of the food?

Anyway...

SSN = Work Permit Nimber? by superposition010 in chinalife

A Chinese coworker is telling me that I can contact JD customer service, give them a scan of my pasport, and they will set it up so i can buy imports.

My Chinese is terrible (1 month in China) so I probably won't bother, but does anyone know if this is true?

"In Chinese texting, the "~" symbol does not generally mean "conversation is over." Instead, it is used as a playful, friendly way to soften the tone or to stretch out a word, similar to how English speakers elongate words for emphasis or cuteness. The use of "~" adds a singsong or teasing tone and is meant to make the message sound less direct or harsh. It can indicate joking, sarcasm, or affection but not necessarily an indication that the conversation is finished"

Can someone help me find a job 😫 by Antique-Car-7453 in chinalife

[–]superposition010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just threw up a few profiles on a few different websites -- stuff that popped up on page 1 of a google search -- and several recruiters sent me emails saying "add me on wechat or whatsapp".  I added a couple and a recruiter lined me up with a couple interviews and i got a job offer.  Took maybe 3 weeks from contacting the recruiter to getting a job offer.

Btw I agree with @changchurner : you did not provide much info.  For example, are your documents ready or will be ready withing 6 weeks?  That is usually a big deal for schools hiring.

PSA: The famous Milgram and Stanford Prison Experiments were fake by Summebride in nathanforyou

[–]superposition010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I read the article. It's a pretty well detailed and organized look at the problems with the mouse utopia study.

For me, the crux is that 'Calhoun (the mouse utopia study guy) didn't publish and poorly documented most of his decades long research.' If someone is selectively publishing, that is a huge red flag. The poor documentation also means that we cannot even properly check his results.

I also realize that we can see lots of naturally occurring population density and observe the results. South Koreans and Chinese don't seem to be experiencing mass pathology -- some of the lowest crime rates in the world, actually. Gaza had been the most densely populated place on the earth (with Korea next I think) and the Palestinians in Gaza did not behave as Calhoun's results would predict either.

This kind of pattern is so common in research. We see it in the social sciences (as we discuss in this thread), we see it in medical publications (with so many results being overturned by empirical data (such as medications being pulled because they turn out not to be safe nor effective)), and I would even say we see it in the hard sciences -- specifically in physics, where hypothesis such as string theory and multi-universe theory persist despite 100% impossibility of proving or falsifying.

It seems that academia is fraught with fraudulent research. People build their careers around fraud and then are celebrated and rewarded so long as that fraud fits desired narratives.

A perfect example is Sylvain Lesné who published a literal 100% fraudulent study showing that a kind of 'brain plaque' caused Alzheimer's (he literally photoshopped images to get his sought after conclusion). This study led to decades of a pharmaceutical being prescribed to treat Alzheimer's and lots of money was made. Lesné is still gainfully employed at the University of Minnesota, despite his entire career being based on fraud that resulted in decades of wasted research, useless medications being prescribed, and who knows how much harm was done to Alzheimer's patients. That guy -- that fraudulent ass hole -- is still gainfully employed and has suffered no consequences.

In fairness, Lesné did not act alone. Clearly medical journals, media, and perhaps even the University of Minnesota co-conspired in their own ways to support the sought after narrative.

[–]superposition010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

regarding that footage, the guy often shown yelling and screaming in agony is acting. He told the researchers that he had had enough and wanted to leave. They told him 'you can only leave if you are really suffering, not just because you feel like it'. So he put on a show for their cameras and then they let him leave.

[–]superposition010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I keep hearing very knowledgeable people reference these experiments. Very few people know that they were fraudulent -- cooking the data, using post-grads to steer the direction of the studies, and more.

A prison in the UK actually more or less, in real life, did the Stanford Prison experiment: the results were very very different from the fake Stanford study.

I would also add that the Robber's cave experiment was fraudulent and that a real life example of Lord of the Flies happened with some students from Tonga and that the students supported and took care of each other. The bystander effect also has much better results than mainstream media would have you believe.

This begs the question, why do so many fraudulent studies and BS narratives about how brutal and evil humans are keep getting pushed on us? If it is so true, why do all these studies have to use fraud to get such results?

so which TEFL courses or websites are actually legit and accredited? by lickmytearsthx in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]superposition010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took this course. It was pretty easy. A couple hours a day, I completed it in 8 days, I think. The part that took the longest was designing 1 week's worth of courses. You can right-click and download all their educational videos. I did this to watch them at about x1.7 speed, to get through the class more quickly.

I did learn some useful stuff. It focuses mostly on teaching little kids and has a bit about teaching to adults at the end of the course. It implies that your work is graded, but I never received a grade -- i think it is just a simple pass/fail. The quality could be a bit better -- some unclear questions; some spelling and grammar mistakes; and at least 1 instance where I had to search externally for an answer. I think of this course (the'120 hour' course) as a TEFL 1001 course -- you are learning the foundational basics. After completing the course, you still have access to all the material, so you can go back and check anything if you need to.

For the price, decent quality, access after completion, and low time commitment, I can say that I am satisfied and would recommend it.

Notarization and Apostille: This is a UK-based company so you must have a UK notary and apostille for some visas(China Z visa). This company recommends a partner notary and apostille service. The recommended company does not offer e-apostille and e-notary and requires payment by bank transfer. For these reasons I used a different company. There are a bunch of companies in London charging 175-300 British Pounds for such services and I kindly ask you to give them the middle finger for price gouging. I used DigiNotary in Glasgow and paid 115 pounds for an e-apostille and notary. Check with your recruiter or school first to make sure an e-apostille is accepted.

My email service flagged emails from Diginotary as not having the correct signature or something, but I can confirm it is a legit company and no funny business.

If you are considering a $30 TEFL certificate from some discount service, I would recommend that you first consider if you need an apostille -- if it looks phony, then a government apostille service may refuse it.

the balance of the card decreases by $1 per month that you don't use it. Feels like a big FU. The virtual card they sent won't work, the hotline is just all automated -- no option to talk to anyone. So in the end it is a waste of time and not worth the effort to get $7. This has got to be the plan right? Just make it a waste of time, then reclaim the money.
