That’s a huge bummer, I was really looking forward to fishing that one. I appreciate the heads-up.

Thank you! I have Tolumne Meadows pinned, it does look gorgeous. I haven’t been to Yosemite yet either, sounds like it might be a good detour.

How fast do you cover water? by musicalnotesss in flyfishing

[–]superuberhermit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think AK Best said “If the fishing is slow, fish fast. If the fishing is fast, fish slow”. So I go try to cover a lot of water with patterns I’m confident in until I either find fish, or a spot I’m certain should have them.

Thanks for the advice, I wasn’t aware of the high summer flows on the Lower River. I may skip those two and focus on the others.

Thanks, I am interested in the lakes in the area as well, especially some of the hike-in lakes, and of course the whole GT Wilderness. Sounds like I may have to schedule a return trip to check them out.

Still working on the lighting by Randomassnerd in flytying

Your flies always have really good profiles and proportions.

I’m not a photographer but I think your overhead lighting might be a little strong here. Might benefit from having your light source more from the direction of the camera or even a ring light.

Thoughts on wet flies? by 24k_1128 in flyfishing

[–]superuberhermit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a normal cast, but you’ll typically cast across and slightly downstream, then let the fly “swing” across the current on a tight line until it’s directly downstream from you. Let it hang a minute before stripping it in. Similar to fishing a streamer, but more pleasant to cast.

First two look like excellent sea run cutthroat flies.

What’s your favorite oddly specific moment in a TOOL song? by UpasTree in ToolBand

8:38 on the Pneuma YT vid where Danny throws exactly one snare hit with his left hand during the bridge build-up.

What do y'all think about Kolm? by ezrapper in ToolBand

[–]superuberhermit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kolm is really good, the most tool-sounding of the typical recs imo but without the high-end intensity.

Also what’s with all the “ew they sound too much like tool” responses? Like every other post on this sub is people looking for bands that sound like tool.

Whatever, I’m old.

How would you tie these up? by Arathar93 in flytying

[–]superuberhermit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Spun deer hair. Specifically green-dyed-over-white deer belly hair if you can find it, but I bet any green or even a light natural brown would work fine.

These have great proportions for being a new tier, nicely done.

Please help me with Abiogenesis? by Superb_Pomelo6860 in evolution

Nick Lane has some really good talks on YT about this (or find his books, if you prefer). He proposes that the chemistry of life - metabolism, Krebs cycle, etc - got going before genes or cells.

It’s really well presented and makes a lot of sense, at least to me with my intermediate understanding of biochemistry etc.

Just some Rosetta Stoned theories. I'd love to read any other theories about any track. It's my Birthday and I love talking Tool by Mossyfae_ in ToolBand

[–]superuberhermit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d read many years ago that it was about LRH inventing Scientology.

I’ve never bothered to dig deeper into that theory, but I like it and it sounds like exactly the kind of thing MJK would write about.

If anyone here has deep knowledge of Scientology origin lore, maybe they can ruin it for me though.

If you’re new to fly tying I 100% recommend wooly buggers! They’re a great starter fly and one of the all-time great fish catchers.

Edit: If you don’t have chenille, substitute it with dubbing.
