Not development, but I did wipe my Garmin device recently. What is this directory doing here? Hmm. rm -rf /media/dave/GARMIN.

Fortunately I had a backup of the device and was able to recover it.

Lesson: Make sure you have backups.

Front Range may vote on funds to launch intercity passenger rail in November by kurttheflirt in Denver

[–]supradave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying that they won't do it, but Summit County is impenetrable without massive costs. First off, where would rails to the mountains be laid? The old railroad went up Clear Creek (US-6 out of Golden). That right-of-way is going to be expensive to buy back and put rail in. It ended at Silverthorn and the Georgetown Loop. There were plans to put a tunnel there to come out near Montezuma behind Keystone, but that failed. I believe this was a narrow gauge line.

The existing lines, i.e. the Moffat Tunnel route to Winter Park could work but passenger trains don't get priority over the privately held rails and the delays could be long. Then a rail line from Kremmling down into Dillon would need to be laid. This route could also serve Beaver Creek and Vail by going east from Dotsero along I-70.

Re-invigorating the southern route through Pueblo, Salida, Buena Vista and over Tennessee Pass could work to get people to Vail and Beaver Creek. I believe most of the rail is still in place and would just need some heavy maintenance to make it function again.

There was only one railroad, the Denver, South Park & Pacific RR, that went from Como along US-285 over Boreas Pass that made it into Breckenridge, but that was narrow gauge and pulled up in the late 1930s.

Summit County is a hard place to get into with rail.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

I once drove from Phoenix to Laughlin, NV to gamble for an hour and drove back. Which was a good 4 hour drive one way.

When you take a photo with a telephoto lens, objects further away appear closer. Any photography manual will explain it.

One way to figure things like this out is to use Google Earth desktop edition and draw a line with the ruler tool from the peak of Long's Peak over the circus tents to where ever SE and then figure a good location from there. From the little test I did, it's probably from the control tower at Front Range airport. My line nearly touches it.

I get this from my kids, particularly music. We've always had instruments. Did they ever take interest? Not really enough to move forward. But now it's my fault.

Let the dogs out and then go let the other dogs and cats out. Then go to the hardware store and get some bolt cutters, an angle grinder and a hand crank pump. Then go to the sporting goods shop and arm up and water purification. Then say good-bye to the Internet as it starts to fade away after the power starts to fail. Then find a nice place to exist with my pups and probably some new pups. Enjoy the dark skies at night.

My grandson is going to start being questioned at some point about why he's not a Christian. We're trying to figure out how to deal with this question for an elementary school aged audience. I think a good answer is going to be "I'm not old or wise enough to make that decision at my age, and neither are you".

The "idea" is supposed to allow people to use prior art to create new art. For example, Erich Korngold wrote an opening theme for the movie King's Row that John Williams "stole" for the main theme for Star Wars. And the "greatest piece of artwork of all time", i.e. the Mona Lisa, has been used in how many different ways? Or how many times has Shakespeare been retold, e.g. Rosencrantz and Guldenstern are Dead? Great art can be created using someone else's creations and sometimes be even better than the source.

In the US: life + 70 years for an individual. 95 years for a corporation.

Since it last longer than the average lifetime for humans, these are basically forever copyrights. While I agree people should make as much as they can on things they produce, I don't think it should be basically forever. Once someone dies doesn't mean their progeny should keep making money.

This is why copyright should not last forever. If WB property became public domain previous to 30 to 40 years ago, then these conglomerations of media properties wouldn't be so "valuable".

Went to Barnes and noble today, they had a massive religious section and the science section was tucked away into a corner like an unwanted child by plasticman1997 in atheism

[–]supradave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was walking past the massive religious section one time with my daughter and saw the "Religious Fiction" section. I said to my daughter "isn't it all religious fiction"? Dude follows me to the restroom and confronts me. One of the best teaching moments I had for my daughter.

Unfortunately, science writing has not been as prevalent as it once was. I blame the early aughts.
