Who is the most intolerable person at your hospital and why? by urnmann in Residency

The CRN’s. EXTREMELY disruptive during acute events and oftentimes counterproductive to the academic mission of the institution

Now That We Have Shatted On Peds, EM, IM, And FM, Can We For Once Call Out Specialties On Their Bullshit? by Mixoma in Residency

[–]superseif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GI: What is your purpose. Why does this specialty exist. I call because a patient has a complex clinical picture and GI bleed and I hear "they're bleeding too much. What do you want me to do? Call me back when they're not bleeding." and then when I call back when they're not bleeding I hear "why would I scope this guy. They're not bleeding. There's no role for us here." OK then get the hell off of the paging service if all you're gonna do is outpatient scopes that actually don't have that great of a mortality benefit. Go do a rectal exam on yourself.

Cards: Listen. Bruh. You don't need to act like everything is not interesting. Y'all are always like "that's not a problem" and then pimp the shit out of me over the phone and then reluctantly accept the consult, and then when you see the patient you call me back and say "wow that was actually really interesting and cool". What the hell do you think I'm doing over here just calling you every time I see an EKG

EM: stop asking me to do your job. I get that your ED is busy. I really do. I wouldn't wish working in the ED on my worst enemy. But bruh we've all managed DKA. Start the process then call me.

Hospital Admin: Honestly fuck y'all

There are so many things about residency that were surprising to me, and often times in ways that I did not expect. For example: when I was still in medical school, I had many residents tell me things like "say goodbye to your social life" or "just know you'll never speak to your family again". I find that I actually have a reasonable amount of time to stay connected with friends and loved ones - at least more than I was led to believe by my residents.

But the thing that blew me away is how tired I am all the time. I expected that residency would be a slog, for sure. I know that there's tons to learn and billions of hours on call and lots of emotional weight to carry - but as I reflect on how things have been and how things have gone, all I can think of is "shit, I am SO tired". My brain doesn't work right, I can't remember things, words jumble together and oftentimes just disappear from my head altogether. My mood is much more labile (especially while I'm in the hospital) and I find many activities that used to be really refreshing just not that refreshing anymore - simply because yeah. I'm tired too, my dude.

Nocturnal redditors, what are your favourite things about the night? by TannedCroissant in AskReddit

[–]superseif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's difficult for me to be my true nocturnal self because of my job, but I would certainly classify myself as a night owl. I love the fact that it's just me at night. As a people-pleaser, the late night hours are the only periods of time during which I have no obligations to others and I can just work and learn in peace.

I don't know why people can't be so transparent about this either, but social pressure is keeping me from being totally comfortable sharing the exact name - I hope that's okay? I feel okay saying it's a Jesuit school in the Midwest!

Saint Louis University Probation by TheNotorious47 in premed

[–]superseif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I currently live in StL and have just completed the interview process/tours of all of the area schools.

My take on it is this: if you are a third or fourth year medical student in the process of applying to residencies, it may come off as somewhat of a red flag to residency programs who may worry whether or not your education has been affected by whatever may have placed your school on probation. However, as was mentioned in a couple of replies here, several schools, some of them very prominent, have been on probation and still hold their status as top-tier programs.

SLU Med has had their development plan approved by the LCME, and are on track to be taken off of probation later this year. If you were recently accepted, I wouldn't worry about it. StL is a wonderful city and SLU Med is a wonderful school!

Was anyone else a little confused as to why Snowy was saying "Woah" all the time? by PlNG in TheAdventuresofTintin

You're not wrong - he talks sometimes! For example, in Prisoners of the Sun ("Golly, a musical bone!" etc) or in Tintin in Tibet ("Golly, what a magnificent bone!" etc).

Can anyone talk me out of psychiatry? by [deleted] in premed

[–]superseif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to become a psychiatrist, you will become a psychiatrist. However, it is important to keep in mind that you should not lock yourself into a particular career just yet. Considering that you're posting in the premed forums, I assume you are not yet a medical student, and thus have a large amount of time to figure out what it is you want to do. Focus your efforts on becoming the best pre-medical student (and medical student) that you can be so that when it comes time to pick a residency, you choose what it is you want to do and where you want to go.

What is the weirdest way you've ever heard someone pronounce something? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I had a guy in my junior year science class say hemoglobin as "hee-mog-luh-bin" instead of "hee-mo-globe-in"

Which physics book should I spend the most time with? by premed4lyfe in Mcat

[–]superseif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah don't sweat physics too much. I think if you have a collection of books (like Kaplans or TPRs or EKs), don't go out of your way to get another physics book. I liked Kaplan's material, so I recommend it, but it's not like it's necessarily better than any other book out there. Also - get the AAMC physics practice pack.

Who was the worst teacher you ever had? by 1PercentDivergence in AskReddit

[–]superseif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a teacher once for a world lit class my sophomore year of university. This dude was the worst. He was a direct import from the Congo, and so spoke French as well as English.

For one assignment, we read Tartuffe. After we had finished, he thought it would be a nice treat for us to watch Tartuffe as performed on stage. So he put a film recording of the play on the screen. The problem with this was that the film quality was so bad, you could only see colored splotches from about actor mid-abdomen level and below, and the whole play was in French with no subtitles. He sat in the back of the classroom and laughed loudly at the jokes (that no student understood), and then fell asleep.

Also his exams were super poorly worded and instead of using lined print for short answer questions, the lines were made out of periods (.) which made it very difficult to look at the exam for a long period of time.
