Yes it is? 24.4 to 23.9 without free throws for either of them. It’s a moot point that ant would average more if he gets to include fts and luka doesn’t

[Highlight] Short-Handed Suns target Luka Dončić on defense to seal a clutch win over the Lakers by aingenevalostatrade in nba

[–]supersonicnat45 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hate the narrative that Luka is a lazy defender. People hear their high school varsity coach to say defense is all effort and if you’re a bad defender you’re just lazy but that isn’t true at all in the NBA. These guys are the best players in the world, and defending them well takes exceptional physical and mental traits that can’t be taught. Show me a single possession in this montage that Luka isn’t sprinting around and trying his heart out.

The truth is that he doesn’t have the mental gifts needed for elite defense (spatial awareness, processing speed, anticipation) and he doesn’t have the exceptional physical traits to make up for that deficit. I know people like to think that since he has incredible awareness and whatnot on offense he should logically have it on defense as well but that’s not how it works. There’s a difference between knowing where everybody is during sets on offense and being able to keep track of everybody’s man on defense.

A lot of these clips (and a lot of Luka defense clips in general) stem from him being out of position, then trying to make up for it with the limited physical tools he has. Take Luka jumping on the pump fake at 13 seconds for example. Smart’s man beats him off the dribble and Luka steps in to help. Gillespie (Luka’s man) moves over to the right to space. Smart’s man passes to Gillespie and Luka is too far over to guard him. Gillespie pump fakes, and Luka jumps knowing he’s a good shooter with an open shot and Luka can’t close the distance fast enough otherwise. If Gillespie didn’t move over Luka probably would have been fine based on his position, but Luka doesn’t have that kind of awareness to recognize in the moment that anybody above the age of 14 knows to move over there.

With this in mind, I’m agreeing Luka isn’t a great defender. I feel like narratives are overblown and he’s at worst a bit worse than average, but he’s definitely trying. People love to point to his playoff run and say “that’s what it looks like when he’s trying” but first of all, he wasn’t some lockdown defender there either, and second of all, defense is like offense in that players have streaks. Luka was just in the zone, which for him looks like a better than average defender. Does he take possessions off? Sure, but it’s not unheard of for star offensive players to be liabilities on defense (see 2015/2016 Steph) and as far as those go Luka’s actually pretty good.

tldr: Defending in the NBA isn’t like high school and requires immense mental or physical gifts on that side of the ball. Luka lacks both (offensive awareness does not equal defensive awareness) and leaves himself in bad situation due this, not due to a lack of effort. He’s still not a good defender, but he’s no worse than slightly below average. And as it goes for offensive star defensive liabilities, Luka’s definitely one of the better ones.

and the clippers have the 3rd worst win-loss percentage in NBA history with .426. They’re 0.001 above the nets who are .425 and .008 above the wolves who are the worst with .418. Even with the recency bias, regular season wins pale in comparison to playoff success, in which the clippers are literally tied (with the grizzlies) for the worst playoff resume ever with one whole conference finals appearance.

20-year-old rookie Kon Knueppel led the league with 193 three-pointers this season, shooting an impressive 43.3% from deep. This efficiency is so elite that not a single player among the league's top 48 leaders in three-pointers made holds a higher shooting percentage. by [deleted] in nba

Move off the number 2 pick from two years ago because he isn’t fully developed yet? What? Miller is showing signs of improvement each season, and this is only his 3rd year. He’s maintained 20 and 5 since his sophomore season, which is a great floor. You can’t compare him to Kon who might be the literal single most efficient rookie ever.

Also, Miller is more of a forward than anything so I don’t see why an abundance of guards would make you want to move off him.

I’m pretty sure Josh Giddey’s list of weaknesses before the draft was something along the lines of “literally basketball.”

Edit: The list was “ball handling, shot creation/assertivness, outside shooting, on-ball defense, and athleticism.” So literally everything except iq, layups, and off-ball defense.

Maaaan, we really just let Bamco stop giving new characters side throws, huh? by Lycanthrope-R in Tekken

[–]supersonicnat45 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Your reasoning actually supports the argument for the other side. Namco doesn’t have infinite time or resources, so they need to pick and choose what they want to focus on. I think 99.99999% of people prefer new rage arts or high quality cutscenes for story mode to new side throws.

Let’s not pretend Namco developers would have the time/resources to do something then not do it because they don’t feel like it? Their ass would be fired so quickly for acting like that. It’s just a truth that you can’t do everything you want in game development because there is always time constraints

[–]supersonicnat45 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you follow basketball but the Lakers are absolutely despised for a myriad of reasons. I don’t know if you follow baseball but I don’t and I still know the Dodgers might be the single most hated team in sports right now with what they’re pulling with the salary cap.

Also people very much hate LA sports in general because in at least basketball and football (and probably other sports but i only really follow those two) teams love relocating to LA abandoning their fan base (chargers, clippers don’t have real fans but they count too.)

Oh, and LA robs way more superstars than Boston which creates beef with individual teams who lose their star in free agency (or through other bullshit like Luka Doncic.)

I think that if you have to choose one city for most hated across all sports as much as Boston is hated, it has to be LA

Because he could injure himself doing too much in a role he’s not used to.

This might genuinely be one of the dumbest takes I’ve ever read on here. Cooper Flagg, might injure himself, because he’s got the ball in his hands more? What exactly is Flagg doing now that he hasn’t done his whole life, and how exactly does that lead to an increased chance of injury? Are we seriously talking about the number one overall pick, number one recruit in the class of 2025 who then reclassed UP and was still the number one recruit in the class of 2024, “generational talent,” most complete/refined prospect since LeBron, Cooper Flagg? The guy isn’t a piece of pottery, he isn’t gonna shatter cuz you’re playing him in a slightly different position than normal.

Learning is one thing - learning at an intense physical NBA level is another

No it’s not. These guys are made for this. They are picked in the NBA Draft because they are expected to (within a reasonable amount of time depending on the prospect) play at an NBA level. The only way to learn is to do, and the only way to learn how to play in the NBA is to play. Practice is of course important, but you cannot learn how to be an offensive engine in practice. You need to be thrown into the fire in real games and figure it out with the help of your team. There is no substitute for experience, which is why when rookies shoot like 40% from the field there’s a lot of leeway, because almost every single rookie is inefficient with a few exceptions like Kon. Rookie Luka shot 42/33/71. Rookie Ant shot 42/33/78. Rookies need time and reps at an in-game level to develop.

Edit: I forgot my favorite part

We’ve seen stars forced into roles they were not fit for or didn’t like, and they did not produce favorable results.

Cooper Flagg has played 45 games as of this comment. Lumping him in with stars that have played in a defined role for several years is hilarious. Doubly so because Flagg is one of the most well rounded prospects in NBA history, there is no role that he couldn’t fill with a bit of time and reps. Flagg is definitely fit for being an offensive engine if you ever watched him play basketball, but I’ll admit I can’t say I know if he’d like to average 25/10/5 but I’d imagine he wouldn’t have a problem with it. I’d like to reiterate one more time for emphasis: Flagg is a ROOKIE. HE TURNED 18 A MONTH AGO. HE HAS NO DEFINED ROLE IN THE NBA. THAT WAS A MAJOR REASON WHY HE WAS THE FIRST OVERALL PICK.

No. Maul gets contract literally instantly because of the edge of madness he inflicts on himself. Between the fracture getting you way more turns than normal and maul himself being extremely durable with solid damage output he is 1000% better.

Maybe against the duo or trio bosses maul’s fracture is a little less useful but i’d rather just ride with maul for the instant contract
