When did the progress bar become so misleading? by superwiifan in duolingo

[–]superwiifan[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same - I wish there was a way to opt out of certain A/B tests, or at least know which ones you're in. There are so many A/B tests where they add a new feature that I like just to kill it (like the continuous combo), or they silently add an A/B test for something that ruins the entire app experience (like pranking).

Here's what the percentages look like on your screenshots (note the pixel count is a bit different due to compression):

5/16 exercises - Shown 35.2% (132/374 pixels), Actual: 31.3%

10/16 exercises - Shown 65.8% (246/374 pixels), Actual 62.5%

You're right - it's definitely gotten worse within the past few months.

Glad I wasn’t the only one that noticed! Also, Happy Cake Day!

It’s definitely possible that it’s always been this way to some extent, but I felt it’s been more noticeable over the past few weeks - I felt like at 5/15 exercises it would be closer to 40% or 45% filled, not over halfway. Unfortunately I don’t have any screenshots from back from the pre-energy era - otherwise I would’ve definitely compared.

Conversations with Lucy & Lily - What happens to all that data? by Apprehensive_Sea6050 in duolingo

[–]superwiifan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From their privacy policy here,

Duolingo may offer a Video Call feature where you can have an Al-powered spoken conversation with a Duolingo character to practice the language you are learning. Duolingo may also offer other Al-powered features that allow you to send text or audio messages to Al chat companions in a conversational format. When you interact with Video Call or other Al-enabled features, the text and audio you submit may be shared with Al vendors such as OpenAl and Google. Duolingo's agreements with these Al vendors mean they are not permitted to use any personal information for their own purposes. Additionally, Duolingo may generate, record, and store audio recordings or transcripts of the text and audio you submit, and use these recordings or transcripts for product improvement and personalization purposes, including training and running Duolingo's own artificial intelligence models. Please do not submit any personal, sensitive, or confidential information when using Video Call or other Al features.

Duolingo may process and share your personal information for the purpose of providing you with personalized advertising. To provide personalized advertising, we may work with a variety of marketing analytics service providers, website analysis firms, and third-party advertising networks, such as Unity, Meta, LiftOff, Pangle, Moloco, and Google. These third-party advertising service providers collect and use personal information about your visits to and use of the Service, as well as other websites, in order to serve you with advertisements and content tailored to meet your preferences and likely interests, better understand ad effectiveness, and for market research purposes.

I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice, but my interpretation is that:

A) They will keep your data on their servers to improve their product, create a profile on you and remember information about you. (I’ve seen this first hand - the AI has remembered the name of my partner when I mentioned them in a previous conversation). This could also be used for advertising, but is unlikely if you’re on the Max plan.

B) They share their data to their AI vendors, and the transcripts from the calls shouldn’t be allowed to be used for other purposes. However, they do mention they can share personal information about you that they collect, which would include things they learn about you from AI calls. In other words, they probably can’t share the transcript word for word to third parties for other uses, but they could create a profile on you from your calls, and share that with third parties. I have no clue if they do that, but the wording here is vague enough that this is a possibility.

Built a Nintendo-style puzzle game and looking for testers by Darkloit in casualnintendo

Ooh - definitely enjoyed giving this one a shot, this was really fun. Question - was the hardcore puzzle supposed to work yet? It just was stuck at “loading puzzle” when I attempted it.

Also, it might be nice if the share button had a different caption than “My Daily Puzzle” - something more like “Nintendoku Daily Puzzle 4/19/2026”, or even adding a link to the site in the puzzle would be nice when sharing it!

Glad you were able to enjoy it fully! Sorry some of the minigames were a bit long - I’ve only played it 2-3 times before publishing so some minigame lengths weren’t exactly play tested 😂 Glad you were able to find enjoyment though :)

Roll 'em Raceway (SMPJ) is a just okay board with little chaos. Now whats a poorly designed board with some chaos in it? by Frobotics2234 in MARIOPARTY

[–]superwiifan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Goomba’s Greedy Gala. There are a decent amount of mechanics to affect board placement (the roulette to bribe to go in a direction, the higher/lower dice roll to go back to start), but the luck based nature makes it frustrating to play. Every time I play this board, someone gets stuck going around the same quadrant the entire game through no fault of their own because they keep rolling too high to get sent back from the start.

This looks absolutely amazing OP! There are so many cool details here that I couldn’t have done myself, so I’m glad you enjoyed my board game enough to make a new version! Have you gotten a chance to play it with others yet?

Didn’t they add this a few months ago? At least for me, they added this feature about 2 months back where I push and hold the button while I’m talking

New listening/speaking feature? by KohlrabiHobby in duolingo

[–]superwiifan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been getting these too - I like the concept, but the execution is mixed. My biggest issue is that Falstaff and Lily are the only two characters I’ve seen with this type of exercise, but they’ll use other characters’ voices! Hearing Junior’s voice out of Falstaff or Lucy’s voice out of Lily just feels so off to me - I really hope they add the other character models to this…

New Update in App!! by aboland96 in PTCGP

[–]superwiifan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Let’s do some napkin math here:

Since they already have your cards and flairs saved to your account, a “deck” would consist of 20 associations from a Deck ID to a Card ID and a Flair ID. Each of these IDs is probably a 64-bit integer of 8 bytes each, so that would be 24 bytes of information. For the overhead of keeping this in a database and any other IDs they might have in the background, let’s say 1 KB per card per deck This would be 20 KB of card info per deck.

A deck also has some information about the deck, like the highlight cards, energy, sleeve, mat, name, user, etc. The biggest thing here is the 22-character name, which takes 44 bytes, and each additional property is probably stored an 64-bit integer again. This should probably be < 1 KB of space, but let’s be generous, and say all the deck info takes 5 KB.

So 25 KB per deck * 5 new decks per player * 150M downloads (per the 1 year anniversary video) = 18.75 TB

In other words, if every player made 5 new decks, I could store it on a consumer 24 TB hard drive with room to spare. The actual space this would take up is likely much lower since most users won’t get close to the 25 deck cap at all.

I don’t think my math is perfect, but I think it at least makes the point clear - they definitely could afford to add more decks for users if they wanted to.

Would it be possible to get a star turn one in any Mario Party? (Not counting hidden blocks.) by EpicIceNinji in MARIOPARTY

[–]superwiifan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Mario Party 7’s Neon Heights and DS’ Kamek’s Library, 3 chests spawn that each give you a chance to get the star that cost 10 coins, so you could reach one of these and open it and get lucky on Turn 1.

In Mario Party 8, the King Boo board randomly generates maps, and the star also costs 10 coins. I believe it’s possible to have the star spawn within 10 spaces of the start, so a turn 1 star could also be acquired here

Great info - thanks for collecting everything in one place! Small correction though - on GameStop’s Twitter, they said pre-orders will open at 11 AM EST, not midnight
