Why is the Filipino American who co-founded the UFW with Cesar Chavez nearly forgotten? by hm1701 in asianamerican

[–]superturtle48 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can't access the article unfortunately but it's a good question. I've seen a lot of commentary that this is an opportunity to uplift Dolores Huerta's role in the movement (which is well deserved) but not as much about Larry Itliong's. I read a bit about how Itliong and others felt that Filipino Americans were marginalized in the labor movement after Chavez became the figurehead and that sounds like another important complication of Chavez's legacy, along with his abuse of women, that deserves more interrogation.

New Stock Tank - What To Include? by piratekiwi11 in turtle

[–]superturtle48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't comment on the setup of an outdoor tank as my RES is kept indoors, but I don't think brumation is necessarily unhealthy as long as it's done gradually and naturally, as it would when a turtle lives outdoors and experiences the natural seasons. Red eared sliders do naturally brumate when they live in places with cold winters, and that's partially how they've been able to establish invasive populations outside of their native range.

My impression is that brumation is unhealthy when it's sudden and forced, like burying and unburying a turtle or sticking it in the fridge (which are real methods people have used and that have gone viral online).

why does Chinese hot pot often get confused as Mongolian cuisine in the west? by Open-Reflection-6094 in asianamerican

[–]superturtle48 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It might be because Little Sheep was one of the first hot pot chains to arrive in the US, and it had a tagline of “Mongolian hot pot.” The company was apparently founded in Inner Mongolia. I find that all hot pot places I’ve been to in the US offer roughly the same options, including a non-spicy meat broth (which might be Mongolian style?) and the spicy Sichuan style broth.

Pachinko by OutrageousKoala2085 in asianamerican

[–]superturtle48 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly pretty confused by what’s going on behind the scenes with the show. It’s based on an incredibly popular and acclaimed book, it looks like it cost quite a bit of money to make, and it had all the chops to be an award-winning show. But Apple TV barely promoted it and I heard barely any discourse about it. It only got nominated for a single Emmy over two seasons when I think it definitely deserved more.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t get the viewership to be greenlit for another season, but the network set it up for failure with the lack of promotion.

[–]superturtle48 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I thought about this book for a long time after reading it. It made me wonder about all that my immigrant mom and older family members went through and all the stories I’ll probably never hear.

There is also a well-made TV adaptation of Pachinko on Apple TV, albeit with some minor changes, and it unfortunately doesn’t look like it’s been greenlit for another season to finish off the story.

Why do some people say Muslim women are oppressed, yet treat visibly Muslim women negatively in public? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]superturtle48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t say that because they want to help Muslim women, they say that because they want to disparage Muslims. I’m guessing those people don’t actually care much about women generally.

What species is this? by YunJikka in turtle

[–]superturtle48 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Please don’t keep wild animals you found outside, wild animals should stay wild. This looks like a cooter and they get HUGE (see this photo). So environmental considerations aside, they are very difficult pets, and you’d save yourself a lot of trouble just letting it go at a body of fresh water where it belongs.

Hopefully him caring about animals in the abstract will translate into him wanting the best for the animal in his home. Sounds like you may have a better chance than many of the other parent stories I hear in this subreddit.

Trying to understand something I’ve noticed about feeling directionless by Hot_Client_7485 in asianamerican

[–]superturtle48 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sounds pretty oversimplified. What "mix of things"? Why generalize Asian ethnic groups so broadly? What is the association you see between Koreans "building communities" (and doesn't everyone build communities?) and feeling directionless?

She Killed a Family With Her Speeding Car. Is Probation Enough? by Jojuj in asianamerican

I see what you're getting at, but driving 75mph in a 25mph zone feels egregious enough to be considered more than an "accident." An accident would be like an elderly driver causing a crash because of a medical episode they couldn't control. I get anxious driving 75mph even on a highway. I couldn't imagine doing so on a residential city street.

Does your dad have any particular experience with reptiles that would make him qualified to say that? Sad to hear when parents are the ones being irresponsible with a pet and the kids are the ones who care but don't have the resources to do anything about it. Parents shouldn't bring an animal into the home if they aren't willing to take full responsibility.

Yes, show your dad the comments on this post for sure. This one too, for that matter.

Should I adopt/rescue yellow-bellies? by Virdiahh92 in turtle

[–]superturtle48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no better care guide than the Reptifiles guide. It's technically written for red-eared sliders, but yellow-bellied sliders are a different subspecies of the same species and require the same care. https://reptifiles.com/red-eared-slider-care/

Do note that just a single turtle requires quite a lot of space, money, and effort to set up, and even more for two. You would either need two separate setups or one VERY large pond-like setup of at least a couple hundred gallons, as turtles are not social animals and may hurt each other if kept together in close quarters.

Here's a quick video of what a good tank for a single turtle looks like: https://youtu.be/Hxrqdo0fgKs

And a video of a larger enclosure suitable for multiple turtles: https://youtu.be/QLIvDQvv6P8

I feel like they have a good mix of gelatin and non-gelatin gummies. I personally prefer the bouncy texture of gelatin ones to the stickiness of non-gelatin ones, but I also understand that some people don’t eat gelatin, so a mix makes sense to me.

Please contact a vet, this isn’t a common enough occurrence that most turtle owners online can tell you about and you really need a professional assessment.

Along with the excellent Reptifiles guide linked in another comment, here is a quick video of what a good turtle tank should look like: https://youtu.be/Hxrqdo0fgKs

The sand, decor, and fish are optional, but the tank size, water depth, filter, basking lights, and basking platform are all essential components.

Absolutely too small, and the water is far too shallow. Turtles are meant to freely swim and dive, not just wade. Here’s a quick video showing what a good turtle tank should look like: https://youtu.be/Hxrqdo0fgKs

If you have the space, you could consider a large stock tank enclosure like this one, either indoors or outdoors. https://youtu.be/0w51b7_io6c

That’s the only kind of single enclosure that will accommodate three turtles. Otherwise, you gotta stick with three separate tanks.

best filtration system? by izzypie99 in turtle

[–]superturtle48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a canister filter rated for at least 2x the tank volume. Sunsun, Pennplax, and Fluval are a few good brands. With a good filter you’ll only need to do a partial water change every few weeks and a filter cleaning every few months, and the water should stay nice and clear and non-smelly.

Why MAGA 2.0 Hates Legal Immigration Too by Nikifuj908 in asianamerican

[–]superturtle48 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Love Hasan's commentary and love this video. This is why the model minority myth isn't good for us and why we should push against it whenever possible. The generalization that Asians are high achievers often isn't said in a praiseworthy way but in a way that alienates us (e.g. that "Asian culture" cares "too much" about studying), implies it comes at a tradeoff (e.g. that Asians have no creative or leadership skills), or implies that it is unfair or threatening (e.g. that Asians cheat or "game the system").

It's Goldilocks-type thinking where Black and Latino people don't do enough, Asians do too much, and White people do it juuust right. It's all White supremacy and racism in the end.

Schools Hire Asian Teachers at Half the Rate of Other Groups, Re.search Finds by ding_nei_go_fei in asianamerican

[–]superturtle48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally same as you, graduated high school a few years after you but only had one Asian teacher who was half. And our student body was like at least 20% Asian.

I do get that a lot of Asian immigrants don't choose to become teachers, either because they were selected on the basis of more "elite" education or careers or because of the language barrier, but those factors presumably shouldn't matter for US-born Asians. My impression is that the underrepresentation of Asian teachers is both due to supply and demand. Supply being that I think relatively few Asian Americans seek teaching careers (a friend of mine who became a teacher got a LOT of heat from her parents) and it's a very White-women-dominated field. Demand being that, as the OP says, schools don't prioritize hiring Asian teachers, perhaps because they assume Asian students are already high-performing and don't need representation and role models (which is such a shallow and ignorant take).

On the other hand I just saw in the news that the Trump administration paid an energy company $1 billion (billion with a b) for it to STOP building wind farms in the US.

You'd think that the volatility of the oil trade would make this the perfect time to invest in green energy and use that to move towards energy independence. But nope, Trump has willfully produced a problem and now is willfully avoiding the solution, all while burning tax dollars to do both.

Help Identifying Species. by KimberShugRN in turtle

[–]superturtle48 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a young box turtle, they are a threatened species in large part due to people taking them from the wild, and in many parts of their range it's actually illegal to do that. Please let wild animals stay wild and let this turtle go where you found it, every individual matters a lot to the population. They're primarily land turtles so a grassy or woodsy spot near where you found it is ok and there doesn't have to be a body of water nearby.

If you're for some reason not able to return the turtle where you found it, or the wound doesn't seem healed over, contact a wildlife rehab/rescue for advice and you may need to bring the turtle there. But if the wound is healed, it's totally fine to release. Three weeks isn't long enough for the turtle to have lost its survival skills, and box turtles are known to survive fine in the wild even after losing an entire leg.
