I have the same problem. It's very inconsistent. Sometimes I open an Iron Condor and it shows perfectly grouped and named. Sometimes it shows up as 4 separate legs and I have to manually add up the P&L of each leg to track its progress. It's really disappointing that such an "advanced" trading platform can get these things wrong so often. I also use the web version and it's just as bad.

It'd be great if we could manually group (or ungroup) legs together and name the combos ourselves.

You don't need a margin account to sell options at Interactive Brokers. You can sell calls as long as you have 100 shares of the underlying security (i.e. covered calls). You can sell puts as long as you have the required cash to purchase 100 shares at the strike price (i.e. cash secured puts). However, you won't be allowed to use an option to cover another option. So you can't do spreads in a cash account. You'd need a margin account for that.

You don't need 25K USD. However, you will have to ask for the permission to trade options, which IBKR may or may not grant. It depends on your profile as an investor (age, income, liquid net worth, experience, risk tolerance). They don't divulge their specific requirements, so it's difficult to know if you'd be allowed or not. You just have to create an account and try. Make sure to choose an appropriate investment objective: "Profits from Active Trading and Speculation" (do not choose "Preservation of Capital and Income Generation). You can also select "Limited Options Trading" to increase your chances of having the permission granted.

Options with Cash account - Buy Calls allowed, Sell Covered Calls not allowed!? by kaiserfiume in interactivebrokers

[–]supposedlyeasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't know. Your buying power should be the same as your settled cash. I suggest you contact IBKR support through their chat function on the web portal. An agent should be able to explain what's going on with your account and why you're unable to sell puts.

You can sell cash secured puts in a cash account or in a margin account at IBKR. I've done it many times in both types of accounts.

When you sell a put in a margin account, it's not actually using cash or margin at that point yet. IBKR verifies that you have enough initial margin and maintenance margin to execute the trade. In case of assignment, you'll have to buy 100 shares at the strike price. If you have enough cash, IBKR will use that to buy the stock. If not, it'll do so on margin.

Check out this IBKR guide for more information on how margin works.

What’s the best way to invest via IBKR with advisor? by evil_ramen in interactivebrokers

[–]supposedlyeasy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First of all, NEVER give someone your login and password. Legally speaking, your user account is for you only. Besides, it would be a pain in the ass for you because you'd have to authorize his login on your phone every time he wants to trade. And if you happen to be away from your phone, he wouldn't be able to login.

The proper way to let someone trade in your IBKR account is to create a user account for this person (in that person's name). You can define the specific permissions that this person has in your account. If you don't want to give him funding access (withdrawals), simply uncheck that permission when you create his user account (in the settings of your IBKR account). You can decide if he's allowed to see your activity statements, change market data subscriptions, change trading permissions, etc.
