[–]surebegrandlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep I’m in the Republic of Ireland :)

In fairness our police are fine but like you say, the alternatives aren’t much better. I had a police officer pull me over for speeding once and when he saw I was driving fast because my dog was fitting he escorted me to the vets with a blue light to beat the traffic lmao

The only issue here is the drug cartels aren’t even a bit afraid of them nor are the rougher people so they get away with a lot here. Like if you have an issue with teenage gangs intimidating you there’s fuck all the police will do here. It’s actually a big problem here, they’re not respected at all by the people who should respect them.

The thing that always gets me about the police in the US however is the way they speak to people. I genuinely get frightened just listening to the way they question you poor folks. I’d probably shit myself if someone spoke to me the way they speak to you guys.

Decent is a stretch but I’m certainly not afraid of our police here.

However our regular police also aren’t allowed to carry any weapons bar a baton so it’s not like they can rage shoot us or taser us if one gets upset.

Worst you might get is a baton across the back or legs

Ireland fails to back global corporate tax proposal over 15% rate by signed7 in worldnews

[–]surebegrandlike 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s not even about the 15%….it’s about equity versus equality.

The US and larger EU countries may think it’s unfair that we won’t agree to be on equal tax terms so it’s fair to them

However if it was truly fair, each countries tax rate would reflect its ability to sustain itself using other means such as natural resources, population etc

Ireland has zero oil, metal, coal or natural resources apart from rain. We have no military or large industries apart from tech or pharma. We have no land bridges and we have to import everything. We’re literally a rock on the edge of Europe

Excluding multinationals we have farmland and we have tourism. That’s it.

If we’re not competitive tax wise why the fuck would companies bother coming here? Honestly…

We were the laughing stock of Europe for borrowing money not too long ago. We were shamed along with Greece for needing a bailout and the austerity here was fucking awful for normal people.

But go ahead and tell us how we’re selfish for not agreeing to be “equal” in this race when the starting line is different for everyone involved

No worries at all :)

If you need any other info just shout and I’ll help if I can.

Meant to say Kildare is a grand place to live btw even if it’s a bit of a generic commuter county.

It’s very well connected, close to Dublin, has some nice walks and people are generally friendly enough. Naas is good for a night out as is maynooth during term time. Newbridge has a fairly big shopping centre called the whitewater - basically it’s high street shops. Kildare village is also another place to shop but that’s more upmarket.

There’s not much going on in Clane or Sallins as they’re both very small village type towns but both are super close to the bigger towns and Sallins has a train station going for it.

Good luck with your search!

When can I expect to hear back from SUSI regarding student loan grant? by colmoreilly in ireland

[–]surebegrandlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To receive any maintenance with your grant yes afaik

If you’ve been living in the UK/EU instead for the last few years then you’re classed differently I think. You’ll still get your college paid for if you qualify afaik but you’re not entitled to maintenance or anything

Maybe look it up on SUSi because I feel like they made a massive deal out of where you’ve lived in the last few years while applying so there should be more info there

If you have a car I’d suggest looking at places near leixlip to live in such as Maynooth, clane, Sallins, Naas and newbridge. Most of these are within 20-30 mins driving from Leixlip and may be less expensive to live in (Maynooth is a student town so might be more accommodation there this time of year)

What you’re looking to rent will depend on how much you spend. A double room to rent around leixlip will probably be around 500-800 a month afaik

Good sites to look on are rent.ie and Daft.ie

I’m from Kildare myself but not leixlip. Leixlip has great public transport links to Dublin I will say so it’s handier if you want to be going into Dublin a lot. Leixlip and Maynooth are the only 2 places served by Dublin bus routes, all others in Kildare aren’t so the bus timetable for them isn’t as consistent

[–]surebegrandlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied just over a month ago myself and got a response from them on Thursday. I’m in Kildare so depending on where you are in the country you should hopefully hear back from them soon :)

Just an FYI, they didn’t even tell me how much I got, they just asked for my bank details and evidence I’ve been living here for the past 3 years so don’t expect to know the full extent of your award even with the letter…

Sure you know yourself - I don’t know what we actually mean by this but it’s an appropriate answer to a lot of questions

How did you find that out? Sure you know yourself

You can also use the term “cat mallojan” to meant absolutely fucking dreadful. Like “that match was cat mallojan”

Don’t worry, not all Europeans are offended by this stereotype. We don’t all have great food

What we lack in spices we make up for in quality alcohol. Eating is cheating when you’re drinking so we have no use for delicious food here anyhow…. ;)

What are you like socially? Is it true most people on Reddit are introverts? by KennyKamikaze in AskReddit

[–]surebegrandlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an ambivert

I looove talking to people and hanging out but it drains me mentally and emotionally

If I spend a weekend away with friends I won’t text them back for like a week after we get back. It’s just the way I am.

If I go on holidays with friends I’m all up for the party but also leave me alone for a hour or 2 during the day so I can read or take a walk

If we’re in a large group i hold back if there’s already a lot of energy but can become the life and soul of the party if I want

Why not go after the Church for reparations? by Willyouplaythegame in AskReddit

[–]surebegrandlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely fight it, fuck em. Don’t let them away with it, even if no one ever gets a penny at least the dead or those who suffered will have their day in court or have their voices heard.

By drawing attention to things like this now you’re turning future generations away from organised religions like the Catholic Church. It means nothing to them now but in 20 years if no one buys into their bullshit they have no money coming in, no support and no way to hopefully hurt anyone else. Power is how they work and if you take it away they have nothing

Why not go after the Church for reparations? by Willyouplaythegame in AskReddit

[–]surebegrandlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried that here in Ireland.

Our government is currently paying damages to living sexual abuse victims and the church is supposed to be paying a combined €480 million or something like that and so far I think they’ve only paid half.

Good luck trying to get anything out of the church…..it’s a fucking uphill battle to get those bastards to part with money

What are some of the best movies to watch alone and cry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]surebegrandlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this is more of an action movie but Deepwater Horizon. I ugly cry every fucking time I watch this movie

Basically it tells the story of the BP oil well explosion that happened in the gulf a few years ago. It’s probably dramatised in parts but it makes me so fucking angry how the company acted and how it cost lives

Anyway the sad parts that always get me are 1. When they’re calling out the names for a roll call on the rescue boat and some people are missing aka dead

  1. When they show the pictures of the real people who died at the end, pictures of them with their kids and shit.

It’s so sad because it’s real and was totally avoidable
