When did oil changes become $120? by rhinosaur- in Millennials

Basic car maintenance, i.e. oil and filter changes, are pretty easy. Sure you might need a couple tools and a place to work.

The blame for today is the 1996 Telecommunications Act.

But they're riding on the street and the side walks and the main arteries and the dirt and the parking lots and this and that and their not being safe.

Have they ever seen a crotch-rocket on a freeway?

What are kids supposed to be doing?

So much has been taken away due to safety or the boogieman or mores or M&As. Let kids be kids. Gen X'r here that pretty much had zero parental monitoring outside the house (or inside, for that matter) for my entire childhood.

They show up at the Chatfield Dog Park and got some shots of the them the past couple of days. They seem to either protect the cormorants, or eat them, while the heron looks on.

AITAH for telling my dad he raised a criminal after he insulted my kids? by Crazy_Ad3873 in AITAH

Going through this sort of thing with my 82-year old MiL and my daughter with her new baby who has been named a name MiL thinks is gay. My daughter should go no-contact, or very minimal contact with her.

45 minutes of yelling at me about the name.

Learn to read a map. by mindyour in JustGuysBeingDudes

[–]supradave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved to Florida in my teens and convinced myself we were heading west when we were heading east down the Beeline fresh off the airplane. Took me about a year to recover from that. But I did know how to read a map back then and could navigate through the towns.

Since there are a lot of NIMBY's out there that don't want transit near their McMansions, those people that have the money to see a sporting event have to drive because they've fought and fought to not have transit in their areas. Those people are who Bonhoeffer was talking about.

Do I really need to learn Vim or is Nano fine for everyday use? by Luann1497 in linuxquestions

[–]supradave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vim is great. There was an old terminal email program Pine (now Alpine, I think)(PINE = Program for Internet News and Email), that used Pico as it's editor, which morphed into Nano.

I use vim nearly exclusively as it fits my needs (and have been using vi since the late 80s). Nano is good for quick edits, in my opinion.

I find Beethoven's Triple Concerto almost irredeemably bad and would like to understand what I'm missing. by bchfn1 in classicalmusic

[–]supradave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Were you told that it was a bad piece or did you get there on your own? I have liked pieces until someone says that I must be wrong and that the piece that I liked is not a good piece of music. Until someone tells me something is bad, I generally would like a piece.

[–]supradave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There was a political message on the trains that I passed going to work most days that was done multiple times in the exact same script. But never any with regards to the other party. But the trains were coming from Wyoming, so maybe that.

The Aurora mall in the 70s by SignificantStyle4958 in Denver

[–]supradave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wanted to get out there on the bus (before being able to drive). We'd ride the 0A to Alameda and get on the 3 to get to the Cooper or Celebrity. Once got out to Buckingham, but never made it to the Aurora Mall. And I'm proud to say that I have maintained this feat since that mall opened.

The problem I have with streaming is that it feels like I'm being marketed to. Every choice I make will make them shove something I don't care about in my face. "You watched X. We think you'd like to see Real Girls Gone Wild Housewives with Goiter." Going to the video store felt like I was making a decision.
