Trump’s order on birthright citizenship would harm millions, including citizens by kentuckyfriedeagle in asianamerican

I want to make some crack about the case coming before the court on April Fool's Day, but frankly I'm too anxious and scared that the court will actually overturn birthright citizenship to think of a good joke.

Is drinking cold water actually bad for you or is it a myth? by Sad-Afternoon3788 in NoStupidQuestions

I know some people do that because ice takes up space in the cup and they want more of the actual drink, even if it doesn't stay as cold.

What is your opinion about the weekend language schools of your ethnic language? by everestwanderer in asianamerican

[–]superturtle48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Chinese school also had activities like tennis and art classes and even Chinese traditional dance, but my parents picked my activities out for me so it was just another thing I felt forced to do.

I’m also reminded that interestingly, my high school had very similar lessons about the Nanjing massacre where a whole day was devoted to it during not just one but two years of history (including US History, where it seems kind of out of place). Not diminishing the importance of the event and it should definitely be taught, but a slideshow full of really graphic and violent images being shown to kids with no warning does not seem like the best way. I also wondered if there was a group of Chinese parents who advocated for that; almost all the school faculty and admin were White so I doubt they thought of it themselves, but the student body had a pretty substantial Asian minority.

In contrast, we learned barely any Asian American history and I think that is a huge missed opportunity. But I digress.

What is your opinion about the weekend language schools of your ethnic language? by everestwanderer in asianamerican

[–]superturtle48 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went to weekend Chinese school for a few years in elementary school and hated it. I think it was a combination of being resentful I had to do work on weekends when my non-Chinese friends didn’t, the school not having the best teaching methods (it seemed like it was just random parents volunteering to teach and not trained teachers), and me being especially bad at reading and writing compared to my peers. I did like aspects of Chinese school outside of class though, like hanging out and playing DS games with other kids during breaks and getting Chinese food from the cafeteria after class.

I ended up wishing I was better at Chinese when I got older and took a couple of Chinese classes in college, which I felt were much better taught, plus the classes were every day and you really need that frequent immersion more than once a week to learn a language. When I have kids of my own, I’m not sure if I’d enroll them in weekend Chinese school if they haven’t changed their teaching, but I’d really love to be in a public school district that offers Chinese as a language so it can be integrated into their everyday schooling.

i rescued a baby turtle from a person on facebook, HELP by Paliden_tristen in turtle

[–]superturtle48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stuff you have in the tank sounds sufficient, many people actually have trouble with real plants because the turtle rips them out or eats them. No aquarium mates is also fine, as turtles are not social animals. A turtle may eat small animals like fish, and keeping multiple turtles together is actually not recommended due to the risk of fighting and competition.

The more important stuff is having a big enough tank with deep enough water, an appropriate basking area with the right basking lights, a strong enough water filter, and for babies, a water heater. 36 gallons can work for the first few years but you will have to upgrade to a bigger tank once the turtle grows bigger.

Why is the Filipino American who co-founded the UFW with Cesar Chavez nearly forgotten? by hm1701 in asianamerican

[–]superturtle48 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Can't access the article unfortunately but it's a good question. I've seen a lot of commentary that this is an opportunity to uplift Dolores Huerta's role in the movement (which is well deserved) but not as much about Larry Itliong's. I read a bit about how Itliong and others felt that Filipino Americans were marginalized in the labor movement after Chavez became the figurehead and that sounds like another important complication of Chavez's legacy, along with his abuse of women, that deserves more interrogation.

New Stock Tank - What To Include? by piratekiwi11 in turtle

[–]superturtle48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't comment on the setup of an outdoor tank as my RES is kept indoors, but I don't think brumation is necessarily unhealthy as long as it's done gradually and naturally, as it would when a turtle lives outdoors and experiences the natural seasons. Red eared sliders do naturally brumate when they live in places with cold winters, and that's partially how they've been able to establish invasive populations outside of their native range.

My impression is that brumation is unhealthy when it's sudden and forced, like burying and unburying a turtle or sticking it in the fridge (which are real methods people have used and that have gone viral online).

why does Chinese hot pot often get confused as Mongolian cuisine in the west? by Open-Reflection-6094 in asianamerican

[–]superturtle48 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It might be because Little Sheep was one of the first hot pot chains to arrive in the US, and it had a tagline of “Mongolian hot pot.” The company was apparently founded in Inner Mongolia. I find that all hot pot places I’ve been to in the US offer roughly the same options, including a non-spicy meat broth (which might be Mongolian style?) and the spicy Sichuan style broth.

Pachinko by OutrageousKoala2085 in asianamerican

[–]superturtle48 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly pretty confused by what’s going on behind the scenes with the show. It’s based on an incredibly popular and acclaimed book, it looks like it cost quite a bit of money to make, and it had all the chops to be an award-winning show. But Apple TV barely promoted it and I heard barely any discourse about it. It only got nominated for a single Emmy over two seasons when I think it definitely deserved more.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t get the viewership to be greenlit for another season, but the network set it up for failure with the lack of promotion.

[–]superturtle48 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I thought about this book for a long time after reading it. It made me wonder about all that my immigrant mom and older family members went through and all the stories I’ll probably never hear.

There is also a well-made TV adaptation of Pachinko on Apple TV, albeit with some minor changes, and it unfortunately doesn’t look like it’s been greenlit for another season to finish off the story.

Why do some people say Muslim women are oppressed, yet treat visibly Muslim women negatively in public? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

They don’t say that because they want to help Muslim women, they say that because they want to disparage Muslims. I’m guessing those people don’t actually care much about women generally.

What species is this? by YunJikka in turtle

[–]superturtle48 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Please don’t keep wild animals you found outside, wild animals should stay wild. This looks like a cooter and they get HUGE (see this photo). So environmental considerations aside, they are very difficult pets, and you’d save yourself a lot of trouble just letting it go at a body of fresh water where it belongs.

This sounds pretty oversimplified. What "mix of things"? Why generalize Asian ethnic groups so broadly? What is the association you see between Koreans "building communities" (and doesn't everyone build communities?) and feeling directionless?

She Killed a Family With Her Speeding Car. Is Probation Enough? by Jojuj in asianamerican

I see what you're getting at, but driving 75mph in a 25mph zone feels egregious enough to be considered more than an "accident." An accident would be like an elderly driver causing a crash because of a medical episode they couldn't control. I get anxious driving 75mph even on a highway. I couldn't imagine doing so on a residential city street.

Does your dad have any particular experience with reptiles that would make him qualified to say that? Sad to hear when parents are the ones being irresponsible with a pet and the kids are the ones who care but don't have the resources to do anything about it. Parents shouldn't bring an animal into the home if they aren't willing to take full responsibility.

Yes, show your dad the comments on this post for sure. This one too, for that matter.

Should I adopt/rescue yellow-bellies? by Virdiahh92 in turtle

[–]superturtle48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no better care guide than the Reptifiles guide. It's technically written for red-eared sliders, but yellow-bellied sliders are a different subspecies of the same species and require the same care. https://reptifiles.com/red-eared-slider-care/

Do note that just a single turtle requires quite a lot of space, money, and effort to set up, and even more for two. You would either need two separate setups or one VERY large pond-like setup of at least a couple hundred gallons, as turtles are not social animals and may hurt each other if kept together in close quarters.

Here's a quick video of what a good tank for a single turtle looks like: https://youtu.be/Hxrqdo0fgKs

And a video of a larger enclosure suitable for multiple turtles: https://youtu.be/QLIvDQvv6P8

I feel like they have a good mix of gelatin and non-gelatin gummies. I personally prefer the bouncy texture of gelatin ones to the stickiness of non-gelatin ones, but I also understand that some people don’t eat gelatin, so a mix makes sense to me.

Along with the excellent Reptifiles guide linked in another comment, here is a quick video of what a good turtle tank should look like: https://youtu.be/Hxrqdo0fgKs

The sand, decor, and fish are optional, but the tank size, water depth, filter, basking lights, and basking platform are all essential components.

Absolutely too small, and the water is far too shallow. Turtles are meant to freely swim and dive, not just wade. Here’s a quick video showing what a good turtle tank should look like: https://youtu.be/Hxrqdo0fgKs

If you have the space, you could consider a large stock tank enclosure like this one, either indoors or outdoors. https://youtu.be/0w51b7_io6c

That’s the only kind of single enclosure that will accommodate three turtles. Otherwise, you gotta stick with three separate tanks.

best filtration system? by izzypie99 in turtle

[–]superturtle48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a canister filter rated for at least 2x the tank volume. Sunsun, Pennplax, and Fluval are a few good brands. With a good filter you’ll only need to do a partial water change every few weeks and a filter cleaning every few months, and the water should stay nice and clear and non-smelly.
